FAQ: Membership

How are members selected?

Participation is by invitation only, limited to a select and diverse group of heads of state, CEOs, media voices, philanthropists and foundation heads, religious leaders, original thinkers, and those who run highly effective non-profit organizations. When choosing individuals for membership, CGI attempts to match people who have the necessary resources with those who have the most innovative ideas.

What’s included in membership?

  • Invitation to "members only" events such as the Annual Meeting in New York City
  • Access to password-protected CGI members-only web resources
  • Access to CGI's secure on-line member directory
  • Information and research
  • CGI Commitment Support
    - Assistance with identifying and developing problem-solving projects in areas of interest.
    - Recommendations for partnership opportunities, customized to meet strategic objectives.
    - Facilitation, where practical, for knowledge sharing and partnerships among members.

How do I become a member?

If you have not received an invitation and would like to be considered, please email your contact information and a short bio to Please note that to ensure the highest quality and most productive working environment for CGI, membership is designed for those at the Chairman, President, or CEO level. The fee for membership through CGI’s Annual Meeting in New York is $20,000 per calendar year.

Are membership fees tax-deductible?

Yes. Because the Clinton Global Initiative is a non-partisan project of the William J. Clinton Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, all dues are considered to be tax-deductible contributions.

For federal income tax purposes, CGI Members who attend the Annual Meeting may deduct $19,000, which is your $20,000 membership fee less $1,000 for its fair value.

When would my membership commence?

After accepting our invitation to become a member of CGI, membership begins when you return a completed registration form and submit your membership fee. Membership operates on a calendar year basis and ends on December 31, 2009 regardless of when your membership began. We regret that we cannot pro-rate or discount membership fees for those who join mid-year.

I cannot afford the membership fee. Are there any complimentary invitations?

Each year, we extend a limited number of complimentary invitations to our Annual Meeting and to CGI’s regional meetings. The primary goal is to include a diverse group of non-governmental organizations that will support our mission to generate action. Consideration is given to those at senior levels whose contribution can help to solve one of the problems discussed during the meeting.

In order for the head of your organization to be considered for a complimentary invitation, please email Note that only one person per organization will be extended a complimentary invitation.

I am a member, but I cannot attend the meeting. Can I send a substitute in my place?

We regret that you cannot send another person in your place. CGI carefully considers and selects each of our members to create a membership composition that best fits our program for each year. We are sorry that you will not be able to join us this year, but we hope that you have taken advantage of the other benefits of membership.
