Burdekin River Bridge: maintenance and rehabilitation project

Overview:

The objective of the 2009 to 2014 Burdekin Bridge rehabilitation and maintenance project is to preserve the integrity of the bridge and to prepare and complete a total repaint of the bridge.

Location:

The Burdekin River Bridge is located on the Bruce Highway between the townships of Home Hill and Ayr and is an important link in the national network.  It is also the only road and rail link between North and South Queensland. The alternate route to Townsville via Mount Coolon-Belyando-Charters Towers is 355 km longer.

The Burdekin River Bridge provides a strategic, high flood immunity link between north and south Queensland. It provides for both road and rail traffic and comprises ten (10) main spans (each 250 feet) and twenty-two approach spans with a total length of approximately 3620 feet (1103 metres).

Regions:
Northern Region

Project info

2010 will see the installation of a further 4 link beams, with patch painting and spot welding continuing on a daily basis.  It will also see the northern and southern approaches being re-asphalted with new line-marking to be completed in these sections.

Other works that will be completed in 2010 will include sandblasting of rusted areas and some structural repairs and replacements.

Full bridge closures will be programmed throughout the year to allow for larger more complex works to be completed.  Closures will be scheduled where possible for Sunday nights between 9:00 pm and 4:00 am.

Some works such as the asphalting of the approaches to the bridge will require longer closures and may need to occur on alternative days, notification of upcoming closures will be provided via newspaper and radio adverts as well as via flyers and electronic message boards.

Upcoming works

Day to day works will involve patch painting and spot welding.  These works will require the use of:

  • traffic controllers
  • single lane closures
  • short term (15 mins) full closures.

Some short term closures will be used whilst machinery and equipment are moved to different positions on the bridge.

Works will occur Monday to Friday from 6 am to 6 pm.

Motorists should expect delays and allow extra travel time when crossing the Burdekin Bridge during work hours.  Signage will be in place to advise of the changed traffic conditions.

Community Updates

Adverts were recently placed in the local papers encouraging the community to sign up for Burdekin River Bridge project updates and notifications.

If you missed the adverts you can still sign up for the updates - see below for details.

Community updates will be mailed out on a quarterly basis and will provide an overview of the upcoming programmed works and the project’s progress to date.

Email and fax notifications will be sent out whenever there are planned works that may cause traffic disruptions.

Notifications will also be sent out prior to any scheduled full bridge closures.
