Lunar Eclipse Tonight: 2010 Winter Solstice To Coincide With Total Full Moon Eclipse On December 20, 21 (PHOTOS)

UPDATE: CLICK HERE to see a recap of our live online coverage of the 2010 lunar eclipse, where you can watch video footage of the rare event, and CLICK HERE for photos from around the world. So just how often does a lunar eclipse occur? The next lunar eclipse viewable in the continental U.S. will be on April 15, 2014, according to CNN.

Multiple astronomical events are lining up for a rare display of synchronization tonight as a total lunar eclipse overlaps with 2010's winter solstice.

Depending on the location, late night December 20 or early morning December 21, the full moon will be darkened by Earth's shadow as our planet passes between it and the sun. December 21 is also the winter solstice, the longest night of the year, after which the days will begin to grow longer. Coupled with the lunar spectacle, it means we're in for an especially dark eve.

According to The AP, North and Central America should both be able to view the entire eclipse, which is estimated to take about 3.5 hours. Total eclipse will begin at 11:41 p.m. PST on Monday, or 2:41 a.m. EST on Tuesday -- so obviously West Coasters will have a better chance to catch the magnificent sight without dragging around heavy eyelids and needing an extra dose of espresso the following morning. If you want to set an alarm to catch a brief glimpse of the amber moon, NASA recommends 3:17 a.m. EST for the optimal impression.

According to AolNews.com, NASA reports that this is the first time an eclipse has coincided with a solstice since December 21, 1638, and the next one won't come around again until 2094. The extravaganza in the sky doesn't end there, however, as the Ursids meteor shower will also be taking place. CityStateTime.com reports that this particular annual show is rarely witnessed compared to its brighter counterparts, but stargazers will have an especially exceptional chance to view the display this year because of the eclipse's darkened sky.

Weather permitting, skygazers in North and Central America and a tiny sliver of South America will boast the best seats to this year's only total eclipse of the moon, scheduled for Dec. 20, 2010. Stunning!

I was not able to view the eclipse as the city I live in had very heavy cloud, followed by MORE snow.

The sky was too cloudy in North Alabama. I was really looking forward to seeing it but it was a big disappointment.

Amazingly, it could be seen clearly in the Dallas/Fort Worth area--the 3rd most light-polluted city in the US. I considered taking a drum out in the back yard, to pound on and encourage the spirits to return both the sun (from the shortest day of the year) and the moon from their captivity. But, I decided my neighbors might dislike that, so I just took a couple beers instead.

I wish I was there. It was cloudy and cold in St. Louis. I'd have contributed a 12 pack to the effort and we could have done the traditional get-naked-paint-yourself-blue-with-some-woad-and-beat-drums-winter-solstice-give-us-back-our-sun-and-moon party!

But you're right, neighbors hate that.

I didn't trust that I would wake up to see it so I stayed up until 3:30am to watch it. Cold but awesome. The clouds cleared and it was perfect.

Curses! Clouds ruined this one for me, although I did catch the one that happened a year or so ago.

For some reason we ('pattern-seeking' beings that we are) attached great significance to the alignment of the few rocks we could observe moving around in the sky.. giving birth to astrology, religions, planetary gods, superstitions etc. There are trillions of other planets, stars, comets etc constantly swirling around and lining up with no effect on us whatsoever. Now if one is on track to crash into Earth then I'd be interested ;)

Image #5 is about the point where I had to go back inside. And wouldn't you know it? The Moon was directly overhead and I couldn't see it from any window in the house.
