12:00 AM CST on Saturday, November 29, 2008

Zane C. Hodges, a leading New Testament scholar who influenced thousands of pastors and missionaries through his speeches and writings, died Sunday at his Mesquite home. He was 76.

"He impacted lives and drew people through his teachings," longtime friend Robert Calhoun said. "He left behind a legacy that will continue to touch the lives of those that he left behind."

Born June 15, 1932, Mr. Hodges grew up in Chambersburg, Pa., and came to Dallas in 1954 to further his Christian education.

He received a bachelor's degree from Wheaton College in Illinois and his master of theology degree from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1958.

In 1959, he became a professor at Dallas Theological Seminary and taught Greek until around 1986. He also served for several years as head of the school's New Testament department.

He was a pastor at Victor Street Bible Chapel, formerly The Old Mission in Dallas, for almost 50 years.

Devoting himself to promoting clear Gospel teachings, he also started Kerugma Inc. ministries.

According to another longtime acquaintance, Bob Wilkin, Mr. Hodges was a controversial figure around the world for his "free grace" view that the only condition of eternal life is faith in Christ.

Mr. Wilkin stated on his Web site, www.faithalone.org: "Zane has been like a father to me. ... He taught me so much about ministry and life."

"He's been my mentor," said Mr. Wilkin, who was advised by Mr. Hodges on his master's thesis and doctoral dissertation.

Mr. Hodges also served for nearly a decade on the board of Grace Evangelical Society, which Mr. Wilkin started in 1986. Mr. Hodges also helped Mr. Wilkin with his personal ministry.

Mr. Hodges published numerous journal and newsletter articles and several books, including The Hungry Inherit, The Gospel Under Siege, Grace in Eclipse, Absolutely Free!: A Biblical Reply to Lordship Salvation, Six Secrets of the Christian Life, Harmony with God, Power to Make War, and standalone commentaries on James and 1-3 John.

He and Art Farstad co-edited The Greek New Testament According to the Majority Text.

In addition to his Christian service, Mr. Hodges collected original comics and was an avid science fiction reader.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother. Mr. Hodges has no other known survivors.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, 1808 W. Camp Wisdom Road in Dallas. A viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Home, 1910 Eastgate Drive in Garland.
