IllFonic's Nexuiz

Hello all,

My name is Kedhrin Gonzalez, Lead Designer and Co-Founder of IllFonic, LLC. I know a lot of you in this community have a lot of questions as to what is going on with the recent announcement.

Before we get started, I'd like to forward you guys the official press release -> http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/107/1073381p1.html

Here is some press recently put up from Shogun Gamer -> http://www.shogungamer.com/news/preview ... ect-nexuiz

You can view higher resolution screen-shots we released last night on gamespot -> http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/nexu ... ow;thumb;3

So after we put the site up at Midnight MST (-8:00), I got on the #nexuiz IRC chat room to see what some of the concerns you guys in the community had. I'll try my best to address as many questions as I can.

Firstly, I'd like to mention who I am. I've been involved within the independent community since 1997. I started off with Quake and moved my way through mod communities, eventually getting involved with independent full games - then getting into professional game development. I fully understand and can relate to the concerns you guys have about this project and how this effects the game you love and have worked on for so long. Some of you may have heard of my personal project 'Quake 10 Year' I was working on in 2006. With that said I want to support you guys as much as I can. Let me be very clear that it is not our intention to snuff the GPL Free Nexuiz out in any way.

IllFonic was started 2 years ago by myself, Charles Brungardt (President) and Raphael Saadiq. When we first started our studio, we focused on making a game called 'Ghetto Golf'. This game is still in production, using Unreal Engine 3 as its backbone. Our team includes many Quake based developers - including Paul 'Echon' Jackson as our Lead Programmer (Author EGL Quake 2 engine and admin of Quakedev.net), Forest 'LordHavoc' Hale (Author DarkPlaces and huge contributor to GPL Nexuiz), Chris Holden as our Lead Artist, who started his professional career working on the Quake 2 Extremities mission pack. After playing Nexuiz, seeing it grow, I saw this project as being a great milestone for us to open our publishing arm to independent projects. Nexuiz has achieved a lot of great things, which you guys should be very proud of. This is the next chapter in the achievements you guys have accomplished.

Let's be very clear on some specific bullet points.

- We've worked out the deals with Alien Trap and Dark Places for our version of Nexuiz. All parties are very supportive and eager to get behind bringing this to the console. I'm not the person to talk to about Legal stuff but we are definitely working together.

- Think of this Nexuiz as a 100% separate entity from the Nexuiz you guys know and love. The game play in our version of Nexuiz is very similar. However, in order to properly port it over to consoles we've tweaked a few things here and there - we want to make sure this is a different project (yet still similar) out of respect for your version of Nexuiz. There are no plans at this time to make content we make, including source code, open to the public. Please keep in mind we are spending a lot of money on this project, my team and I have been slaving away on this for the past 2 months - working 12+ hours 7 days a week in order to get it to where it is. We are very passionate about this project as well.

- I know this will come as a shock to some of you. I apologize for us having to keep this in the dark from you guys for so long. Some of you felt offended by this project being kept in the dark. Let me personally say this was not our intent. If anything, we want you guys to feel great about the things we are doing. We had to keep things in the dark until we locked in the rights from Dark Places and Alien Trap.

Here are some perks for you guys with what this project will bring.

- We are using a Licensed version of Dark Places. With that, a lot of the tweaks LordHavoc is doing will be brought to you guys in the engine. These include a lot of performance boosts, features, etc. Although right now the focus is getting this project running and looking great on consoles, there are a lot of things he will be able to trickle down into the GPL version of Nexuiz. Please note: not everything will be brought over but some will.

- We will be talking about the community and game you've developed over the years to Press and within our marketing material. It is even mentioned on the new web-site, which will be growing over time. We have this web-site as Nexuiz.com because we are launching a commercial product. Please keep in mind there will be a lot of new players, press and more coming to this web-site for information about our version of Nexuiz. The GPL Nexuiz is still linked on this web-site. This is necessary for the commercial marketing of the project. Our projections show you guys will actually get more players in the GPL version of Nexuiz through all of this than not. I know it feels like you guys are in danger of losing your community, but I trust you will see you are not. In time, I believe firmly you will see the benefits from this.

- AlienTrap is not empty handed in our deal. As much as I'd love to recommend things, it is not my place to suggest what you guys do with your version of GPL Nexuiz or AlienTrap. Concerns such as those should be directed at AlienTrap and not IllFonic.

Ok, let's get into what exactly this project is...

The Name: We decided to keep the name 'Nexuiz' for this release because the audience coming to the console version of Nexuiz will mostly be new to the game. There is a great divide amongst the new FPS Console crowd born out of the explosion of recent mega-hit FPS games on consoles. I can't mention here other mods and independent games turned into commercial games, but I'm sure some of you guys could name quiet a few. In my MOD days, it was always a dream to get your work picked up by a studio and turned into a commercial game. I know it's not like that for all of you. Some of you pride yourself on your work and proving that an independent scene can still exist. Our version of Nexuiz is targeting console players only right now. I cannot go into specifics about my speculations, but a lot of great things are possible for you guys out of this.

Console: Some press reported we are targetting the Wii. This is not true. There is no way this game could be played on a Wii without drastically changing the game.... We have no plans for a Wii release at this time. With thumbstick play, what makes Nexuiz great can be lost. (I cannot discuss what consoles right now) Nexuiz is very fast paced, and if you play GPL Nexuiz right now on PC with thumb sticks - you will be dominated most of the time. There are no plans for Console Players and PC Players to be playing against each other at this time. No Mouse and Keyboard support will be available on the Console. . We want to capture that twitch game play still. Nexuiz is one of the fastest Arena FPS games out there. We want to make sure that vision is transferred over to Console game play. But, with that some things need to be adjusted. With console games, some players expect certain things and we have to adapt to those needs. While Nexuiz is a PC arena game These changes will be announced soon.

Artistic Revamp: The art in the new version of Nexuiz is done by a small team.We are 3 programmers, 1 Artist, 1 Animator and 1 Designer right now (Full-time In house) and have a motion capture animation system. Our characters/weapons are modeled by Art Bully Productions (http://www.artbullyproductions.com). Keep in mind our team is extremely small. What you're seeing is the work from this team, and the hired backing of Art Bully Productions and a few freelancers in 2 months. I am very proud of our team and what we've pulled off here for the alpha test. And yes, this is running on a console. We made the content a more Victorian elegant Sci-Fi style. More information and content will be revealed over the course of development.

What's Next:

This is clearly a post directed at you guys specifically. I cannot reveal too much about the game right now other than what has been released. I wanted to let you guys know that we do listen to you. We are not some big corporate mega company coming in who can't understand where you are coming from.

GDC 2010

This announcement was intended for our build up to GDC this month. At GDC, we have a booth on the floor, here we will be showing press the game and doing a full announcement of the project. Lee Vermeulen and Forest Hale will both be with us during our Press, party and more at GDC. We are very excited to reveal this project to the public and get their hands on the alpha test we have to offer.

In the screenshots, you are seeing 2 character models of the 2 Factions in Nexuiz. The level they are playing on is 'Strength' with a new face lift and slight design modifications. The weapons you can see in the screen shots are the Machine Gun, Hagar, Nex, HLAC and Shotgun. There are a lot more things in production, but this is where we are so far.

I am sorry I cannot go into legal matters about our situation. I hope you guys enjoy the version of Nexuiz we are creating. We will be announcing more information soon, as well as putting our official IllFonic site back up soon.

I'd like to invite you guys to follow us on Twitter and Facebook (look up IllFonic). Also, you can add me personally on myspace via http://www.myspace.com/kedhrin where i post updates as they come from press, events, etc.

I will try to check back on this forum periodically. I am still very busy but wanted to take the time to introduce myself, IllFonic and what we're doing. I expect there to be a tidal wave of questions asked when I post this. So please don't be offended if I'm not able to get to them all and not in a timely manner. We're still crunching for GDC, we want to make sure this looks as great as it can and we bring as many players to Nexuiz as we can.

Thanks,

Kedhrin

Problem is more people thought they were considered part of Alientrap when really this deal sounds more like you made it with two people and the rest of "Alientrap" feels upset because this name we've all help build has now been given away.

Re: IllFonic's Nexuiz

I am sorry you see it that way. I knew the community of Nexuiz was many people, contributing from many angles. Naturally, we approached the owner of Alien Trap as well as the Creator of Nexuiz, Lee about this and what we wanted to do. From a Publisher and Co-Developer standpoint, this is the best path to take. Regardless of that, what is done is done - this is a reality. I want to hear your opinions about what we are doing - rather than hold off on what has been done. Let's move forward together and not against each other. I do not want you guys to feel like I am your enemy, because I am not. Regardless of GPL Nexuiz is this, our Nexuiz is that - a new Nexuiz is about to be unleashed onto console gamers. Together, we can make sure it is a success. We are doing some really amazing things here, and we want you guys to be the first to know, updated and see what is going on.

Is there any chance that some artwork/code could be opensourced, maybe something like how id has done (release, after a while opensource the code) ?

Re: IllFonic's Nexuiz

Right now releasing things to the public is uncertain. There are a lot of things related to the SDK's for the consoles, etc. that do not allow for GPL usage. You have to keep in mind the content we are creating is a lot different than the content made for GPL Nexuiz. I know you guys would love to see it there. I just cannot give you a definitive answer on this right now.

Hello, and welcome to the forum!

Thank you very much for your post, it was very needed to answer some serious questions we had. I've made your post sticky, also, an announce. Reading your post, and realising you're a member of good old quake community makes things easier at least for me to believe. Also, weren't you around in Nexuiz in 1.x times? Nickname sounds familiar.

Anyay, thx for the post. But don't get me wrong, I still feel offended, though I'm not a developer, just an "oldie" member. While it won't make your post less important, we wanted to hear things from Vermeulen in an official post, not from you. I hope you understand this.

You are already starting to call Nexuiz "GPL Nexuiz" and to call Console Nexuiz "Nexuiz". Everything is fine except for this hijacking of the name. That's really really low.. You should have known that beforehand imho. And most of all Lee should have known that beforehand. The least bit of experience with the open source development process should have told you guys that this was not a wise move. Actually i even think it's not a wise move from an economical point of view. Even ID know well enough to give a new product a new name (or at least a variation of a previous one)..

"Let's move forward together" and "We don't plan on contributing back to Nexuiz" [paraphrased - too lazy to look up the exact words] are kinda orthogonal, too, don't you think?

I support the other aspects of your effort. I'm not a console guy myself, thus i don't plan on playing Console Nexuiz. But it's cool that you want to bring the nice action packed gameplay to the console players..

a small button at the bottom of the page! maybe now someone will click it, but if there is more content who will even find the button? just calculating with numbers doesnt assure a bigger community. It also will be a big impact for free gaming.

Re: IllFonic's Nexuiz

I'm quite sure that when the knee-jerk reactions have subsided a bit, it will be easier to have a calm-ish discussion about this. I assuem both IllFonic and Lee expected a little recoil like the one we are currently seeing.

I understand the reactions, but I also understand the viewpoint and agruments from IllFonic.

This will be a huge insentive for both Forest and Lee to work more on the project, and though they of cource will focus on the commercial side for some time, I find no reason not to think they would want to include whatever they can in the open version of the engine and game as well, and this will be an advantage for the game as we know it. It is a rare thing that a talented programmer gets a commercial job, but is sill able to work on the project that brough him there, and if this is possible in this case, this will be an advantage for the open engine as well.

As to content, as I've tried repeatedly to explain to you all, content cannot be GPLed, as GPL is a source-code spesific license, as for the source code and engine, it is allready GPL so anyone may work on it as they want, but I see no reason to alienate people that has done so much work as The alientrap core and Forest.

Its fair to say that a lot of the community has been very good at sitting on their asses asking for things to be done, and if the poeple that has actually done the work find themselves in a position where they can get payed to continue working on the same project, and at the same time what they are working on will benefit the project as well, I say its good.

Of cource.. commercialising and closing makes a loss of control, but still, the current GPL version is up for grabs by anyone to continue working on, and if noone is willing or able to work on it, I'd say its a bit hyppocritical to bash on those who do work on it. no matter what happens, the open game cannot become any less good than it currently is, and knowing that _more_ work is put into it, rather than less, is a good thing, no?

I also think that it it is in IllFonic best interest that a project that shares the name is as good as possible, and frankly, the name Nexuiz isnt worth that much marketing-wise, so I'll take it at face value when they claim they kept the name out of respect for the project. (but i do expect a ("developed since 2000", or wahtever in the marketing texts)
the spice extend life!
the spice expand conciousness!
the spice is vital to space travel!
sooooo.. tell me what you want, waht you really-really want
I will proceed directly to the intravenous injection of hard drugs, please.

Re: IllFonic's Nexuiz

First: I am not the most active member in the community but I play the game pretty often (mostly Offline against bots I admit). So maybe I should not say too much now but I want to get rid of some thoughts.

I also must say I think it's a good thing Nexuiz will get a biger platform and I am sure it's an encrichment for those involved. Big Congratulations for those.
I think I can also agree with most of what tChr said. And I can understand what Kedhrin said.

Still:
I guess the biggest issue is what simply is shown when the wwebsite nexuiz.com is showed up:
You see the annoucement of the console version - bumping it. The "GPL Nexuiz" link is somewhere below that, small, seemingly "unimportant". And I guess this is a good anology on how people feel just right now: Unimportant, left aside.
I really do not know what the developers went though in the last years but I see we have a dedicated community who loves the game.

@Kedhrin + tChr:
I can fuilly understand your sides. And I hope this all will be sorted out and both projects will be able to profit somehow. But coming back to what I've written above I can also understand the declining reaction of others.
Plus I think the naming is just not... perfect. Nexuiz, GPL Nexuiz - I guess many *new* gamers will jus tnot see different projects here. Not with the current site, not with *this* naming-convention. But they will see the console version.
Again, another point why the current players might feel left out of the whole process.

Dunno if I am right, dunno if I am wrong...
Thing is: When I visited the page last night my first thought was: "Oh, GPL Nexuiz is dead, it will be succeeded/replaced by the console version."
Simply put: THIS IS A GPL VIOLATION. SOMEONE WILL SUE YOU.
It is not.

They licensed the engine from both ID software and Lord Havoc and crew so they could use it w/o the GPL.
They licensed the maps and textures they wanted from the authors (to what I've heard) so they could use it w/o the GPL.

They didn't license nor the quake C game code I assume and are making their own game code (I assume).

Hopefully Div0 and TZork will be payed some money for continuing development on Nexuiz:GPL (or whatever it is to be called).

Another good thing might be that LH and Vermillion will get to help direct the console port to how they want it to be, while the Nexuiz:Whatever gets to be how the main devs of it want it to be (Div0 etc).

Re: IllFonic's Nexuiz

MirceaKitsune made an interesting post. Doing this would be a good start in lessening the negative impact among current Nexuiz players. I also think that the console Nexuiz should either take place in a different time period or in a different part of this game's universe to explain the different art styles found in each version. If the current Nexuiz were displayed in a better way on the console Nexuiz page, it would give gamers an idea of what to expect in a console version and maybe draw them into buying it. Especially if the console version is supposed to explain how everything began, I really think that would draw some of the PC crowd into at least giving it a chance.

Re: IllFonic's Nexuiz

Sounds like an interesting project but Its a shame you guys are using the PC Nexuiz name
when you mention its a different game , different game in my view warrants a different name.

Its a shame that you guys don't support Keyboard and Mouse in a FPS on a console.
Its amazing how many players would play FPS on a console (and even get a console)
if it supported native USB keyboard and mice on Xbox360/PS3/whatever.

Personality using the joypad for FPS (and RTS) reduces the decent game play
and I cant see a Fast Action game like Nexuiz being propely reproduced without
keyboard and mouse support , thus ruining the name of PC Nexuiz .

Ive got Two Xbox360's , one PS2 , on PS1 and two gaming PC's.

I wish console games had keyboard and mouse support and cross platform play (Console + PC)

I mainly use consoles for games that arent on PC , I don't buy any game on console that's an
FPS or RTS , so I stick to fighting/racing/sports games.

Re: IllFonic's Nexuiz

If its a different game why you use Nexuiz as name?? Stealing the name is so lame! I guess its easier to promote , because Nexuiz is quite popular.

http://www.illfonic.com/

only a logo, what the hell?

Just use another name and i think almost everyone is fine with it.
Nexuiz is for me oldschool gaming with friends and not a console thing that does not look "Nexuizish" (what you can tell from the screens).

Money rules the world.Thats just the way things are , thats just the way it is now.

Re: IllFonic's Nexuiz

1. Good luck to LH and Verm with their enterprise. Nexuiz is a very nice work, I imagine you are proud of it, and I completely understand how you want to work on it full time.
2. The name issue is daunting and offending. Worse, it hints us that you do NOT value the community's interests and are willing to go blatantly against them. How hard is it to invent a suffix to use in the commercial product, as in Nexuiz:XYZ.
3. Despite being a long-time player (a couple of years), I'm little known in the community, so I don't want to push my opinion hard. But, given unfriendly attitude from the new maintainers, I think we, as a community, should take a stand and demand/negotiate separation of the free/libre software project into its own entity with community-elected governance and full control over the source code and content (i.e. control over the source code repositories, development and release process and the website). This development shouldn't harm the new maintainer and would give the community confidence in the project's future. As in many similar situations, the commercial company can have a representation in the governance.

We certainly have both the right and the power to demand such a change.

I don't like the thought of people coming from console Nexuiz to the console Nexuiz website, seeing the link to Real Nexuiz, trying it out and then saying "Wutt - this is not like Nexuiz at all.".

Why not using a derivative name like Nexuiz <whatever> and having a portal kind of site on nexuiz.com?

Much like Unreal.com links to Unreal, UT99, UT2k3, Unreal 2, UT2k4, UC1, and UC2: The Liandri Conflict.

Re: IllFonic's Nexuiz

Either you modify the name of your project. Or we do, and you contribute some of your work as compensation for the obvious disadvantages of a name change. It should be set in the same timeline, just different period.

Naming should be similar to
Herritic & Hexen

Therefore we get something like:
Nexuiz & Nexus
Nexuiz & Neurosis

some logos may include:
In the theme of big cooperations
http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k208/ ... doalds.png
And more seriously
Chinese symbol for honor
http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k208/ ... _honor.png
Chinese symbol for eternity
http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k208/ ... ernity.png
or other symbols like ninja or war

I quite like the name Neurosis for Nexuiz. You never know...
All in all I hope you haven't deterred developers from the game so many people have put so much work into!!

Yes, i do fully agree. Maybe something like "Nexuiz: The galactic wars" or something that reflects the story

Yes, I think that may sort out some of the confusion. Or an other cool tagline by illfonic :)
Otherwise both project may suffer... I don't want that.

At present we have no plans to change the Nexuiz name or distribute our content to the GPL Nexuiz.

Please keep in mind that when the game comes out on consoles it will be listed as, for example, Nexuiz (PS3). There are many games out there that have a counter-part that is completely different than the other. For example, Counter-Strike when it was on the X-Box. Similar mechanics were used, but it was brand new content, setting, etc. I'd love to keep talking about this issue but I just don't feel it will get anywhere. I understand why you are upset about it. We did not steal this name or use it without permission. This is part of our agreement with AlienTrap. I'm sorry, but I have no further comments about this right now.

The press is aware of these games being different. They are doing a great job at keeping them separate while still plugging the GPL Nexuiz. We are constantly talking about it to people about GPL Nexuiz as well.

For example, new press today shows this -> http://www.strategyinformer.com/news/71 ... -this-year

Our web-site is being revamped currently to support Nexuiz information as well as new information on our other project, Ghetto Golf.

Charliebrownau wrote:Its a shame that you guys don't support Keyboard and Mouse in a FPS on a console.
Its amazing how many players would play FPS on a console (and even get a console)
if it supported native USB keyboard and mice on Xbox360/PS3/whatever.

I agree playing on a Mouse and Keyboard definitely puts your skill level higher than if you were to play with just thumb sticks. Epic Games tried this with Unreal Tournament 3 on the Playstation 3. Currently you can play it on the PS3 with a mouse and keyboard. The problem lies when you start playing against other players. You have to create a filter to play/not to play against people with mouse and keyboard. This can really thin out your player base. The version of Nexuiz we have planned will include a very detailed character profile system tied directly into the players profiles. Leaderboards tied directly into social networking sites and more are planned. With this delicate and balanced over-arcing game design we are putting onto the project, separating the player base could be very bad. We will see how things change, but as of now I have no plans to implement mouse+keyboard support into the design.

Zico wrote:I guess the biggest issue is what simply is shown when the wwebsite nexuiz.com is showed up:
You see the annoucement of the console version - bumping it. The "GPL Nexuiz" link is somewhere below that, small, seemingly "unimportant". And I guess this is a good anology on how people feel just right now: Unimportant, left aside.
I really do not know what the developers went though in the last years but I see we have a dedicated community who loves the game.

The web-site we put up at Nexuiz.com is an announcement in preparation for GDC 2010. We will start growing the web-site. Right now, it is serving as a teaser. Things will change with the web-site. Right now I cannot give you a definitive answer as to how it will change. However, we will always have a link to GPL Nexuiz on the Nexuiz.com web-site.

C.Brutail wrote:Also, weren't you around in Nexuiz in 1.x times? Nickname sounds familiar.

I don't remember when I first started coming around Nexuiz. It was before 2.0 was out though. When I was working on Quake 10 Year in 2006, I was more involved with anything dealing with DarkPlaces.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I would really like to hear any more feedback/ideas you have for console play.

Could we get a list of tags of the people who had their content put in the game to insure that nobody got ripped off?

There is a stats page for the SVN showing who contributed what to the GPL Nexuiz, even though that doesn't show what parts they will be using.
