and US Navy Veteran

Baseball legend Yogi Berra does not need much of an introduction. He holds numerous World Series records, including most games by a catcher (63), hits (71), and times on a winning team (10), first in at bats, first in doubles, second in RBIs, third in home runs and BOBs. Yogi also hit the first pinch hit home run in World Series history in 1947. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. Berra was 18 when he joined the Navy in World War II. He participated in the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach and also served in North Africa and Italy.

and US Navy Veteran

Leonard A. Lauder is Chairman Emeritus of The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., one of the world’s leading manufacturers and marketers of quality skin care, makeup, fragrance and hair care products, with annual sales of nearly $8 billion. Its products are sold in more than 140 countries and territories under 28 well-recognized brand names. The Company is named for Lauder’s mother, who founded the company. Lauder served as President of the Company from 1972-1995 and as CEO from 1982-1999. He added the title of Chairman in 1995. Under his leadership, the Company launched many brands, including Aramis, Clinique, Prescriptives and Origins. Beginning in the mid-1990s, the Company also began expanding through acquisitions, including MAC, Bobbi Brown and Aveda. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, Lauder also studied at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy’s Supply Corps.

Frederick W. Smith is the chairman, president and chief executive officer of FedEx Corporation, a $38 billion global transportation, business services and logistics company. He founded the company in 1971. Smith is responsible for providing strategic direction for all FedEx Corporation operating companies, including FedEx Services, FedEx Express, FedEx Ground and FedEx Freight. FedEx serves more than 220 countries and territories with operations that include 577 aircraft and more than 80,000 vehicles. More than 290,000 team members worldwide handle more than 8 million shipments each business day. He is a graduate of Yale University and he served as an officer in the Marine Corps 1966-1970. 

The Lone Sailor Award

The Lone Sailor Award is given to Sea Service veterans who have excelled with distinction in their respective civilian careers while exemplifying the Navy core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. In receiving the Lone Sailor Award, Berra, Lauder and Smith join an impressive list of men and women who have distinguished themselves by drawing upon their military experience to become successful.
