Description

Open level with attributes

This icon is displayed at the start of the opened level of the selected legislation and can be used to access the attributes applicable to the legislation for that level (e.g. whole Act, Part, Schedule, section, etc.).

The attributes appear at the bottom of the page and clicking on this icon jumps directly to this point so there is no need to scroll down.

Closed level - click to open

If you are viewing legislation at a level that contains lower level elements (e.g. a Part containing Chapters and sections), each distinct lower level element will be shown with a grey version of the 'attributes' icon (but without the open book) alongside it in the left-hand margin. Clicking on this icon will open the legislation at that lower level.

Concurrent version(s)

If the legislation you are viewing contains a provision which has one or more concurrent versions (i.e., different versions applying to different geographical extents), that provision will be displayed with a yellow diamond containing the letter 'C', in the left-hand margin.

Prospective

If the provision you are viewing has a version which is 'prospective' (i.e., not yet in force), a blue pentagon containing the letter 'P' will appear in the attributes table in the 'version number' column to indicate the entry for that version.

The 'P' icon will also appear against the text of any prospective version in the left-hand margin.

Link to amended legislation

If you are viewing legislation that amends or otherwise affects another item of legislation, a purple arrow may appear in the text at the point where the amendment arises.

Click the arrow to jump to the affected legislation. (These links will usually only be found in amending legislation enacted in 2002 or later.)

The example below illustrates three of these icons.

The 'Closed level - click to open' icon indicates that the legislation has been opened at a higher level. In this case, the Act has been opened at the Schedule level, and this is a paragraph within that Schedule. You would need to click on this icon to ‘open’ paragraph 3 and view its attributes.

The 'Prospective' icon indicates that this version of paragraph 3 has not yet been brought into effect (that is, it is ‘prospective’). If, as in this case, the prospective version is the only version, the icon also serves to indicate that the provision itself has not yet been brought into force.

The 'Link to amended legislation' icon indicates the location of an effect upon another piece of legislation. In this instance, some words are inserted into Part 1 of Schedule 1 to the Juries Act 1974. Clicking on the link would take you to the affected provision in that Act.
