Thirty Years of Working With Seel
LISCO Ranked 3rd among the largest Arab Steel Producing and Exporting Companies
Al Tuwairqi Group CompaniesLast Update:     20/03/2005 15:05:18
ArabSteel -  The Libyan Iron and Steel Company achieved a new production of 918 thousand tons of long and flat products in 2004 compared to 835 thousand tons in 2003, i.e., up by 18% mainly concentrated in producing reinforcing steel which amounted to 460 thousand tons in 2004 compared to 412 thousand tons in 2003, i.e., up by about 40 thousand tons / year. Production of the hot-rolled coils increased to reach 429 thousand tons in 2004 compared to 391 thousand tons in 2003.
The Company’s production of hot-briquetted iron rose from 412 thousand tons in 2003 up to 606 thousand tons in 2004.
This increase in production was reflected mainly in the development of the volume of sales in the domestic market. The volume of sales of reinforcing steel in the domestic market amounted to 426 thousand tons in 2004 compared to 360 thousand tons in 2003.
This increased demand for the reinforcing steel in the domestic market resulted in the decline of the exported quantities of this material from 72 thousand tons in 2003 down to 20 thousand tons in 2004 under the pressure of the increased demand in the domestic market.
The company’s volume of exports amounted to 881 thousand tons of various products in 2004 , including the hot-briquetted iron (HBI) which constituted 54% of the total exports.
The volume of exports of this product also rose from 339 thousand tons in 2003 up to 477 thousand tons in 2004. Exports of the flat products were about 59% of the total finished products exported in 2004.
Accordingly, the Libyan Iron and Steel Company ranked third among the largest iron and steel products producing and exporting companies at the Arab level in 2004.
In 2004 the company signed a contract to develop the steel mill no.1 aiming at boosting the production capacity of this mill from 674 thousand tons per year to 1.100 thousand tons of liquid steel to meet the requirements of the long rolling mills. This project is considered the first stage to take the production capacity of both steel mills no.1 and no.2 up to 2 million tons of liquid steel per year.
According to Dr. Mohammed Abu Ojeilah Al Mabrouk, in a speech by him on the fifteenth anniversary of opening the company’s mill, the results of 2004 were better than the years before. This was the result of the rise of the prices of the steel products in the world markets and to the absence of any problems in marketing of the company’s products either locally or abroad.
