Southend United have bolstered their defensive options by agreeing one-year deals with Mark Phillips and Luke Prosser.

The centre-halves will link up with the Shrimpers subject to being registered with the Football League after impressing manager Paul Sturrock in pre-season.

Phillips was released by Brentford at the end of last season following two years at Griffin Park, having previously spent seven years with Millwall.

Prosser was let go by Port Vale towards the end of the last campaign and had a brief stint at Kidderminster Harriers before linking up with Southend.

Sturrock has been busy overhauling his squad since taking charge at Roots Hall and is preparing for Southend's opening League Two fixture against Stockport County next Saturday.
