USS Guinevere (SP-512), 1917-1918

The patrol vessel USS Guinevere was built in 1908 by George Lawley & Sons of Boston, Massachusetts, as a 499 gross ton steam and sail yacht. In June 1917 the Navy purchased her from Edgar Palmer of New York, placing her in commission in July. Guinevere crossed the Atlantic to Brest, France, in August 1917 and was thereafter employed on escort and patrol duties off western France. On 26 January 1918, while so engaged, she ran aground. Though no lives were lost in the accident, Guinevere was not saved. Her wreck was sold to a French firm in June 1919.
