Five SHOCKING Leaks From DC Comics!

September 21st, 2010
Author Lucas Siegel

Everyone is waiting for big news from DC Comics this week, wondering if they’ll be staying or going. We got our hands on some leaked notes from a major company-wide meeting, and let me tell you, their plans are truly shocking!

1) That’s No Moon: DC Comics will be moving to a “to scale” moonbase modeled off of the original JLA design.

2) You know what it means: Not sure what this means, but repeated over and over in the meeting notes is one word: Jabberwocky. What IS Jabberwocky? What, you don’t know? I mean, I know. Of course I know. I was just checking if YOU knew…

3) DC is going all-digital for monthly comics through Zune Marketplace: Yup, they’re completely abandoning all the work done on PSP and iOS devices, instead opting for the 10 people that own Zunes to have digital comics. It’s an unprecedented move, not likely to ever be seen again.

4) Geoff Johns is a Robot: Well, can’t say this one was kept very secret. Engineered by the Guardians of the Universe to police the stars, Geoff Johns broke free of his original programming and came to Earth to write comics. Also revealed, the Manhunters will return in a special cross-promotion with Twitter and 7-11 called “Infinite Slurpees.”

5) Final Crisis was all a big misunderstanding: In a meeting between Grant Morrison and Dan DiDio, when Grant Morrison asked, “What did you do in animation?” Didio said “Reboot” and Morrison said, “Hey, no problem.”

So there you have it folks, all the gigantic DC News. Hard to believe that’s what we’ve been waiting on since the restructuring a year ago!

*this is a work of fiction. Unless you’re Rich Johnston, then you can reprint this all as fact, Rich. ;)

Loeb’s 2nd SUPERMAN/BATMAN Arc Getting DVD Treatment

June 28th, 2010
Author Lucas Siegel

superman-batman-apocalypse-dvd

UPDATE: MTV Splashpage has confirmed the news, as well as gotten a bit of casting. Geek entertainment veteran Summer Glau, of Firefly and Sarah Connor Chronicles fame, will be voicing Supergirl! Still no official word, however, if the animation will follow Michael Turner’s art as a template.

Well, this is just Jeph Loeb’s day, ain’t it?

This morning, Marvel announced that Jeph Loeb is now Executive Vice President, Head of Television, and will be in charge of bringing more Marvel properties to TV. Now, according to Superman Homepage, who acquired the cover art for the next DCAU project, we learn that another arc of his Superman/Batman run is coming to small screens via DVD.

After Superman/Batman: Public Enemies‘ success, Warner Home Video will be bringing Superman/Batman: Apocalypse to DVD and Blu-Ray on September 28, 2010. An official announcement is expected at Comic-con International: San Diego this July. The cover art shows Darkseid and the “Evil Supergirl” designed by deceased artist Michael Turner. These were the two key characters in the second arc of Jeph Loeb’s run, used to re-introduce Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El to the DCU.

Also of note is the bottom corner of the case… wherein the next short film, Green Arrow, is also announced.

Bruce Timm did just assure viewers that more DC Animated videos were on the way. What do you think of the next feature?

ACTION COMICS Writer Paul Cornell Exclusive to DC Comics

June 22nd, 2010
Author Lucas Siegel

“I’m delighted to have signed exclusively to DC Comics. The work Pete, Matt, Wil and I are doing as a team on Action Comics has been tremendously satisfying, and I’m enjoying my other creative partnerships here just as much. I feel thoroughly cosseted! And hey, Lex Luthor! Who wouldn’t be psyched to get to play with name recognition like that?”

That’s how Paul Cornell announced his exclusive with DC Comics on DCU Blog The Source today. His exclusive is part of the swath of Superman related news hitting this week, as the Man of Steel’s writers, artists, and more talk about his significance on the DC house blog.

No word on the “other creative partnerships” but it’s safe to say the writer, who previously has written for Marvel Comics for the last 3 years or so, has some other big projects up his sleeve. He did tease that his star of Action Comics, Lex Luthor, will face-off against  Deathstroke, Vandal Savage, the Secret Six, Gorilla Grodd, and of course, Larfleeze the Orange Lantern.

For more on Superman, check the main page later today and all day tomorrow.

Watch This Now: LIVE-ACTION MORTAL KOMBAT Trailer… but what is it?

June 8th, 2010
Author Lucas Siegel

UPDATE June 9, 2010: Mystery SOLVED. This is in fact a SPEC trailer for a Mortal Kombat live-action movie. According to actress Jeri Ryan, seen in the clip as Sonya Blade, the movie is not yet greenlit, and this was basically a “tryout” by a director. From her twitter:

Okay, so… Mortal Kombat. It’s not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film.I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB’s reaction to it was.

She also made a plea to fans that enjoyed it to reach out to Warner Bros and ask them to make it, though she didn’t know how. Your best bet? Comment here that you want this movie to be made, and I’ll send the link over to Warner PR.

Original Story June 8: Is this the trailer to a new Live Action Mortal Kombat Movie?

Is this a live-action trailer to a new, relaunched Mortal Kombat game?

Those are the questions being asked by fans of the franchise today. It’s clearly a professional trailer, with some major star power from across the science fiction/genre worlds, but there’s no real indication as to just what it is. The one thing we can say for absolute certain: it is AWESOME. Peep it below, and tell us what you think this is for. We’ll be at E3 next week to see if we can get some answers from the franchise’s new stewards, Warner Bros.

Johns and Fraction Want a GREEN LANTERN/IRON MAN Crossover

June 8th, 2010
Author Lucas Siegel

Twitter brings a lot of daily entertainment, and a fun way to get short communicae from some of your favorite comics writers, artists, editors, and of course, journalists. Sometimes, it also spawns some great freaking ideas.

While Matt Fraction was talking about the impending return of the many-ringed villain The Mandarin to the pages of Invincible Iron Man, Geoff Johns had a sudden idea:

Fanboyism and Brand Loyalty

The Misconception: You prefer the things we own over the things we don’t because we made rational choices when we bought them.

The Truth: You prefer the things you own because you rationalize your past choices to protect your sense of self.

The Internet changed the way people argue.

Check any comment system, forum or message board and you will find fanboys going at it, debating why their chosen product is better than the other guy’s.

In modern consumer cultures like America, people compete for status through comparing their taste in products. (You can read more on how that works here: Selling Out).

Mac vs. PC, PS3 vs. XBox 360, iPhone vs. Android – it goes on and on.

Usually, these arguments are between men, because men will defend their ego no matter how slight the insult. These are also usually about geeky things that cost lots of money, because these battles take place on the Internet where tech-savvy people get rowdy, and the more expensive a purchase, the greater the loyalty to it. Community’s Donald Glover 4 Spider-Man?!

May 31st, 2010
Author Lucas Siegel

Donald4Spider-man?Wait wait wait. What?

So, Community’s Donald Glover (who, btw, is extremely funny in stand-up. Highly recommend seeing him if you get the chance) launched a bit of a campaign last night, and well, it seems to be gaining some ground.

On his Twitter page (mildly NSFW language), Glover started things off with this retweet, referring to a post over at our friends io9:

RT wittyallusion : @io9 wrote a post about casting a non-white #Spiderman for the reboot. some1 suggested @MrDonaldGlover. I agree with this

He then began to ask people to make it happen, with a hashtag: #donald4spiderman

Then things got out of control.

On his tumblr blog (mildly NSFW language), Donald posted about his desire to play the webslinger, with a slightly ridiculous photoshopped image of himself. Then some fans made a facebook group, which at press time has over 1200 members. While that won’t exactly get him cast, it’s not bad for about 12 hours. His hashtag got to the point where it was trending #2 in Chicago and #3 in NYC- no small feat.

So what do you think? Could Glover’s goofy antics from one of the best sitcoms on TV translate into the superheroics of Peter Parker?

Green Lantern: The Animated Series On The Way

May 27th, 2010
Author Lucas Siegel

Just in from The Hollywood Reporter, it seems Cartoon Network let early word slip of a coming Green Lantern Animated Series on the network.

Not much was said about the show, other than it is a joint venture between Warner Bros and Turner Networks (CN’s owner). The show is based on the DC Comics character who has a live action movie coming in Spring 2011, and could be on the air soon after the movie, in Fall 2011.

SMALLVILLE SEASON 10 is the Final Season

May 19th, 2010
Author Lucas Siegel

Just in from EW.com and others, Smallville will fly off TV stations after next year’s 10th Season.

The show, featuring a “young” Clark Kent, has increasingly pushed into Superman territory, involving more characters from the Superman mythos and the DC Universe as a whole in the last two years, especially.

The final season was due to be announced on Thursday at the CW Upfronts, but lead actor Tom Welling let the cat out of the bag early at an event last night.

Now the question is: at what point in this final season will we see the cape and hear the name Superman? Will they save it for the very end, or transform him earlier? We also have the promised threat of Darkseid from teases this season… will that be the final big bad?

The Cape Trailer- Wait, Could This Actually Rock?

May 18th, 2010
Author Lucas Siegel

David mentioned just yesterday that a new superhero show called The Cape had been ordered by NBC, and could be seen as a replacement for Heroes. He also noted that the show’s description sounded like pretty much the cheesiest possible show ever. Then, I saw the trailer.

Hmm, either this is one damn fine editor, or this show might actually wind up pretty awesome. In fact, with the Batman Begins-esque training scene, this could be the closest thing to a mature live-action Batman TV Show we’re likely to get.

SPIDER-MAN, GHOST RIDER Get One-Shots for SHADOWLAND

May 14th, 2010
Author Lucas Siegel

Over on CBR, they have the first announcement of another chapter in the Shadowland saga, SHADOWLAND: SPIDER-MAN. Written by Dan Slott and drawn by Paulo Siqueira, the one-shot will feature Spider-Man and Shang Chi teaming up in the Shadowland against Spidey’s BND nemesis Mr. Negative.

Slott assured them that “you’re good to go” on this One-Shot whether you’re just reading Amazing Spider-Man and want an extra Spidey story, or if you’re just reading Shadowland and want the extra chapter there.

On Marvel.com, Ghost Rider joins in the fight in his own one-shot as well. Rob Williams writes this one, with artist Clayton Crain, who should be plenty familiar to GR fans. Rob Williams doesn’t give away which Ghost Rider is involved in the one-shot, and teases that his status as Spirit of Vengeance will be tested heavily.

So, two more one-shots added to the list, this is becoming a pretty big “little” crossover. Is Shadowland and its companion pieces shaping up to something you want to read?

ALL GLORY TO HYPNOTOAD: Futurama Cast Signs On!

July 31st, 2009
Author Lucas Siegel

This isn’t the first source I’d normally go to for Hollywood casting news, but the Toronto Star is reporting that the cast of Futurama has reached a deal with the producers to come back to the show when it returns to TV!

The Star has learned exclusively that the voice cast of Futurama has just signed a new contract…The compromise agreement, with the studio paying more and the actors accepting less, comes after the announcement of a 26-episode pick-up here by Comedy Central.

My Guess? The cast sent in Hypnotoad, and he got things done.

Update: It’s been confirmed, by individual actors, Hollywood Reporter, and Variety. WIN!

Welcome to Webcomics: Let’s Be Friends Again

July 14th, 2009
Author Lucas Siegel

I took a little twitter poll today (you’re following us, right? If not, click on that link and follow us. Go on, we’ll wait), asking what people wanted to see more. Well, to prove that we’ll actually listen when we ask for these kinds of suggestions, here’s our first article born directly via comments on Twitter.

Let’s Be Friends Again is a webcomic about, well, I’ve read through their entire archive, and to give you an accurate list, the rest of this post would just be topics. Let’s just say if you’re reading this, chances are you’ve had a conversation not unlike Curt and Chris’s that they so generously share with the world here. It’s also a safe bet that if you read any one, 10, or 90 of their comics, you’ll be laughing out loud repeatedly.

Be warned, much of this is NSFW (EDIT: As readers have pointed out, your milage may vary on the label “NSFW.” Just know, it includes lots of swearing and the occasional bloody mess) content. Like this MKvsDCU sendup from last December, for example. The mixture of slice-of-life conversations, one-off topic strips, and some really solid comedic writing and art make this a great example of what webcomics can and should be. This is a continuation of the kind of storytelling comic strips in newspapers used to have, aged for readers who used to read them and are now adults. It’s webcomics for, frankly, people who are most likely to actually read webcomics. It doesn’t try to be too high brow, but is still intelligent, it doesn’t try to hard to be funny, but it makes you laugh.

This was one of the best suggestions I’ve ever received of a new webcomic to read. It now has a permanent place in my bookmarks, and I highly recommend you all go check it out as well.

Superman Films On Hold Until “At Least 2012″

July 13th, 2009
Author Lucas Siegel

All-Star Superman, Vol. 1

DC and Warners may have won the latest bout in the ongoing Superman trials, but that doesn’t mean they plan to jump into action on a new Superman movie just yet. In a Variety report on Warners’ upcoming “tentpole” flicks for the next two years, the Man of Steel is notably missing. Alan Horn, head of the studio, even publicly stated that there won’t be another Superman until 2012 at the earliest.

The recently cast Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds, is the only confirmed big budget DC title, due to hit theaters in sector 2814 on June 17, 2011. Warners “hopes” the willful hero will be joined in theaters that year by Director Chris Nolan’s third Batman film, the follow up to last year’s record setting Dark Knight, but Nolan has yet to even publicly decide the general direction, story, or villains for the surefire hit, whenever it does come.

As for what will be hopefully filling seats until the Kryptonian hero flies onto the big screen again, there are no shortage of potential box office smashers from the venerable hit maker, though they are at a slightly slower pace than previous years, due to the recent Writer’s Guild strike and the slowing economy. Three Harry Potter films, starting with this Wednesday’s Half-Blood Prince, are on their way, joined by two Hobbit movies, Sherlock Holmes, and Clash of the Titans.

Spider-man 4 Has Yet Another Writer

July 9th, 2009
Author Lucas Siegel

Still on track for a May 6, 2011 release, Spider-man 4 has another big name writer taking a swing at the script, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Gary Ross, who has previously worked with the film’s star Tobey Maguire on Pleasantville and Seabiscuit, will write the third major draft of the screenplay, to which Maguire and director Sam Raimi are already attached.

Playwright David Lindsay-Abaire, who won a Pulitzer in 2007 and most recently wrote music and lyrics for the currently-on-Broadway “Shrek” musical (look out, more Spidey dance numbers!) previously tried his hand at the web-slinger’s next on screen adventure, as did James Vanderbilt, writer of thriller Zodiac.

Some may see three high profile writers as a bad portent, but it should be noted that the grand majority of Hollywood movies take several writers and several drafts to get hammered out. Being the fourth film, Raimi will likely have significant changes he’ll make as Director as well. The current ongoing comic, Amazing Spider-man, of course also has a team of writers telling Peter Parker’s stories, rather than a single writer doing a long-form multiyear arc.
