Keep investigative journalism alive. Even when you’re not.

If you're here then you probably saw our pretty provocative planned giving ad in our November 2008 issue. It's exactly what you expect from Mother Jones. We don't beat around the bush in our reporting, we get straight to the point—just like this ad campaign. So I'm going to get straight to it with you.

By including Mother Jones in your will, you can keep hard-nose investigative journalism, the kind of journalism that makes change happen, alive and kicking, even after you're gone.

As a reader and supporter of Mother Jones, you know that our driving mission is to dig deep to deliver well-researched, thought-provoking, mind-changing, life-altering, first-rate investigative journalism.

And we're doing all that in an age defined by infotainment, media consolidation, and newsroom cutbacks. Mother Jones is one of only a handful of truly independent, nonprofit journalistic voices left in the national debate. But that same independence means that we work with tight budgets and rely on our readers to secure our future.

I invite you, as someone who clearly sees the value of what Mother Jones is doing, to consider including Mother Jones in your will or estate plan. That single action will ensure that our shared ideals for revelatory investigative journalism prevail—long after we are both gone.

When you include Mother Jones in your will or estate plan, you will become a member of the Mary Harris Jones Legacy Society, named after the great American orator, organizer, hellraiser, and heroine that gives our company its name. It is our way of honoring our original hellraiser, as well as you and your strong commitment to revelatory journalism.

As a Legacy Society member, you'll receive a Mother Jones at no additional cost, along with invitations to special Mother Jones events, our annual report and twice-yearly newsletter, The Insider.

If you would like to discuss this possibility further, please contact Steve Katz, who manages Mother Jones' planned giving program at 1-415-321-1700 or via email at skatz@motherjones.com.

Mother Jones can't do what we do without you—keeping us free from corporate influence, pressure and bias.  And there is no better way to ensure we stay that way, bringing future generations first rate independent investigative journalism, than by including Mother Jones in your will.

What do you want for the world, and how far will you go to make it a reality?

  • Learn more about making bequests
  • You don't have to use cash to make your gift — donate appreciated securities instead. The deduction is the same as for a cash gift, and you pay no capital gains tax.
  • Give an asset that may help us more than it's helping you — such as a life insurance policy whose coverage your family no longer needs, or real estate such as a second home or a parcel of undeveloped land, or even a collection of books or artwork that you no longer have room to display.
  • You can make a gift that costs you nothing during your lifetime — name Mother Jones as a beneficiary of your will or revocable trust, or of your retirement plan.
  • You can make Mother Jones a partner in your giving — you can deed us your home but continue to live there or you can sell us property at a charitable discount.
