SF, Barcelona Sign Sister-City Pact

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) ― With the stroke of a pen Monday, San Francisco entered into a long-term partnership with Barcelona when Mayor Gavin Newsom and Barcelona Mayor Jordi Hereu mutually affirm a sister-city agreement.

San Francisco has more than a dozen sister cities, including Assisi, Italy; Manila, Philippines; Shanghai, China; and Sydney, Australia. The city's first sororal agreement dates back to 1957, when San Francisco formed an alliance with Osaka, Japan.

Earlier this year, Newsom signed a sister-city agreement with Amman, Jordan.

The sister cities program, administered by the diplomacy nonprofit Sister Cities International, is designed to strengthen partnerships between U.S. communities and those abroad.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower championed the citizen diplomacy initiative in 1956. Within a decade, the program became so popular that Sister Cities International was created to promote the inter-municipal relationships.
