The 2010 Census: Winners and Losers
On Dec. 21, 2010, the federal government released some of the first bits of information gathered in the 2010 U.S. Census. As of April 1, 2010, the U.S. population stood at 308,745,538 -- an increase of 9.7 percent since 2000, when the official population was counted at 281,421,906. It's not just a matter for math geeks -- the census determines how many representatives each state gets to send to Congress, and is a strong indicator of trends in the country's population growth. For one thing, it's the slowest rate of growth for the country since the Great Depression. Still, America's growing bigger -- but not necessarily evenly. Here are the big winners and losers of the 2010 Census, so far ....
