Oscar 2002 after parties

ELTON JOHN AIDS FOUNDATION

March 26, 2002

The 10th annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscar party co-sponsored by In Style to celebrate the 74th Academy Awards was, yet again, the hot ticket to have on Hollywood's biggest night.

How hot? Both best actress Halle Berry and best actor Denzel Washington were there post-wins, as were plenty of other big stars. The glamorous Hollywood crowd spent the evening at L.A.'s Moomba restaurant -- kicking off the night with cocktails and a silent auction, then moving onto dinner, and finally settling in to be serenaded by Soluna, Ryan Adams and Sir Elton John himself. Best yet, the event raised half a million dollars for the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Fox, Rachel Griffiths, Angela Bassett, Jon Bon Jovi, Sir Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Sting and Trudie Styler, Sissy Spacek, Kevin Spacey, Donatella Versace, Jennifer Tilly, Benicio Del Toro, Boris Becker, Jessica Biel, Ben Chaplin, Joan Collins, Kelsey Grammer, Daryl Hannah, Jill Hennessy, Don Johnson, Heidi Klum, Bai Ling, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ricky Martin, Ian McKellan, Mark Ruffalo, Naomi Watts, Jon Voight, Tobey Maguire and many others.

Special-events designer Colin Cowie set the stage using Oscar gold for his 1940s-meets-2002 decor. Upon entering, guests checked out the dazzling items silently auctioned to benefit the AIDS Foundation. Next, a five-course gourmet dinner during the Oscar telecast. Guests kept their fingers crossed that theirs would be the ballots to win the evening's grand prize-a men's and women's Chopard watch.

Bon Jovi in shocked surprise as he realized that Dylan was seated at his table; Berry being hugged by Spacek in the VIP room; Adams and John performing "Rocket Man" together; Olympic gold medalist Derek Parra meeting John, who exclaimed, "I'm never going to get one of these!"

Not everyone ended the night clutching a gold Oscar or the gold Chopard, but they did go home with a bag full of goodies. Included in the mix: CDs from performers Elton, Soluna and Adams, Marc Jacobs perfume, MAC cosmetics and Rocher chocolates, a reminder of just how sweet a night Oscar 2002 was.
