Une des manifestations les plus célèbres de la période de Noël en France, c'est la Fête des lumières à Lyon, mais en réalité elle n'a aucun rapport avec Noël, à part la proximité de sa date, le 8 décembre.

En 1850, les chefs religieux lyonnais ont annoncé un concours pour une statue qui serait mise au sommet de la colline de Fourvière. L'inauguration de l'œuvre du sculpteur gagnant deux ans plus tard devait être le 8 septembre (anniversaire de la naissance de la Vierge Marie), mais quand la Saône a débordé et inondé le chantier, la cérémonie a été décalée (mot du jour) au 8 décembre (date de l'Immaculée Conception).

Pour fêter la nouvelle statue, quelques Lyonnais avaient l'intention d'illuminer leurs maisons et appartements avec des bougies, mais le mauvais temps ce jour-là a obligé une deuxième remise de date, au 12 décembre. Néanmoins, toute la ville a impulsivement allumé des bougies le 8, et puis les gens sont descendus dans la rue pour regarder la ville illuminée d'un bout à l'autre. Avec la célébration de ce geste répandu et convivial, qui a aussi poussé les chefs religieux à allumer la chapelle de Fourvière, la Fête des lumières est née.

Dorénavant, les Lyonnais mettent des bougies ou des lumignons à leurs fenêtres et puis vont en ville pour profiter de l'illumination et partager de bons moments avec leurs amis et concitoyens.

Avec les Plans Lumières de 1989 et 2004, Lyon est devenu une référence mondiale dans le domaine de l'éclairage urbain, et la ville met en valeur ce savoir-faire pendant la Fête des lumières actuelle.

I'm a huge fan of Johnny Depp, and I love the fact that he lives in the South of France. Wouldn't it be fun to just run into him one day? In the meantime, he made some comments in an interview that I'd like to address:

"Good? I don't know. It's difficult still, the conjugation ... the masculine and feminine thing," he said in French with a hint of an American accent. Then, he added in slang. "It drives me nuts." Source: ABC News

En plus de Seyne, nous avons visité un autre village dans les Hautes-Alpes connu surtout pour sa station de ski : Risoul. Après avoir pris le mauvais chemin pendant plus de deux heures (longue histoire ; j'en parlerai une autre fois), nous avons enfin abordé (mot du jour) le dernier virage menant à la chambre d'hôtes La Maison de Joséphine, classée 3 épis*, où nous sommes restés pendant 3 nuits.

Le village de Risoul est mignon et nous avions une belle vue sur les champs et les montagnes depuis notre fenêtre. La table d'hôte bio-végétarienne était très bonne, et c'était sympa de bavarder avec deux couples français. Cependant, nous n'y avons mangé qu'une seule fois, parce que nous avions décidé de surtout pique-niquer pendant notre long voyage, afin de ne pas dépenser la moitié de notre budget dans les repas.

*Le classement en épis est un label de qualité proposé par Gîtes de France, qui indique, de manière très précise, le niveau de confort d'un logement particulier.

If you want to make your French sound more, well, French, one place to start is with your vocabulary. In French classes, you tend to learn the most common, basic terms. The adverb très is one example of a very common word that can be replaced by any of a number of synonyms, in both normal and informal registers. In the article Ask Dog Lady: What's dog etiquette in Paris?, the author translates "You have an adorable dog. May I pet your dog?" as Tu as un chien adorable. Puis-je pet votre chien?

The first major faux pas is that she suggests using the informal subject pronoun tu with a perfect stranger, rather than the polite vous. Although then in the second sentence, the polite possessive adjective votre shows up.

Even worse is that in French, pet does not mean "pet," but instead refers to flatulence.

I'm grateful that Dog Lady suggested saying Bonjour and then asking for permission to pet the dog in French, but the problem is that she clearly used an online translator, and it's just as clear that this is a terrible idea. Yes, online translators are good for getting the gist of something, if you're using them to translate from the language you don't speak into the one you do. But you should never use them the other way, because you really have no idea just what you might be saying. The correct way to say "May I pet your dog?" is Puis-je caresser votre chien ?

Interestingly, I tried to comment on Ask Dog Lady's article on the site where it was syndicated, but the comments button didn't seem to work. So then I went to her website, and the same column published there is missing the above sentences. I'm guessing someone already told her about the mistake and she was able to remove it from her own site, but there's nothing she can do about the syndicated article.

Ordinal numbers are used to express rank or position - in other words, ordinal numbers are used for ordering, as opposed to cardinal numbers which are for counting. Invités par un de nos amis hyérois, nous avons passé la première nuit de notre voyage, le 30 juin, dans sa maison de vacances à Seyne-les-Alpes. La route était magnifique - de belles montagnes, des champs infinis de fleurs, notamment des coquelicots. Le village de Seyne, lui, est dominé par Fort Vauban, une citadelle du XVIIe siècle.

Nous avons visité ensemble Le Lauzet-Ubaye, un village voisin qui est doté d'un petit lac bellissime et de l'église Saint-Laurent. Elle était fermée le soir de notre visite, mais la gardienne est passée par hasard et a gentiment ouvert la porte pour nous.

Le lendemain, nous avons fait une promenade en voiture pendant deux heures pour admirer un peu plus ce bel endroit avant de continuer vers le nord-est.
