Dodgers reel in Penny, Choi

On the eve of the trading deadline, general manager Paul DePodesta on Friday shook his club to its foundation with one blockbuster trade, and he might have more in the pipeline.

In the most dramatic deadline remaking of a first-place team in memory and the most stunning Dodger deal since Mike Piazza was discarded, the Dodgers sent All-Star catcher Paul Lo Duca, quality setup man Guillermo Mota and outfielder Juan Encarnacion to the Florida Marlins for right-handed starting pitcher Brad Penny, first baseman Hee-Seop Choi and Double-A pitcher Bill Murphy.

"The team knows we're trying to make them better and push them over the top," said DePodesta. "The worst thing we could have done was nothing with a first-place team. Are there risks? No question. I felt the risks associated were acceptable and what we needed to do to get there. When you talk of standing pat, you only get in this position so many times. We don't want to be done. We want to do something more."

The Dodgers also have a deal to re-acquire Colorado catcher Charles Johnson to replace Lo Duca behind the plate, but Johnson first must waive a no-trade clause. Johnson was obtained by the Dodgers in 1998 in the Mike Piazza trade. The Dodgers would send a prospect to Colorado, which would pick up as much as $5 million of Johnson's $9 million salary next year.
