Episode 5:Honoring Russ

Last week President Barack Obama named William Felton Russell as one the 15 recipients of the Medal of Freedom the Nation’s highest civilian honor, which is “presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.” We discuss Russell’s game and his legacy, plus the question if anyone can fit the bill as the next Bill Russell? All that and a discussion of what we’re thankful for.

As always, the show starts after the jump.

Welker is a beast/Frankenstein Perk

Another fantastic piece on the sensei’s rehab, this time by the curmudgeon known as Peter May:

“My motivation was Wes Welker,” Perkins said. “Watching him come back after six months and now he’s on the field, without a brace. That’s unbelievable. I watch him. But at the same time, you also have to listen to your own body. I feel great. But I still use him as motivation. I come in, put in my rehab and think of him. I do more when they ask me to do more.”

Of course Welker and Perk have had time to meet and discuss, here’s Welker’s take:
“He’s kind of getting to the stage where he can do some things, move around, but it’s one of those deals that you have to stay after it. Even the days you don’t want to work on it, those are the most important days to make sure you are working on it. There were a lot of days where I woke up and it was like, ‘No way!’ I won’t be able to do anything. But you warm it up and then you’re able to get a good day’s work in, where a lot of times people take that day off.”

And on a slightly creepier note, May details Perk’s procedure and his frankenstein-ed knee:
” Perkins, like most big men in the NBA, has jumper’s knee, or patellar tendinitis. And because of the life he leads, he needs that area to be as strong as it can be, deterioration notwithstanding. There’s a third option available, however, called an allograft. That involves using a tissue from a cadaver. That is what McKeon did for Perkins”

Which of course only makes me think of Phil Hartman (RIP):

We don’t like anybody on the other team.

I know its Shaq and the article is on Jermaine, its just a great pic!

On Friday, Jessica Camerato of CSNNE.com gave us some very interesting perspecive on the unique relationship between Perk and Jermaine O’Neal, “Former foes are now friends as Celtics”:

“Me and him have had so many altercations when we played against each other,” Jermaine O’Neal told CSNNE.com. “You always wonder when you go to a team where you’ve had some run-ins with some guys, how will guys take to you?”

“[We clicked] from Day One, really. He came in right away, shook my hand, welcomed me there.”

“He believes in his team, whatever’s best for the team. I think he understands my thought process and my approach to the game about winning. And that’s what it’s about.”

“Here there’s just one language – win, win, win, championship, championship, championship,” said O’Neal. “And that’s all that we talk about.”

Here’s how the Sensei saw it:
“I just wanted to let him know it’s on the court, it’s not outside of that. I’m a great teammate, but when you’re on the other team, I’m really going at your head. But I wanted to show him there isn’t any tension outside of basketball, no beef or nothing, and just kind of welcome him with open arms.”

Here’s a little memory from O’neals Raptor days:
