GRIMSBY Town crashed out of the FA Cup before the First Round proper of the competition as they were deservedly beaten by Tamworth in the final qualifying round.

After a promising opening half-hour when Grimsby created several good chances, they were left to rue missed opportunities as the Midlands side took control of the game.

And after rescuing the original tie with a late equaliser, Town fell behind in this Blundell Park replay just before half-time, when striker Kyle Perry scored the only goal of the game with a header from close range.

The Mariners had early opportunities after the restart but as the match went on, it was the neat and tidy Tamworth side who looked more and more comfortable as the minutes ticked away.

Try as they might, Town could not force their way back into the tie for a second time, leaving a sparse home crowd frustrated and sending the team spiralling out of the competition.

And with the last chance of a meeting with a Football League side, in the form of Crewe Alexandra, now over for the season, Town must wait until December for their next taste of knockout action in the non-league-only FA Trophy.

Boss Neil Woods made two changes to the Grimsby side that grabbed a last-gasp leveller at the Lamb Ground on Saturday to force this replay.

Out went Tom Corner and Mark Hudson, with Michael Coulson and Rob Eagle replacing them in the starting XI.

Steve Croudson made another appearance between the sticks, with Sheffield Wednesday unwilling to let loan keeper Richard O'Donnell become cup-tied.

Bradley Wood lined up on the right side of a four-man defence that also included Scott Garner, Rob Atkinson and Lee Ridley.

Coulson started on the right wing, with Micky Cummins and Lee Peacock in the centre of the park and Eagle on the left of midfield.

Alan Connell, whose goal brought the game back to North East Lincolnshire, was partnered up front by Peter Bore.

Woods chose to name the maximum seven substitutes allowed in the competition, so it was Rob Peet, Hudson, Kempson, Michael Leary, Dwayne Samuels, Josh Fuller and Corner on a busier than normal bench.

Players to watch in the Tamworth side would include England C striker Perry, who proved to be a handful for the Town defence when the two sides met in a league encounter in the West Midlands in September.

Also out to cause problems was tricky former Boston winger Danny Thomas, while ex-Scunthorpe midfielder Neil MacKenzie would be out to repeat his goalscoring feat of Saturday, as his strike had the Lambs ahead in the tie.

Town kicked off in a very low-key atmosphere but it was the visitors, attacking their handful of travelling supporters, who had the first opportunity of the game when they won a second minute corner, although Jay Smith's flag-kick was cleared by Atkinson.

Grimsby did not take long to fashion a chance of their own, as Coulson broke through the middle before finding Eagle on the right. He crossed to the far post

Left-back Scott Barrow smashed a 20-yard shot well wide with five minutes on the clock for Tamworth, before Atkinson headed wide after Town's first corner of the game had been won by Bore.

Another early corner for the visitors could have led to the opening goal when an unconvincing punch from Croudson sent the ball straight to MacKenzie on the edge of the penalty area but the midfielder fired wide.

A chance for the Mainers came when Connell sent a low through-ball forward for the pace of Bore but his first touch was too strong and visiting keeper James Severn raced off his line to dive on the ball.

Both sides were looking to attack as much as possible in the early stages of the game and Alex Rodman was the next to try his luck for the away side with a long-ranger that did not force Croudson into action as it sailed high and wide.

A Connell volley at the other end was deflected away for a corner on the right but Eagle's delivery was headed away by Perry.

Grimsby were beginning to take charge as the 20-minute mark approached and they had another good chance after Connell back-heeled for Eagle out on the right. The winger burst into the box and pulled the ball back for Bore but he could not convert the chance from eight yards.

MacKenzie sliced a shot wide for the Lambs after more good work by the lively Thomas down the left but the Mariners were still creating plenty of chances of their own.

Another opportunity went the home side's way on the half-hour when Smith gave the ball away to Bore and he picked out Connell, unmarked near the penalty spot. The leading scorer did not take the chance though, as keeper Severn collected the weak shot.

A let-off for Grimsby came when what looked like a deep cross from Seb Lake-Gaskin sailed over Croudson and bounced off the post, before it was scrambled away as Smith looked to pounce on the rebound.

Croudson was forced to push the ball over his bar after Rodman cut in from the left and turned inside the box before shooting from 15 yards.

The corner proved costly for Town as the ball came all the way across goal and when it was chipped back into the six-yard box by Rodman, PERRY had the simple task of nodding it into the net.

One minute of added time was allowed at the end of an entertaining first half, albeit one that had seen the Mariners fall behind in the contest after failing to take their own chances.

But there had been enough to suggest the game was far from over at 1-0 to the visitors, meaning it was still all to play for at the halfway mark.

No changes were made by either manager at the break and Grimsby could have been level again within two minutes of the restart. Eagle pushed the ball through for Bore to run into the box but his shot was straight at Severn.

At the other end, Smith failed to get the necessary direction on a free header when a cross from the left picked him out in front of goal.

As the game kept moving from end to end, Coulson beat his man on the Town right to get into the box, before pulling the ball back for Cummins to have a shot deflected over for a corner.

A scrappy phase followed as Grimsby tried a more direct style, playing a few long, high balls that were mostly mopped up by the Tamworth defence.

A better passage of play for the hosts came when a shot by Ridley was deflected away to Bore on the left. He played a short pass to Coulson inside the box and the ex-Barnsley man turned before having a shot blocked at the near post.

Danny Bradley replaced Lake-Gaskin for the visitors, before Coulson had another chance inside the penalty area, seeing an initial effort blocked and then a volleyed rebound produced the same result.

Tamworth were the team in control though, looking comfortable at the hour mark and going close to stretching their lead when Perry headed over the bar at the far post from a Rodman cross.

Mark Hudson replaced Cummins in the centre of the Town midfield and soon afterwards, Tom Corner came on in place of Coulson.

That prompted a switch in formation to 4-3-3, with Corner joining Bore and Connell up front.

Hudson went close with a curling shot from 25 yards soon after Corner's introduction but keeper Severn was able to watch the ball fly over his bar.

The impressive Rodman was given the time and space on the Tamworth right to pick out Perry with a cross on 75 minutes but this time, the striker could not get an effort on target.

Town were struggling to make much of an impression in front of goal as the minutes ticked away, with several balls into the box failing to find their targets or cause Severn to spring into action.

A Bore cross from the left was headed behind for a corner with eight minutes to go but Eagle's kick was glanced wide by Atkinson.

Josh Fuller replaced Wood for the last few minutes of the game as the Town manager looked to add another attack-minded player in a bid to rescue the game for the second time in four days.

Former Leicester midfielder Stefan Oaks was introduced for Tamworth in place of Perry with four minutes left to play.

A deep cross from Fuller was touched away by the fingertips of Severn as Town looked for the vital equaliser, before Connell's rebound was blocked.

The Mariners were given an extra four minutes to keep themselves in the Cup with the announcement of the added time to be allowed but it was the 51 travelling Tamworth supporters who were the more confident as the regulation 90 minutes ended.

Croudson saved from Rodman as Tamworth looked to seal their victory with a quick break halfway into the added time.

The rest of the game was played out inside the Tamworth half but try as they might, the Mariners could not force an equaliser like they had done in the first game between the two sides.

That means it will be the Lambs, not Grimsby, who will host Crewe Alexandra in the First Round Proper of the competition, as the Mariners instead look to Saturday's league match at home to Eastbourne Borough.
