Interesting groups of medals awarded to Australians or Kiwis
  • One of the most commonly awarded medals in our history (Australia and New Zealand) is the WW1 Victory medal. 
  • It was never awarded alone. 
  • Therefore groups of 2 or more medals are the norm rather than the unusual.

Pacific Star
1680 Lance Corporal William George Kite, DCM MM MiD enlisted on 20 January 1916 in the 2nd Reinforcements of 56 Battalion, AIF. He returned to Australia on 23 of June 1919. 
  • Awarded 
    • Distinguished Conduct Medal 1 September 1918 at Peronne. Also awarded the 
    • Military Medal on 24 April 1918 for operations near Villers Bretonneux,
    • British War Medal
    • Victory Medal with Mentioned in Despatches Oak leaf
    • 1939/45 War Medal

Kite later served in the Second World War.

William Charles Scurry MC DCM  MiD enlisted as 2668 Private on 19 July 1915 in the 8th Reinforcements of 7 Battalion, AIF. He also served in 58 Battalion, AIF and as commanding officer of 15 Light Trench Mortar Battery, AIF. During the Second World War, as V5965 Major Scurry, he served with 17 Garrison Battalion and was Commanding Officer of No 4 Internment Camp at Tatura, Victoria. Scurry was blinded in one eye. This occurred whilst examining a fuse from a German 'rum jar' minenwerfer projectile which exploded, fragments pierced his right eye and he lost his right index finger. Scurry is best known for his invention known as the 'drip gun', 'drip rifle' or 'pop off rifle' used in the evacuation of Gallipoli in December 1915, a delayed action device for firing a rifle by means of weights operated through water escaping from one tin into another. 
Scurry was awarded the 
Military Cross at 12 October 1916 at Petillon, France and previously the  Victory Medal
Distinguished Conduct Medal in December 1915 at Gallipoli, 1939/45 War Medal

  • The medals of WO1 (later Major) George E Chinn DCM, who was RSM of 3RAR and 6RAR and was a member of AATTV. Chinn rode in the chopper that flew the resupply to D/6RAR at Long Tan. Left to right.

The Military medal is correctly impressed to13-405 GNR J McA MILLS 7/BY N.Z.F.A. It was awarded for bravery on the 3rd October 1917 for putting out a fire in the ammunition pit for his gun . Gazetted 17 DEC 1917.

The WW1 Trio is correctly impressed to13/405 GNR J McA MILLS N.Z.E.F . (The Victory medal SHOULD be to the right of the British War Medal).

The 12yr Territorial service medal is named to J McA MILLS LATE TPR N.Z.E.F.
