Waterloo Medal.
840 Corporal William Keevers came to Australia in
1831 with the 17th (Leicestershire) Regiment of Foot (date of enlistment
in this unit uncertain), accompanied by his wife and children.
He was born at Margate, in Kent.
Keevers had served previously
with the 3rd Foot (10 years 282 days, including service in the Peninsula
War) and the 18th Hussars (2 years, including participation in the
Battle of Waterloo).
These details are listed in Keevers'
Army Account Book for the 17th Foot, held at 3DRL/6687. |
Keevers
was not young when he came to Australia and it is likely that he was
accepted into the 17th Foot because he had been a Waterloo veteran.
These veterans were often given assisted passage to Australia, together
with their families, and a land grant on arrival, in return for guarding
convicts on the outward voyage. Keevers remained in Australia after the
17th Foot left for operations in Afghanistan in 1836. AWM details. |
