Rowing is a physically demanding endurance sport that requires excellent technique, physical fitness, focus, mental strength, dedication and self-discipline . At the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) athletes not only enjoy world-class training and coaching, but have opportunities for personal growth through the Athlete Career and Education program.

National Rowing Centre of Excellence

The National Rowing Centre of Excellence (NRCE) is a newly formed joint venture between Rowing Australia (RA) and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). It will incorporate the entirety of RA’s High Performance Program and the AIS Residential Scholarship and National Camps Programs.

The primary objective of the NRCE is to achieve sustainable medal winning performances by Australia at Olympic and Paralympic Games consistent with the Rowing Australia High Performance Plan as determined by the RA Board. The NRCE will be managed by a Joint Management Committee (JMC) of RA and AIS personnel and will be located at the AIS boat sheds.

National Objectives

To achieve the vision, the objectives of NRCE for the years 2009–2012 are to:

  • Win three Gold medals at the 2012 London Olympic Games
  • Win one gold medal at the 2012 London Paralympic Games
  • Increase the number of athletes with elite medal winning performance characteristics through all levels of the HP program
  • Increase the number of coaches in the HP program capable of coaching Olympic Gold medal performances
  • Maximise the effective integration and utilization of all available HP resources across Australia through NRCE leadership.

Management Structure

To achieve its objectives, the NRCE has developed comprehensive strategies in:

  • National leadership
  • Performance management for Athletes & Coaches
  • Team Selection
  • Resource management (including AIS/SAS/SAS Programs)
  • Sports Science and Sports Medicine
  • International Competition and
  • Effective communications

The NRCE is led by the National High Performance Director. Key staff include the National Head Coaches (Men and Women), the Elite Development Manger and Operations Manager.

Core Business Units and Partners

The Core Business Units relate to the major functions of the NRCE, and all relate to the daily operations of High Performance rowing in Australia.

Key partners are:

  • The Australian Sports Commission – RA's major sponsor
  • The Australian Institute of Sport – in its role as part of the NRCE
  • The State Institutes and Academies of Sport – who along with the State Associations and Clubs, implement the National Plan in the States
