Laff Box
By BOB DAVIES
On the way
to the bank
pockets stuffed with checks
from corporate bosses
the President's aide laughs
it's his secret
laugh
at his own
secret fantasy:
The President
is listening
to a speech he has made to the people
whatevers he calls them
and in the midst of his most serious words
Someone unknown
Someone has turned on the laff box.
The President
frantically
switches stations: again
same thing
laughter at his careful outline
of fears we must face.
Those difficult
declarative sentences
are hard for him
lined up row on row
like beer bottles.
Whatevers laughing
at the President!
Heh, heh, heh
the President's man laughs out loud.
He can't shoot all
their planes down. The whatevers are threatening
terror. They don't
seem to believe the man.

Haiti Report
By CAROLYN S. SCARR
They live, they die before
his eyes
as in the basement room
Pierre recounts the stories he has heard.
from distant friends, last seen
only two months past.
Moise is in hiding
don't know where.
I hope to hear from him again
in a few days.
Imprisoned torturers
broken free by well-armed friends
drag from their homes
the witnesses against them.
In Gonaïves
thirty Lavalas supporters
are murdered in one day
execution style.
Cap-Haitien taken by armed
rebels
re-taken by its populace.
In early morning darkness
gunboat enters the harbor
heavy arms, new guns.
some fighters speaking Spanish
Once again Cap-Haitien
falls to foreign hands.
Old woman's house
is burned before her eyes.
Her daughter organized
bicentennial celebrations
-- crime enough.
Fighting despair, Pierre recounts
the stories he has heard.

Where We Seem to Be
By LARRY KEARNEY
I'll tell you where we seem
to be. we're trapped in a fold of nowhere with
a vicious pissant and a crowd of resentful. would-be torturers.
in case there's any doubt.
I wanted to mention. too.
that the things of Caesar can't be given to Caesar without
he break your body. lingeringly.
and that he'll do this
to your children too. I say this just in case
you're tired. like me.
and don't much care.
anymore.

Fully Free
By STEW ALBERT
Some days
the world doesn't seem worthy of a poem
but tears save it for the Muse.
Lord Bremer of Baghdad
proclaims he is the ultimate power
on Iraq's new constitution
and nothing offensive to his values
will be included
because Iraq is now a fully free nation
owned and operated
exclusively by the West.
The Democratic People's Shi'ites
also have a nifty proposal,
they can all vote in the first fully free elections
but not the Sunnis
who are just
way too chaotic and contentious
for something as genteel and sensitive
as ruling Iraq.
Investigators in Iraq
continue to report
an absolute absence of
Weapons of Mass Democracy
no potential for building them,
finding instead
boundless pain
so many unwritten poems.
Stew Albert runs the Yippie
Reading Room. His memoir, Who
the Hell is Stew Albert?, is now available at independent
bookstores or from Red Hen Press. For a personally autographed copy,
please send a check or money order for $22 (includes s&h)
to Stew Albert, Who The Hell. PO Box 13161, Portland OR 97213-0161.
