St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg, also called the Venice of the North, is renowned for being one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The city, which has approx. 4 million inhabitants and is the second largest city of Russia, is rich in culture and tradition.

Its "white nights" are legendary not only in literature, and St. Petersburg is an important economic, academic and cultural centre.

The city partnership between St. Petersburg and Graz was established in July 2001 with an official twinning agreement. The artistic connection between Graz and St. Petersburg has been vivid and rich over the years; art organisations arrange exchanges and the renowned conductor of the Mariinsky Theatre, Maestro Valery Gergiev, visited Graz with his ensemble already a number of times.
