Santo Domingo.- The Middle East is again the focus of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (FUNGLODE) with the panel discussion “Negotiations between Israel and Palestine: initial analysis” slated for Monday as follow-up to the process recently reinitiated between both parts and the latest events related to the conflict in that region.

FUNGLODE’s auditorium will be the site of the activity open to the public and which continues the Global Foundation’s Forum for Peace held in the eastern Dominican Republic resort Punta Cana from July 23 to 25, when the agents and specialists in the conflict participated, concluding with the Declaration of Punta Cana.

FUNGLODE honorary president and President of the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernandez will head the panel, with Professor Shibley Telhami as moderator.

Also as panelists will be Israel interim Ambassador in Dominican Republic Yair Recanati,; Palestine Ambassador in Dominican Republic Riyadh H. Mansour; Jordan Ambassador before the United Nations Prince Zeid Ra'ad Zeid Al-Hussein; France Ambassador in Dominican Republic Roland Dubertrand,; and a representative  of the United States Embassy in the country, said FUNGLODE in a statement.

“We live in the globalization era and any event that occurs anywhere in the world affects us, especially if it occurs in the Middle East. Peace or war in that zone affects the world and therefore, our country,” Fernandez said in the Forum held in Punta Cana.

Leave the Jews and the Palestinians alone! This peace process talk has been going on for generations and neither side is able to compromise. Let them continue to go at it and maybe when there is few left on both sides they will come to an understanding.

Aren't there similarities in the Haiti/RD vs Israel/Palestine (Gaza strip)??

Wouldn't Leonel's suggestion be "let them all in"??

Preach what you practice?

The President is absolutely right to be involved in seeking peace in the Middle East. As a new resident of Santo Domingo, I do find it interesting that the main focus is not on supporting and standing up for Israel since I am told that the D.R. is 95% Roman Catholic. According to the Holy Bible, Israel belongs to God's chosen people the Jews and as the Bible clearly states "I will bless those who bless Israel, and curse those who come against her". We need to be standing up for Israel.

Leonel likes the world stage, big flashy events. When he began in 97 he was focused on the problems in the country but then he began to travel and said eff that. Now he is too drugged up to care about anything. This cat is doing some hard core crack. HE HAS TO BE ON SOMETHING! He ain't that old but he is so stiff and phucked up. What gives son, what gives???????

The conflict in the ME is a political quagmire, and the DR has no business meddling outward, trying to middle this eternal pond of quicksand.
The only three words I can use to accurately describe this headline is WTF is LF thinking?
Honey child, in DR we got enough problems of our own, let's try to solve one major one, like the illegal Haitian immigration, for example.

@ Nancy Borrel

Very interesting you would used the Holy book to justify what Israel have done to the Palestinian People (Ariel Sharon's actions in the refugees camp of Lebanon the Shatila massacre, The used of white phospharus gas against a civilian population during their last 22days incursion into Gaza which was declare a war crime by the UN, operation Cast Lead). The British fought for 40 years a similar conflict in Northern Ireland, but never dreamed of using such weapon in their fight against the IRA( a gas once inhale you can not exhale which essentially cook your lungs).Let alone on a civilian population.Than again it was your kind who justified the slaving of my forefathers by your ancestors for your favor passage out of that good book was to remind us Africans during Sunday's services "The bible say obey your master".

Please do the world a favor lube that good book of yours really well, I do not have to tell you the rest for you know what to do with it.

nancyborrell, by your insistence that we stand up for Israel, i guess you are suggesting that the DR government should take a pro Israel stance in this matter. i suggest that you take that speech somewhere else. nobody likes the situation in the Middle East, but it is reckless and self serving of you to ask a country to take sides in this very cantankerous issue, and open up itself to recriminations from the other side. i do not want my ass blown up by some loonie, while i sit on the Conde sipping a beer, because some person called nancyborrell wants the DR government to stand up for Israel. we have some people, right here in the DR, that need standing up for, thank you.

heavy duty stuff, as usual, from PatDiamond. the very nerve of this nancyborrell individual! i am still trying to digest this! i mean, i would like her to tell me in which way is Israel standing up for some poor folks from Los Mina. i just remember them as the country that sold the cattle prods to the South African government to torture black people, and as the ONLY government that backed the USA when that country vetoed anti aparheid initiatives against SOUTH AFRICA in the UN. take a hike!

The nerve of that Nancy Borrell!

First, trying to feed the feud using fallacies like "the D.R. is 95% Roman Catholic. According to the Holy Bible, Israel belongs to God's chosen people the Jews".

So, like the Catholics should be Zionist??????

She(?) must be either a Buddhist or an illiterate, wilfully assimilating the Catholics to the Jews because both confessions share the Old testament.

Or, as you put it, a Mossad sleeper trying to identify Zion's enemies.

Like, on top of it all, we needed that cr,,p.

Maybe LF is doing what he is told to do by USA and get them to negotiate ,which am all for it .Also
people you must understand in order for LF to be famous worldwide is to do things of this magnitide and attract friends not foes . He has proven to be a good diplomat in the Venezuelan-Colombian conflict, again in the Haiti's earthquake besides he is a close friend of OBAMA and who knows might break the ties between the USA and Cuba .Good commerce derives from all these international politics. You have to see beyond your noses.

I don't agree with the previous statement made by NANCY BORRELL seems to me she is importing ZIONISM in a country that has palestinian sympathisers for generations specially
Dominican-Turkos (LEBANESES) .. What is wrong with her ,Is she an Israel agent ?

Genesis 12:3 the Lord says"I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."
God makes it very clear that we are to stand up for Israel, he gave that land to his chosen people the Jews.
I am simply stating what the Bible says and I happen to believe in the Bible and I am a follower of Jesus Christ.
Whoever doesn't believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God then, will of course disagree.
So, according to what the Bible says, LF is acting correctly on behalf of his country in regards to the Middle East and Israel.

talking about disagreement! if i read you correctly, you invoke the words of the Bible as the reason why we should support Israel. so, what if i am a believer in the words of a different religious text? maybe i am a Buddhist, perhaps. or, Confucian. why should the government of the DR embroil itself in some religious feud, between two intractible foes, which has lasted for generations? what is Israel doing to ease tensions between the DR and Haiti? we have our problems here, and there is no reason to insinuate ourselves in someone else's fight, because nancyborrel believes that we should occupy some Old Testament positions as the basis of our foreign policy in 2010. sorry , nancy, but home comes first. when Haitians and Dominicans have resolved their cantankerous issues, we will look at yours. i am a believer in the Clean Hands Doctrine, and i find it difficult to support a country that helped apartheid flourish in South Africa. what does the Bible say about that?

i read it. maybe, the people who promoted apartheid either did not, or, they read it and did not find that part worthwhile.

I'm not going to waste time looking it up, but there is definitely something in the Bible about slaves having to obey their master.

It probably is the basis for Israel supporting apartheid back in the day.
