It is not entirely surprising when someone dies, at the age of 90, unless, like Frank Kermode, he was still at the height of his powers.
A delicious question was asked in these pages, this last week, and answered by Margaret Somerville, the McGill ethicist. It was, "What is the most dangerous idea in the world today?" Her answer -- that humans deserve no more respect than other animals -- is a good one.
We are sitting in a neighbour's garden eyeing a neighbour's cat who is eyeing a nearby squirrel. Will he pounce or let it go? At that moment, fortuitously for the prey, a cabbage white butterfly flutters by oblivious to the drama below. The feline is distracted, as are the spectators. The squirrel hops offstage.
