FRIDAY'S CAMPAIGN ROUND-UP.... Today's installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn't necessarily generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers:

* Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R) appears to have won re-election in Alaska, but Republican nominee Joe Miller has asked a federal judge for an injunction stopping state officials from certifying the election. It's not clear what more evidence Miller needs that he lost, and the state party has already urged him to stop fighting the results.

* Senate Democrats have struggled, to an almost embarrassing extent, to find a chair for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in 2012. In the latest push, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and White House officials are leaning hard on Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) to accept the position.

* Two of the six unresolved U.S. House races are in New York, and in both cases, Democratic incumbents saw their vote totals inch higher yesterday. Rep. Dan Maffei (D-N.Y.) picked up more than 500 votes, and now trails by 303 votes. Also, Rep. Tim Bishop (D-N.Y.) has gained more than 100 votes, and now trails by 272 votes.

* On a related note, Bishop discovered this week that his GOP challenger, Randy Altschuler, is trying to disqualify the votes of the congressman's 86-year-old parents. Classy.

* Sen. James Webb (D) would be quite competitive if he seeks re-election, but if he retires, who would Dems turn to? Former governor and current DNC chair Tim Kaine would probably be the top choice, but keep an eye on recently-defeated Rep. Tom Perriello.

* And Vice President Biden appeared on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" this morning, where the hosts showed him a clip of former half-term Gov. Sarah Palin (R) telling Barbara Waters she thinks she could beat President Obama in 2012. Biden literally laughed, before telling the hosts he should say no more.

Considering how ineffectual they looked against the GOP in the last 2 years and considering how much drawing power Palin can be (DWTS is up 14% this year over last and the Alaska show gave TLC a new ratings record) I think they would be smart to not count out Palin--or that they could lose to her.

I would love to see Perriello run for the Senate, especially after his moronic constituents get a taste of life under GOP House rule.

It's the Bush v. Gore effect applied in a new way - where Norm Coleman was able to delay seating Al Franken for a long, long while, Miller is maybe hoping Murkowski throws in the towel after a couple years of recounts and court battles.

If ratings on DWTS is an indication of the political future of our country, we're doomed.

Actually it's silly. Whatever the public's opinion of Bristol Palin is now, it will be completely different in 2 years - she will have taken whatever career arc she chooses, and her popularity, notoriety, or obscurity will have nothing to do with presidential politics.

I suspect Sarah's public image will endure a similar shift, although I imagine she will stay in the public eye - it's so profitable for her. She may well be a candidate, but the significance of the DWTS ratings has absolutely nothing to do with it.

I love me some Joe...Biden that is! It was TOTALLY the proper response!

I wonder what Ms. Palin will do when she realizes her lucretive gigs with Fox News & the Learning Channel will get the Fred Thompson treatment when she runs for President.

Sounds like Joe Miller needs to get out those 2nd Amendment remedies!

I'd laugh, too, if Sarah Palin were being skewered by the press and other politicians...she is not. She is getting as much coverage as she wants and is given equal status as a contender. Until Joe Biden, Barack Obama and the other Democrats begin to call her on every one of her lies and exaggerations, I see her holding the spotlight into the 2012 election cycle (has it already started?). I also don't see her possible GOP opponents calling her out. Fear is an amazing power. It seems that the entire country is wrapped in the throes of irrational fear about everything. Everywhere I read about the political condition of the world, fear is winning. I firmly believe that the solutions do not reside in the political arena. We are in a spiritual crisis(not religious) and the only way through is a spiritual transformation.

May peace prevail on earth...and beyond.

Palin Coulter 2012?
Palin O'Donnell 2012?
Palin Bachmann 2012?

Celebrity is not the same as electability.

I think her candidacy would follow the same arc as Christine O'Donnell's; win the primary, fail in the general.

Palin Coulter 2012?

Actually, this would be something to watch. The combination of the narcissistic, insecure over-reaching Palin matching up with the East Coast elitist, sarcastic faux-intellectualizing Coulter would be a spectacle. Can you imagine the rivalry between the two? Who'd be the Queen Bee?

Palin talks about East Coast elites - what's Coulter going to do? Trade her black cocktail dress for a pair of mukluks?

Would Coulter be delegated to nanny-duty for little Trigg?

Would she be slipping packs of Kools and airline bottles of vodka to Willow and Piper?

I can just imagine them elbowing each other out of the way to go on Hannity.

It'd be like the Odd Couple with two Mean Girls.

It's not clear what more evidence Miller needs that he lost, and the state party has already urged him to stop fighting the results.

"Geez! Who does a guy have to handcuff and illegally detain in order to get elected around here?!"

I wouldn't count Palin out in 2012. Sure, she's young and inexperienced, but after her stint on the celebrity dance-a-thon, she's going to be incredibly popular. Lots of folks would vote for her. (We were talking about Bristol, right?)

Joe Miller is the prototypical Republican/bagger: a pugnacious, aggressive prick.
