DUELING ORIENTATIONS.... If Tea Party groups want to appear less hysterical in the eyes of lawmakers they hope to influence, they're off to a comically bad start.

Apparently, incoming freshmen to the U.S. House will begin their official orientation programs today. But before this initial round of meetings, there are competing "alternative" orientation programs, with some conservatives seeking to tell the incoming lawmakers what and how to think before they're "corrupted" by the establishment.

The Tea Party Patriots ... had announced just after the election that it was holding an orientation event for new members of Congress. But the Claremont Institute, a small conservative think tank in California, was hosting one at the same time. On Thursday, the group sent an e-mail to supporters, warning that the institute was trying to co-opt the freshmen.

"They are apparently trying to make sure that instead of sitting with grass-roots tea party leaders from around the country, the lobbyists and consultants can sink their claws into the freshmen, and begin to 'teach them' the ways of D.C.," said the letter, which was signed by organizers Jenny Beth Martin, Dawn Wilder, Mark Meckler and Debbie Dooley. Also included in the e-mail were the personal e-mails and cell phone numbers of many candidates who had won election to Congress -- and even a few who didn't.

The subject line of the email read, "Don't Let Them Steal OUR New Members of Congress."

Right on schedule, hundreds of enraged zealots began calling the representatives-elect, demanding they attend a conservative orientation program, instead of the other conservative orientation program.

It's worth emphasizing that the Claremont Institute isn't exactly composed of moderates. It's a fairly prominent far-right think tank, cozy with the most conservative elements of the Republican Party, which has even hosted lectures attended by fringe extremists like Christine O'Donnell.

And just for added fun, also note that Claremont said "it was actually just hosting a meeting the freshmen had organized themselves." It wasn't a nefarious plot to corrupt anyone.

How silly was all of this? RedState's Erick Erickson explained, "For the record, the Claremont Institute is on the opposite coast of the United States from Washington and composed of some of the wingiest wingers in the entire wing-o-sphere. This handwringing about 'Washington Insiders' is verging on paranoid.... Certainly there are legitimate concerns and there must be caution, but Good Lord people, by the time all the cards are on the table we're going to have all the tea party groups labeling their competitors as Washington Insiders. This is nuts."

I knew Erickson would eventually write something I could agree with.

If it weren't bad/sad for this country, it would be fun watching Republicans try to reign in the nasty people they have elevated to power.

It seems the Tea Partyers would fit right in with Andy Jackson's supporters!

Just another example of how these modern throwbacks are a one to one match with 19th century rabble-rousing!

For this group to disrespect the Claremont Institute as not prudent enough to orient conservative lawmakers, there has to be a lot of dead brain cells being shared! -Kevo

Speaking of dead brain cells, US Rep Jim Matheson, the D Blue Dog co-chair, was on MSNBC about an hour ago blaming Speaker Pelosi for being responsible for the loss of seats in Congress. Funny thing about that, yes, those voters were enflamed against Pelosi to the point they voted out Blue Dogs who had voted against her policies. Take That, Blue Dogs.

I thought blind rage and craziness were the whole point of the teabagger movement. If you want to "shake things up" and "knock the hell out of the place," then you gotta get your loony on.

Is this the United States Congress or the Khmer Rouge?

Does this mean Sharron Angle will have to return her Ronald Reagan Freedom Medallion for Courageous Client, which the CI awarded her in '04?

Sounds as though it is brewing into another dustup between CI and the Ludwig von Mises Institute of Auburn, Alabama.

Is it enough to say Erick Erickson will eventually or actually has written something I agree with , or is it a far far better thing to point and laugh at an all world wing creature , talking about the wingyiest of wingy wing creatures .
Extra bonus points are awarded for extreme care in the presentation of issues exposing the consideration of nefarious life threatening "Liberal" contamination .

From the Politico piece it's hard to tell how much of the rage came from the call to shield the new members from lobbyists. Still, any anti-lobbyist sentiment amongst the TP should be encouraged, as should internecine war. Keep the calls coming.

Apparently even the teabaggers recognize the tenuous grasp they have on their "principles" and realize that even the slightest exposure to something closer to rational thought will have a "corrupting" influence on said "principles".

"Still, any anti-lobbyist sentiment amongst the TP should be encouraged, as should internecine war. Keep the calls coming."

Progressives might want to exploit this by pretending to be Tea Partiers...I already have a letter-to-the-editor drafted:

"On [such and such a date] Congressman [So and So] spoke at a Tea Party rally and told the crowd that he would go to Washington to represent we, the people - not the rich, not the lobbyists, not the corporations. And yet, it is now painfully clear that he's actually become one of Washington indsiders he promised to fight against - shame on you, Congressman, for breaking your promise to those who elected you...."

Hey, now we Democrats can throw some monkey wrenches in their works.
If you live in teabaggers district, keep calling him/her and harping on them about letting go of true teabagger values. That you're a Democrat who supported them, but if they stray, you'll drop your support in a NY minute.
And no matter what they do, call and e-mail that they're not teabaggy enough!
Maybe that'll keep them busy enough not to totally f*ck up this country in the next two years.

They say a stopped clock is right twice a day, but I don't think that quite covers the exquisite rareness of what happened on RS. The conjunction of the three suns from The Dark Crystal, perhaps?

"The Onion" is back in business with the emergence of the billionaire funded/corporate media encouraged Tea Party. Fire up the popcorn and turn off the laugh track (it will not be needed). When this gang of uninformed angry nitwits is through establishment Republicans will be an endangered species and their party a minority party for a long, long time.

Just another example of the know-nothingness of the Tea partiers--did Tea Party Patriots even bother to do some basic research to see who the Clarement Institute is, or contact them to try to work out a resolution to the conflict in dates? It's the ignorant paranoia of assuming that everyone but them is an "insider" and in bed with lobbyists.

While the pissing contest between the organisers of the competitive events is hilarious, please spare a thought for the "bone of contention", stuck in the middle of it.

Pity the poor incoming freshmen congressmen. They're still disoriented and, certainly, need an event where they'll receive their "orientation". But, which event to choose? Who's to tell them? Do you bite the hand that's been feeding you or the hand that promises to feed you in the future? Decisions, decisions... That's not why they ran; they ran to stick it to the rascally Dems...
