Hungary may return with new broadcaster

Hungarian broadcaster DunaTV, which broadcast the Eurovision Song Contest this year, might submit an entry for Hungary in a future edition of the competition. Previously, broadcaster MTV had pulled out of the competition for financial reason.

DunaTV is still no full member of the EBU, which would be obligatory if they wanted to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest, but they are reported to be in negotiations with the European Broadcasting Union. It has also been stated that the broadcaster would most likely organise a national final to select singer and song. In 2010, they aired both semi finals and the final of the contest.

Hungary took part in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time in 1994, achieving a fourth place, which ist still the country's best result. The only other time that Hungary reached the top ten was in 2007. In 1993 and 1996, the country did not make it past the qualification round, in 1999 it was relegated and between 2000 and 2004 as well as in 2006 and 2009, no entries were submitted.

@Nenad i know that Serbians loves Cyprus :) But why you speak about Serbian points , i didnt mencion anything about Serbian points :P And btw its time Serbia and the rest ex yugo countries and also ex soviet countries to vote for good songs and not for neighboors :P Of course Cyprus and Greece, Turkey and Azerbaijan, Nordic block, baltic block and some others must stop to exchange always high points. And i thing that was one reason who EBU make 50/50 voting , but it seems to me that 50/50 voting dont work for 70% of ESC countries. Jurys must take theyr responsibilitys and forget neighboors, friend nations, same religions etc and vote for good songs ! :)

@ Lina,

Serbia loves Cyprus, but we have so many neighbours and then 2-3 pts to Cyprus only. After all, we vote Greece very much.

Personal i thing that Germany will help financial some countries ( back of the scenes ) to return or not withdraw beacuse they want to have a succesfull ESC host, also Germany will push EBU to accept before December Liechtenstein application. I thing 43 or 44 countries will participate in Germany . Personal i thing that exept last year 39 countries this countries will return or make a debut: Montenegro, Andorra, Hungary, Austria ( already return ) and Liechtenstein also maybe San Marino return. So 39 + 5 = 44 countries :) And if San Marino return the countries will be 45 :)

Hello Everybody!
I'm Bence from Hungary. I hope my country will return to the Eurovision. Our National TV, MTV has hard financial problems. Now, the new goverment make lot of reform, in medien too.
I think, Hungary can only with second national Tv, DunaTV return. I hope, in 2011 Hungary will win the contest and in 2010 Budapest will be the host. I think, we hungarian people are very sweet. We have a lot of singer, but we haven't good songwriter.
Europe, Hungary will return and vote for Hungary in 2011! Thank you!

@ Zohar

Totally agree. EBU was by far more inflexible in the past, and that carried bad consequences.
Nowadays, EBU is the first in breaking their own rules, as we have just seen in the case of JESC 2010, where 2-3 countries have been accepted many time after the official deadline expired.
If Hungary (Duna TV) and Liechtenstein (1FLTV) really want to take part in ESC 2011, I'm sure they'll be able no matter the official deadlines.

Yes, you are welcome back, Hungary! ;) Loved their entries in 1994, 2005 and 2007 :) 1995, 1998 and 2009 should not be mentioned, though :S

@S:t Calderón de Vega
possibly it would've won. even it would fit perfectly to the whishes of the esc's americanisation by well beloved "juries". hungary 2007 was overrated enough. especially in the semi-final.

I pity NOX for "only" coming 12th because the song had potential to peak higher. however, the vocal performances were quite poor in the final even. :(
last year, I'd 've loved to magányos csónak in moscow. such a lovely and authentic song. it remind me a bit of hungary's debut with frederike. a very nice song either.

@ mario...oh thats good news

i mean svante is the one who wants "a full house" so i can't seem him not being flexible with those who want to join but are in diofficult situations

i do hope Hungary will be back :D

Small correction :

Hungaria was initially relegated for the 1999 contest, however, after Latvia withdrew from their debut (just two days before the deadline of Nov98), Hungaria was the first country to be offered the empty slot, however, due to financial mis-order they couldn't give an immediate answer, and therefore Portugal was given the last slot for 1999.

Back then, during the relegation years, countries/broadcasters had to commit to a final answer, if they are participaring or not, as there was a limit on number of countries that could compete. Today, the EBU is far more flexible for negotations even past the deadline.

so I'm going to speak to my old friend Zoltán ("Zoli" ;)at Duna TV, see what they can do!

Mario Mir [44111]

@ kevin

Duna TV is an associate member of EBU. To become an active member is not necessary to submit an application in the same way of 1FLTV or ONT, because those broadcasters are not members of any kind.
Duna TV only needs to reach an agreement with EBU to "upgrade" its status to active member. Not especific terms are established, but however it can't be officialized until December; but if the agreement exists, Duna TV could submit its application for EBU in November, although they won't be officially an active member at that time. Maybe something similar could apply for 1FLTV, but this case is more difficult because the broadcaster is not member of any kind, and bureaucracy is bureaucracy.

Please return, Hungary! We miss you!

"Unsubstantial blues" lost for some reason many televoters after the semi-final. It would have scored on 3rd place in the final, instead of 9th, if we had used 50/50 televoting/jury back then. So what if we would have had 100% juries...?

I hope Hungary will return to ESC..I miss Budapest a lot after living there in the early 90s, and I remember Duna TV just starting then, as an interesting, fresh alternative to boring Magyartelevisió, watching the European Swimming Championships earlier reminded me of my lovely (but sometimes difficult!) time there, especially going to beautiful "Margit sziget" (Margaret island) where the swimming is taking place, of course I'd recommend anyone here who has never visited Budapest to go there! a real European treasure, as indeed is Hungary..hajrá Magyarország! és a magyarok!

Bálint,

thanks!
Yaaay, "Magányos Csónak" is so good! It would be great to see it on eurovision stage.

Hungary was best in 1994, 2005 and 2007 (my personal winner).

Btw. I've got a question, guys. What were tittles of two hungarian songs, which were disqualified in 2009 ?
