Located 75 km west from Moorea and 113 km southeast from Ra'iatea & Taha'a, Maiao is a unusual 9.5 km² formation consisting of a single high island (highest elevation of 154 m) and a winding, low-lying motu that spreads from the base of the ridge-like central island and around the reef edge. The motu encloses two hypersaline lagoons — Roto Iti (150 ha) and Roto Rahi (300 ha) — that are connected to each other and the external lagoon by narrow channels.
