Anti-Defamation League Director Abe Foxman: Beck's Soros smear is "totally off limits and over the top."

November 11, 2010 11:31 am ET by Media Matters staff

Glenn Beck's two-part attack on George Soros has been steeped in anti-semitic imagery and stereotypes. But smearing Soros on his radio show, Beck went so far as to suggest that Soros helped "send the Jews" to "death camps" during the Holocaust.

In a November 11 Jewish Week article, prominent Jewish leaders and Holocaust survivors condemned Beck's use of the Holocaust to attack Soros:

The ADL's Abe Foxman is also a child survivor who lived only because his parents turned him over to his Catholic nanny.

"Look, I spit on Jews when I was six years old," Foxman told me. "Does that make me an anti-Semite?"

The issue of the Shoah "is so sensitive that I'm not even sure Holocaust survivors themselves are willing to make such judgments," Foxman went on "For a political commentator or entertainer to have the audacity to say, there's a Jewish boy sending Jews to death camps, that's horrific. It's totally off limits and over the top."

Beck's comments "were either out of total ignorance or total insensitivity," he said.

Elan Steinberg, vice president of the The American Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Their Descendants, called the Beck accusations "monstrous; you don't make such accusations without proof, and I have seen no such proof."

Beck's charges, he said, "go to the heart of the instrumentalization and trivialization of the Holocaust."

Simon Greer, president of the Jewish Funds for Justice, met with Fox News executives in July to discuss Beck's "constant and often inappropriate invocation of the Holocaust and Nazi Germany on the air."

Greer and Rabbi Steve Gutow of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA) received a handwritten note from Beck saying "Please know that I understand the sensitivity and sacred nature of this dark chapter in Human History. Thank you for your candor and helpful thoughts."

Yesterday's on-air comments by Beck "made a mockery of their professed understanding," Greer said in a statement. "In an effort to demonize a political opponent, Beck and Fox News scurrilously attacked George Soros, a prominent Jewish philanthropist and Holocaust survivor. No one who truly understands 'the sensitivity and sacred nature' of the Holocaust would deliberately and grotesquely mis-characterize the experience of a 13 year old Jew in Nazi-occupied Hungary whose father hid him with a non-Jewish family to keep him alive."

Interfaith Alliance President Rev. Dr. C. Welton Gaddy said Beck's "use of the Holocaust to discredit George Soros is beyond repugnant. The Holocaust is one of history's most tragic events and those who survived it are owed our enduring respect."

Abe Foxman, who was quoted above criticizing Beck, gave Rupert Murdoch an award last month for "speaking out against anti-Semitism."

        That award MUST be revoked.

Click the link for more on the award and Murdoch's affirmation of Beck's hate speech. I have also provided links to contact the ADL and express your opinion of paying tribute to Murdoch and the hate speech he promotes.

Assuming you mean "you" in a collective way, are you not trying to lump a large group of people together into little box?

          Isn't that what racists do?

I'll bet you've always been confused about what others believe.

Evil is evil. Rich is rich. If a person does evil things, it does not matter whether they owe $1T or HAVE $1T, they still did evil things. The issue is that I don't see the world as black and white, or even just shades of grey, but rather all of the shades of visible light. Another way to look at it is that while computers operate on binary, people do not - and why should my political thought be any different? I don't agree with the politics of Chuck Norris, but I will still watch movies of his that I enjoy. I don't agree with the politics of former Gov. Palin, but I won't hold that against TLC or the state of Alaska.

Glenn Beck is about to come to a very important fork in his road. Does he admit that he crossed the line, show some humility, and back down, or does he dig in, become even more obstinate, and refuse to acknowledge that his words have any negative impact?

It's become clear lately that he has 2 masters: the pre-existing radio, and Fox. Seems likely radioBeck will not change. Perhaps FoxBeck will tone down. Probably depends on feedback from listeners/viewers. Given the conspiratorial bent of some of them there's probably already some, "Soros got to Foxman!"

ADL will be linked with ACORN, which will be linked to child prostitution, which will be linked to Interpol, which will be linked to Germany, which will be linked to the Holocaust.

I disagree. There is no fork. There is no walking back entire episodes of his show devoited to smearing Soros, and belittling the holocaust. Seriously, how would one walk back what Glenn Beck has said without admitting to being a total fraud? He ha doubled down on his 'theories' dozens of times. There is no walking his statements back. Period. I, for one, wouldn't allow such duplicity to simply happen. No he's going to wear his antisemitism, and bigotry around his neck until it hangs him.

I agree. Beck is a sociopath . . . he is NEVER wrong and anyone who says that he is becomes his enemy. The way Beck deals with his "enemies" is character assassination and out and out lies. Beck will go after the ADL, the Jewish magazine and anyone who expressed an opinion in the article. It's what Beck does. The problem is that Beck's "enemies" are getting more and more mainstream and powerful. As I said, he might have finally ripped his britches on this one.

You're probably right. However, I would argue that it's typical of hucksters like Beck to have some sort of epiphany on air so all his followers can be witnesses.

The saddest commentary of this is that there is nothing we don't think him capable of doing as long as it furthers his own agenda.

We need to send it out on our facebooks, etc.

The only way he is going to be stopped is if we continue to add our voices of outrage to his sponsors and to his management. We saw it work with Keith Olbermann, we CAN effect change, together.

Respect, reverence, ethics, empathy...these are foreign concepts to Glenn Beck.

I have a feeling that if Glenn Beck were 14 years old in 1937 Austria, he'd be standing outside the railcars poking people with sticks and mocking their pleas for their lives.

I love poking fun of him just as much as anyone, but this person is a vile human being. I wonder if he ever stays awake at night pondering the repercussions of his words? I wonder if he ever once thinks to himself, "You know, 13 million people were wiped off the face of the earth in one of history's most darkest moments. Maybe I shouldn't be so flippant about it."

      I doubt it.

I had the interesting experience recently of challenging anti-Soros rhetoric on one of the Breitbart sites. Most of my statements supporting the notion that Soros was being unfairly vilified were met with scorn and ridicule. What was curious however, was when I specifically suggested that criticizing Soros for his actions as a 13-year old in Nazi occupied Hungary were so insensitive as to constitute anti-Semitism, nobody, but nobody, took the bait. They steered well clear of this one point of contention, as if it were radioactive. Beck may well find himself on extremely tenuous ground on this one. Happy Thanksgiving Glenn!

GoldLine's business model requires that its customers be easily swayed by fear and misinformation. That is the only way they can sell such horrible investments. In that way, they probably love this type of thing from Glenn, because the people who listen to and believe it are low hanging fruit.

On a seperate note, have any of Glenn's fanboys ever invested in Goldline coins, and if so, how is that working out for you?

If you bought gold coins from Goldline, Beck's sponsor, you would have paid about $800/ounce for that gold, not $600/ounce. Of course, you could have sold it back to them the next day for $600/ounce.

If that isn't a scam, nothing is.

And, if Beck's lunatic, Apocalyptic predictions ever came true, your gold would be worthless. Gold has no intrinsic value. If the world "collapses" as Beck keeps saying (in order to get idiots like you to buy his sponsor's products), food, water and fuel will be worth MUCH, MUCH more than gold. Nobody is going to give you food for gold. Gold is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Ever wonder why all of the ancient buildings were decorated with so much gold? Because it's strong (albeit very soft) and it's pretty. If it had been worth anything, they wouldn't have used it.

Its currently occupied by the islamic temple, which would have to bedestroyed to make room for the jewish one and the return of jesus. This is also why they're at war with islam: cant rebuild while they own the land.

Fiction is more popular than non-fiction. Also, if you're going to try to make a point like that, look at Glenn Beck's twitter followers compared to Keith Olbermann's or Rachel Maddow. That at least hints at a demographic of younger people leaning towards MSNBC's hosts. Beck is on at 5 because that's just before the elderly go to bed. Any later, his ratings would drop significantly.

And more people vote on American Idol than voted for President.

Glenn learned following the "Obama is a racist" moment that his ratings depend on throwing rhetorical firebombs. So he's encouraged to ratchet it up as much as possible, hence this multi-part slander fest.

However, his ratings are empty calories, given how many advertisers have walked away from him. Fox knows this, and may eventually pull the plug if they can't sell ad time.

Ratings = lies. Fox only shows its stuff on TV. You cant find the videos online. As a result, their audience is captive and never changes the channel. Rachel gets almost as many viewers as Beck and this is while there are numerous sources for leftwing commentary. Your lie fails to take into account that many on the left have abandoned crappy, overpriced television for full internet media, which is not possible with fox. Its almost definite that our numbers total higher than yours. We just dont watch drivel on television.

However, there is only so much juice you can siphon into your Frankenstein monster before it takes on a life of it's own, and I hope Murdoch and Ailes can see this and exercise some restraint over their on-air talent before things get even farther out of hand.

You can't make a baseless allegation (like pretty much everything Beck says) and then claim victory unless the other side disproves it.

I was wondering when this garbage talking point would re-surface. It happened right on time!

This actually comes from the old-school of right wing rhetoric. The notion that unless you show absolute unequivocal support for the state of Israel's policy down to the smallest detail, you are an anti-semite.

Note that the concept has nothing to do with showing respect and tolerance to the actual people(American or abroad), their faith, and their traditions, the true measuring stick of whether or not a person is anti-any group.

Blaming the jews for the holocaust is one station before full blown holocaust denial on the train route of nazi apologism. We are going to have to face the fact that with the "TEA Party" ascendant America is facing for the first time the VERY real possibility a fascist takeover. The fact that these fascists have preemptively accused their supposed opposition of the same thing doesn't change that one bit. It's time for us to start talking openly about what this really is.

You know, the ADL brought this upon themselves by tolerating this garbage from the start. It is one of those boiling frog episodes. Abe Foxman was giving Rupert Murdoch awards for international leadership or some similar nonsense just recently.
They have plenty of opportunities over the past 5 years to use their organization to push back at the bigotry emanating from Fox, and they simply refused to do it.
I personally think it is because the leaders of the ADL are involved in personal and financial relationships with the Fox hate-mongers and their hard-core neoconservative enablers like John McCain.
When an organization is willing to sell out its' values to stay in the good graces of these clowns for whatever reason, you have to ask yourself what its values really are.

hate to burst your collective bubble but beck is a survivor with important people behind him. he's too important to them and their wealth to let him make his career take a turn in the wrong direction. he will sleaze by and all this will blow over.

he'll quietly and unceremoniously put the soros smear segments to rest and stay clear from any topic that might draw the ire of any thing jewish for the rest of his career. this was a close call but no cigar. he'll always have his arab, muslim and mexican piƱatas to let steam on

You're not bursting anyone's bubble. We know the game too. But in the end, his bubble WILL burst, because that kind of negativity isn't sustainable.

It eventually burns itself out; however, it usually takes a lot longer than we would wish.

GF, I wish I thought that Glenn's brand of hate and vitriol wasn't sustainable. But much like my younger sister's inability to smell cat pee in her home, since she's become inured to it, I'l afraid that the same thing has happened to a certain part of the population's moral metric. The stink gets ever stronger, and they have an inability to smell it.

well thanks for that pleasant vivid imagery. don't know what the half-life of cat pee is but if i'm correct it was what led to king tut's tomb discovery

Cat pee is just horrible to my olfactory sensors ;-) and it's an apt analogy, IMO.

I still am optimistic. Irony noted that Beck is pushing the old John Bircher talking points, and they were thoroughly discredited years ago.

Now they're emerging again, and will be discredited again. The pace of evolution on this planet is painfully slow, but inexorable.

Mary, thanks for giving me hope!

dsgspm, sorry about the vividness. But my sister is trying to sell her house and the fact of the unpleasnat smell had to be brought to my her attention, unfortunate as that may sound. She has 5 cats! Has always had a lot of cats. She even takes in ferals and is good at managing them. She's a very kind hearted person - with a superior brain. But much like an absent minded professor (she's actually a professor with a PhD from Harvard!), some things just don't make her radar...;-)
