A World Championships for rowing was first held in 1962 and the event has been staged annually since 1974.

During Olympic years, only boat classes that do not compete in the Olympic Games take part in the World Championships and the event is held at the same time and at the same venue as the Junior World Championships.

New Zealand has staged the World Championships once before, in 1978, also at Lake Karapiro.
