About the Awards

GameSpot's Best of 2010 awards cover special achievements in the field of advancements for games, dubious honors for less-than-admirable qualities, and full awards for individual genres and every major platform. Nominations and awards are the result of rigorous debate among GameSpot's editors, who select up to five finalists and one winner for almost every category (the Game of the Year category includes up to 10 finalists). To qualify for an editorial award, games must have been reviewed by GameSpot between January 1, 2010, and November 30, 2010.

Award categories are intended to call out those games that truly deserve the attention--therefore, while each award is meaningful, it's considered an honor simply to be nominated.

Special Achievement

Best Atmosphere

Atmosphere is a tough thing to get right in a game. It's the culmination of so many different elements: the way a game looks, the way it sounds, the emotions it evokes as you experience the world. But when the game gets it right, you can just feel it.

Red Dead Redemption was just a cowboy old city, almost every Cowboy game haves that atmosphere, so why you guys vote for RRR?

Alan Wake was awesome even if the story was tricky the Atmosphere was epic like perhaps in that kind of concert stage when all the infected where trying to assault u and that fat man was not able to turn the stage concert light on hahaha Heavy Rain? its Atmosphere smells a little speciality on the first part of the game if u know what i mean

Oh come on! Heavy Rain had a far better atmosphere than red dead, people are only voting for what game they like most.

The fact that Red Dead Redemption is winning makes me die inside.
I literally can't believe any gaming site could be so narrow minded to not include Amnesia in the atmospheric category.
    Shame on you Gamespot.

The atmosphere of Metro 2033 was not only horrifying, it created a sense of terror and tension. This underrated game should have won at least this award.

They don't even bother trying "Amnesia" let alone put that title on this list.. and what's with "Costume Quest"... they know how to make user(s) angry..

It's incredible that Amnesia wasn't included in this category.

The western atmosphere of RDR was great and was something not many games before it had accomplished.
