We Have to End Starvation!

        Contrary to common belief, hunger does not result from lack of food, but from some disruption in a particular people's food distribution, usually resulting from poverty, military conflict, or the denial of food to people as a weapon of denial during war or as political pressure against a given group. There is enough food available in the world to provide over four pounds of food to every person every day. Most cases of 'chronic' malnutrition result from problems in the distribution of a nation's wealth and resources.
        Jesus addressed the problem of hunger in his age and made it a central part of his teachings and miracles. The most famous of these miracles is known as miracle of fish and loaves: "And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes. He said, Bring them hither to me. And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full. And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children." (Matthew 14: 15-21)
        Perhaps the most important emphasis Jesus placed on hunger is the final commission he gave to Peter, the Apostle he proclaimed as the foundation of his church. In a effort to strongly emphasize his point he repeated this edict to Peter three times: "This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead. So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep." (John 21:14-17)
        There can be no doubt that the greatest failing of our modern world is its inability to feed its hungry. Considering the reality that hunger is not caused by lack of food but the distribution of food it becomes even more of a crime against humanity. This, alone, condemns humanity as unable to properly control its own affairs.
The following facts give light to that concept:

·  Every other second a human dies needlessly on this planet and 85% of them are children 5 years of age or younger Malnutrition is associated with over half of the deaths of children who die daily from preventable and treatable causes for a total of 6 million children each year, 16,000 children a day, or one child starving every five seconds.
·  More than 850 million people in the world are malnourished and over 770 million of them are from the developing world. 170 million of them are children.
·  In the last half-century, over 400 million people worldwide have died from starvation and unsanitary living conditions, which is triple the number of people killed in all wars fought in the entire 20th century.
·  Only a small percentage of hunger deaths are caused by starvation. Most hunger-related deaths are the result of chronic under-nutrition, which weakens the body's ability to ward off diseases.
·  When people actually starve to death; where virtually no food is available, the cause is primarily political, not weather-related.
·  In the United States, 38.2 million people, including 14 million children, or one in ten of all households in the U.S. are living with hunger or are at risk of hunger.
·  The U.S. Conference of Mayors reports that in 2005 requests for emergency food assistance increased an average of 12 percent. 54 percent of those requesting emergency food assistance were members of families with children and 40 percent of adults requesting such assistance were employed. Over half the cities surveyed said they are not able to provide an adequate quantity of food to those in need. 83 percent of surveyed cities reported they had to decrease the quantity of food provided and/or the number of times people can come to get food assistance, up from 67 percent from 2004. An average of 18 percent of the demand for emergency food assistance is estimated to have gone unmet in the survey cities.
