How long is a cheque valid for?

Definition

If the cheque is not presented to a bank by the person entitled to payment on the cheque within 15 months from the date the cheque was issued, then the cheque becomes "stale" and is no longer capable of being drawn upon.

A cheque may also lose its validity if information arises to suggest that it has not been properly executed, for example, if the signature on the cheque is forged. In these cases a cheque may be "stopped" and will no longer be valid as a form of payment.
