Ships Ahoy - Darksiders

THQ announces that the Windows edition of Darksiders is now available worldwide, offering PC users the chance to play this action/adventure game already out on consoles. Here's word: "Developed by THQ’s in-house studio, Vigil Games™, the Windows PC version of the game has been re-engineered from the ground up to deliver the same great action as the console games, while taking advantage of keyboard and mouse controls." Says THQ's Travis Plane: "It is important that the PC audience get to experience the same great product as the console audience so we pulled out all the stops to optimize this version. If you didn’t previously buy the console version now is the perfect opportunity to try Darksiders for yourself."

Ships Ahoy - The Sims 3: Escape to Barnacle Bay

The Sims 3 Store now offers Escape to Barnacle Bay, a new expansion for The Sims 3 that offers your little people an island getaway along with new Sims, new items, and new locations. Here's word on what this entails: "An island nestled in the Simuyan Sea, Barnacle Bay is a vibrant vacation getaway with stunning beaches, campgrounds, parks, and a curiously modern downtown. First settled by pirates, fisherman, and artists - the world's inhabitants now enjoy relaxing at Smuggler's Beach and letting loose at The Wanderer's Watering Hole. Will Your trip be a vacation or a staycation?"

Atari Games Online

Atari GO is a new "games as a service initiative" from Atari that includes affiliate, developer and marketing initiatives "to help game developers navigate the increasing complexities of reaching a fragmented casual and social audience wherever and whenever they play," though "Atari IP Development will also continue as Atari leverages its classic portfolio and new IP for the casual online marketplace." Among other things, they are offering websites the chance to earn affiliate fees by hosting microtransaction-driven games. IndustryGamers talks with Thom Kozik, Executive VP, Online & Mobile at Atari, about the initiative to learn more of what they have in store. Thom offers his perspective on history, saying: "Atari excels at being able to exploit an existing global audience in the tens of millions who are lifelong fans of our casual, MMO and triple-A titles." His command of history isn't perfect, though, as he states: "From most any perspective, Atari invented the casual game marketplace, and this has been at the core of our businesses since 1972," which isn't really very accurate, as the company that currently bears the Atari moniker started life in 1993 under the name GT Interactive, later becoming Infogrames, and only adopting the Atari name in 2003.

38 Studios Move Begins

38 Studios announces they have leased office space for their move to downtown Providence Rhode Island from Maynard Massachusetts in a deal that inludes a business loan. "The new location of 38 Studios will be a significant economic boost to downtown, the City and the State," says Daniel Baudouin, Executive Director, The Providence Foundation. "In addition to the high paying jobs and disposable income that 38 Studios will produce, their downtown location should result in the development of a strong, growing cluster of businesses in digital media and design, two potential targets of growth for downtown and the State."

Quote of the Day

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter comments to IncGamers on the potential impact of OnLive on the next generation of console systems: "I'm not sure where OnLive will be by then. If they can deliver a similar 3D/virtual reality experience (to Move and Kinect), we may not see new consoles succeed." Thanks joao via Computer and Video Games.

The Witcher 2 Trailer

An Escape the Prison Story Trailer from The Witcher 2 Assassins of Kings is online, offering a look at gameplay from CD Projekt's upcoming RPG sequel. The clip includes gameplay, some stealth, character interactions, naked boobies, and some Rashomon-style storytelling. Thanks Computer and Video Games.

BioShock Infinite Interview

We Talk To Ken Levine About BioShock Infinite on Giant Bomb (NSFW) is Jeff Gerstmann's lengthy video interview with the Irrational Games designer along with other Irrational staff, going into detail about their ambitions for BioShock Infinite, their upcoming shooter (sort-of) prequel. They discuss the new game environment of the floating city of Columbia, and Ken coyly implies that playing the game will help the player understand how the new game connects with the underwater city of Rapture in the first two BioShock games. Ken also describes their mixed feeling abut multiplayer support as part of an extensive discussion of gameplay concepts. The watchword of the interview is "fantastical."

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood Interview

The Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood interview on UGDB chats with Ubisoft Montreal producer Vincent Pontbriand about Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, the next installment in their stealth/action series. Topics include the game's setting, new locations and environments, research, the implications of adding multiplayer support, new skills, new weapons, new missions, side missions, mounts, the Jesper Kyd soundtrack, and more.

A playable demo for ArcaniA: Gothic 4 is now available as a sample of the next installment in this series of role-playing games. Our attempts to install the demo have been thwarted by corrupted files, but we've received assurances that the demo is working properly. Tamte Calls Out Kotick on Indies

Atomic Games president and former Bungie VP Peter Tamte calls out Bobby Kotick in a letter to the editor on Kotaku following the Activision CEO's recent comment calling Bungie "probably the last remaining high quality independent developer" (thanks joao). Tamte tells Kotick: "If this is true, you're screwed," pointing out that the indie developers that giants like Activision enjoy gobbling up are the source of many of the industry's innovations. In the end, he shifts gears, and challenges the assertion that Activision is a leader in online gaming, connecting this back to the indie theme:

You've called Activision the industry's online leader. If you think the newest Call of Duty online experience is that innovative, let players buy just the online part of Call of Duty Black Ops and charge them a fair price.

In fact, we'll make you a deal. Let consumers buy just the online part of Call of Duty, and we'll give you a starring role in our new online game, Breach. Trust me, starring in your own videogame would give you huge street cred. We've even mocked up a screenshot to show you how cool you'd look in Breach.

As an independent developer, Atomic can't spend its way to big sales, like Activision can. We have to innovate. So, if you're confident Activision can innovate without independent developers, this is your opportunity to prove it.

BioShock Infinite Interview

The BioShock Infinite interview on Eurogamer talks with Shaun Robertson, lead artist on Irrational Games' upcoming high-flying shooter prequel. They discuss the game's paranormal elements, adding variety to combat compared with the original BioShock, enemies, visuals, the unclear relationship between Infinite and the previous BioShocks, and more. They also note separately his comment on scripted sequences, which Shaun says will be used sparingly, saying: "It will be a game that'll definitely have a couple of set pieces, but it's not going to be watching a movie and going from big moment to big moment to big moment."

Blade Kitten & Demo Released

Blade Kitten is now available, offering an action/adventure game from Krome Studios based on the comic book series created by Steve Stamatiadis. Here's word on the game: "In Blade Kitten, a prequel to the comics set three years earlier, players are invited into the world of Hollow Wish where they take on the role of Kit Ballard, one of the best bounty hunters in the business. With her pink hair and tail, Kit is part cat, part girl - and fully lethal. As one of the last of her species, Kit commands her unique 'Darque Blade' hovering sword to defeat enemies. Also along for the ride is Skiffy, Kit’s laid-back sidekick who lends a hand in collecting items, solving puzzles, and when needed, serves as Kit’s protector." The game is available for Windows as well as through the PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE Arcade. The PC edition can be purchased through the Blade Kitten website, the Atari Website, and Steam. There's also a playable demo, which is available from Atari, Steam, AtomicGamer, and Gamer's Hell.

Enjoy the new website, all the features and the newelly [sic] released Baldur's Gate."

Out of the Blue

We caught the first episode of the season for Modern Family last night, and it continues to entertain, offering a mainstream take on Arrested Development-style humor. On a related note, we also enjoyed the debut episode of Running Wilde, the new offering from Arrested creator Mitch Hurwitz starring AD alum Will Arnett. By virtue of being the pilot episode it was a little exposition-heavy, but it looks like a lot of fun too. On a related note, in an interview on the Howard Stern show yesterday, Arnett once again stated that the Arrested Development movie will definitely happen. I'm not sure how this will turn out after all this time, but I'll eagerly give it a shot if it happens.

Bronze Announced

Dreamspike Studios And Shrapnel Games announce Bronze, an ancient historical turn-based strategy game for Windows set in Mesopotamia during the Bronze Age, saying the game is currently in final testing, with a release date still to be announced. The Bronze Website is live, with more information, and we have a set of Bronze screenshots showing what to expect, and the announcement makes a point about how easy the game will be to mod, saying: "From a mod standpoint Bronze is open enough that someone could alter many aspects of the game with a simple text editor, right down to creating new maps." Here's a bit on the game itself: "Bronze offers players an impressive amount of gameplay challenge. First, there are the ten campaigns set in the Early, Middle, and Late Bronze Ages. Each campaign features multiple civilizations of increasing difficulty to play, as you lead your chosen people to conquer the known lands using a strategic map that is slowly uncovered as you win tactical battles. Next, there is Survival mode, in which you take one civilization and see how long it can last against a multitude of foes. Finally, you can create your own custom matches and tournaments, and even play Hotseat against three other players."

Dark Age of Camelot Patched

The Camelot Herald heralds the release of a new patch that's now live in Dark Age of Camelot, updating Mythic's MMORPG to version 1.106. They offer a complete set of patch notes, and also condense them down into this list of highlights:

  • All Aurulite items have had their quality increased to 99%.
  • An all new Quest hub has been added to several low level Battlegrounds offering a series of repeatable Monster and Player killing quests. These quests will reward players richly in both Experience and Aurulite!
  • Improvements have been made across the board for all Celtic dual classes in Hibernia. A boost has been given in growth rate and attack bonuses on several styles in this line.

On the GOG.com Hoax

GOG.com has three of the four promised new videos dealing with the "revival" of the DRM-free online marketplace after its self-inflicted wounds. Also, PC Gamer has a statement from the service responding to the widespread unhappiness users have expressed at their implication that the service was coming to an end, offering another apology with a creative 'we're sorry... look, a pony!' approach, saying: "First of all we’d like to apologize to everyone who felt deceived or harmed in any way by the closedown of GOG.com. As a small company we don’t have a huge marketing budget and this why [sic] we could not miss a chance to generate some buzz around an event as big as launching a brand new version of our website and even more important [sic], bringing back Baldur’s Gate to life!"

More QOL vs David Allen

The Real History of Quest Online on David Allen's Blog has once again been removed, with the former Quest Online front man explaining: "Pending the superior court action, this posting has been temporarily removed." Not unexpectedly, Allen's successor Derek Smart has something to say about this in his own blog, describing the legal back-and-forth that's been going on as Quest Online and Allen continue in their lawsuits against each other, and commenting on the "false, defamatory or otherwise confidential material" Allen's post contained, saying: "Which means that the blog goes down and anyone posting any excerpts from it, is required to take it down or be sued for republication of defamatory material, be held in contempt of court etc."

TGC Insolvent; Kalypso Acquires Demonicon

Kalypso Media announces the formation of Noumena Studios, a new studio that will take over development of the action/RPG Demonicon for release in 2012. Kalypso acquired this intellectual property from The Games Company (TGC), which they say "recently went into insolvency," adding that Noumena is staffed by 17 employees from Silver Style Entertainment, which had been TGC's internal development studio. As part of the deal, Kalypso has also acquired the remaining distribution and publishing rights for PC titles Simon the Sorcerer 5, Goin' Downtown, and Everlight. "After a turbulent insolvency, we are very pleased to have Kalypso as a key investor and partner," said André Schmitz of Noumena Studios. "We are happy that Kalypso will retain the core team -- as they did with the creation of Gaming Minds Studios after purchasing Ascaron's assets. Kalypso has also shown that long-term positive cooperation and stable growth are high priorities for them."

GOG.com Re-launch Tomorrow [Updated]

GOG.com now offers an explanation for the recent closure of their site, which turns out to have been a publicity stunt, as many had speculated. This is part of a run-up to a re-launch of the service at 8:00 am EDT tomorrow morning, and they currently have a timer counting down to that point. They also offer a trailer where the site's cofounders dress as monks to admit to the "sin" of their hoax, and express regrets to their users, though they don't seem to take too much responsibility for the fallout of implying the service might be ending, harkening back to a time when the industry didn't take itself so seriously. Update: Gamasutra has word from their online press conference confirming speculation that Baldur's Gate will be added to the service, saying the beloved D&D RPG will be available when they re-launch, bundled with the Tales of the Sword Coast add-on for $9.99 USD. Here's GOG.com's statement:

First of all we would like to apologize everyone who felt deceived or harmed in any way by us closing down GOG.com without any warning and without giving access to your games. We apologize for that from the bottom of our hearts!

Now it's time we put an end to all the speculations once and for all. It’s true that we decided that we couldn't keep GOG.com the way it was… so we won’t. As you probably know by now, GOG.com is entering its new era with an end of the two-years beta stage and we're launching a brand new GOG.com with new, huge releases.

The new GOG.com will launch at 8.00 a.m. EDT (2 p.m. CET). Later today we'll provide you here with 4 videos where you'll find all needed information about the current events, as well as news on the new GOG.com, the upcoming big releases and the summary of the last two years.

H.A.W.X. 2 Delayed

Posts to the Ubisoft Forums indicate the PC edition of Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. 2 is suffering another delay, as several customers report receiving word from the Ubi shop that the aerial combat sequel will be ready for download on November 16. Last month it was reported that the PC edition was pushed back until October 1, but the reports on the forums say they were told the game would be pushed back to November 1 at some point prior to this latest delay. No reason for the setback is mentioned. Thanks Big Download.

Elemental Status Report

A post on the Elemental Website has a status report on Elemental: War of Magic, as Stardock attempts to recover from the rocky launch of the fantasy-themed strategy game. The update explains why they are not issuing a tutorial just yet, in spite of the dire need for one, saying: "it’s obvious that a tutorial made now has a 100% chance of being obsolete once the major patches roll out. So opposed to putting in yet another feature that will need reworked, we’re putting that effort into feature implementation and bug fixes...so no tutorial yet. But it’s coming." There's also talk of improving the camera view to make for a more visually appealing game, and a bit on multiplayer play. The update concludes with word on future improvements: "We’ve been served a healthy slice of humble pie with Elemental’s release, but now we’re lucky enough to have a chance to redeem our ‘baby’ (I’m glad actually babies don’t get a metacritic score). If you’re reading this, then you’re keeping tabs on Elemental as we continue to improve it post-release, and for your support and continued feedback we’re immensely grateful. Hopefully all the great ideas we’ve received will be digested, organized, implemented, and accumulate into several groundbreaking updates that reach the potential mentioned throughout the reviews."

Out of the Blue

Today is the first day of fall in these parts, just barely, as the equinox hits at 11:09 local time tonight. It's been quite a summer around here, with repeated heat waves, a drought, and more electrical storms than you can shake a lighting rod at. Because of this, the area has exhibited an autumnal appearance for quite some time now, with brown leaves on the ground after baking off the trees in the heat.
