Investigators looked for clues at the Islamic Center off St. Johns Bluff Road on Tuesday morning after an incendiary device was ignited near a back door of the facility Monday night during evening worship service.

Tip line

The Council on American-Islamic Relations announced a $5,000 reward Wednesday afternoon for information that leads to the arrest of the bomber.

Anyone with information about the Islamic Center fire bombing can contact the FBI at (904) 248-7000, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office at (904) 630-0500 or CrimeStoppers of Northeast Florida at (866) 277-8477.

A day after releasing security video of the man suspected of firebombing a Jacksonville mosque, law enforcement officials acknowledged they had not gotten nearly as many calls as they expected.

“Someone out there knows who this person is,” said FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Jim Casey of Jacksonville office. “Anyone who recognizes this individual needs to contact us.”

Casey declined to reveal how many calls the FBI has gotten.

Authorities found remnants of a crude pipe bomb in the explosion, which occurred about 9:30 p.m. Monday at the Islamic Center of Northeast Florida on St. Johns Bluff Road.

“This was not a harmless prank,” Casey said. “We found shrapnel from the blast a hundred yards away close to [Florida] 9A.”

At the time of the blast about 60 people were inside. The firebomb caused minor damage to the building. There were no injuries.

Casey said the minor damage was primarily due to the strength of the mosque building. If anyone had been closer to the blast, they would have been injured or killed, he said.

The video has been sent to the main FBI office in Quantico, Va., to be run for facial analysis along with video of another incident on April 4. The April disturbance occurred when a man entered the center and shouted “Stop this blaspheming,” before people chased him away. He’s also wanted for questioning although authorities say they don’ think it’s the same man in Monday’s video.

Officials with the FBI, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Attorney’s Office and Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said they were following several leads in the case. But they declined to discuss those leads or speculate on a motive.

The case is being investigated as a possible hate crime on suspicion of domestic terrorism. The perpetrator also could face civil rights charges. Kevin Frein  with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Jacksonville said it is difficult to say exactly what charges until more is known about the motive.

Authorities said it was unclear if the bombing had anything to do with the recent controversy over Parvez Ahmed’s appointment to the Jacksonville Human Rights Commission. Ahmed, who is Muslim, attends the center.

Lt. Mike Williams with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Homeland Security Division said there is no evidence that hate groups in North Florida are behind this.

Times-Union writers Jeff Brumley and Jim Schoettler contributed to this report.

Sadly Surprised

I'm surprised something like this hadn't happened sooner. There are too many angry people in the world and many of them are living in North Florida. The whole Human Rights Commission fiasco brought more than a few to the surface recently.

Shipdriver54

No need to worry

This just in

Senator Chuck Schumer, Homeland Defense Sec Janet Napolitano, CNN's Candy Crowley, all flaming left wingers assred everyone today that the failed attack in Jacksonville was a "lone wolf" and a "one off" - just as they rushed to describe the failed bombing attempt in Times Square.

Great, good to hear that, I was worried we might have more idiots in Crackerland.

JaxDoc

Hmmm...

So it's a "possible hate crime', is it?
If one wanted to get down to raw facts, just about all crime is a 'hate crime', true?
Rather than worry about someone's thought-processes during the commission of a crime, how about simply prosecuting that person FOR the crime he/she has committed?
The "P.C." mentality of prosecution has created many more problems than it has solved.

Muslims killed on 9/11 almost 20 times the number of people killed by the all people on your list. Keep in mind there have been over 15,000 deadly Islamic terrorist attacks worldwide just since 9/11 - http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/index.html#Attacks . You probably had to think hard to come up with 3 Americans.

@Justia. I said gas can, as that is what the news media was reporting yesterday. Today they are saying pipe bomb. How do we know someone from the center didn't drop it on their way out to their car? I'm just providing reasonable explanations which are just as plausible as it being a baptist. Baptists don't spend a lot of time teaching their congregants how to make IED's.

I think this is a very hard choice, but the price--we think the price is worth it.

--60 Minutes (5/12/96)

If Arab nations (that you call Muslims due to your prejudice) were strong enough, they should invade the US, bring down its violent elected government, and arrest every official and general involved in the mass-slaughter of so many innocent Arab children (all killed for oil) and take them to the Hague to be tried for crimes against humanity like the Nazis.

There is no other government in the entire world that has killed more Arabs (over 1 million if you count the latest destruction and butchery of Iraq) than the US government. This is fact that is very difficult to swallow but it is easy to ignore.

Perhaps your memory is too short but for long decades, the US government has been supporting Arab enemies (aka Israel) and killing a large number of them for no good reason except that US officials believe the value of cheap oil is more important than the lives of human beings.

Well Wishes to the Islamic Community in Jacksonville

This note is directed to the Islamic Community in Jacksonville. I want to thank you for your contributions to our culture. As a Christian, I certainly have a different theological point of view, but I appreciate the many good things you do for Jacksonville. Without you, we would be much poorer than we are now. My hope is that Christians and Muslims will unite against terrorism, violence and hatred. I also hope the perpetrators of this crime are caught and spend many years in prison.

civmar

Unfortunate connection

Yes, this is probably a "revenge" act aimed at the appointment of Professor Parvez to Jacksonville Human Rights Commission. This accomplishes little accept to provide a wedge between the Islamic community of Jacksonville and the rest of Jacksonville. As I said previously, it's tough for a Muslim to get a political position of power. Secret Service will tell you that one of the Congressman who gets the most death threats is Congressman Ellison. As much as Muslims don't need another 9/11, another underwear bomber, or another Times Square bomber, America should not see harm to come to a Muslim or Muslim politician due to their religion. There are many Christian religious zealots who feel this this type bombing is perfectly permissible. It remains to be seen whether or not the Jacksonville interfaith community reaches out to Jacksonville's Muslim community. Bombings like these should not deter Muslims from worshipping or deter Muslims from seeking some type of political public service.

angie

Now is the time

for Christians in Jacksonville to demonstrate Christ's teachings of tolerance and respect - and do everything they can to find the criminal and bring him to justice.

Dogs smarter than Americans?

My dog kept jumping the fence, so I got an electric barrier in the section he always goes to, he went one time...pop, he tried again...pop, 3 years later he hasn't touched that fence or been near it.

Americans get popped over and over again by something that appears the same each time(in the name of Islam), yet we emotionally refuse to admit the obvious because of the weak part of humans that is cultural marxism, or political correctness.

The ironic thing is society taught our most liberal to be that way, when they were babies and touched the hot iron, they learned their lesson and didn't tocuh it again, too bad they lost that keen instinct God gave us to learn from our experiences and recognize danger.

Help

Yeah right. Not from this cities people. The police will get no help from the christian right of this city. They would love to see that place blown to kingdom come. I say they because on this website ive read so many who have made it quite clear. If you live in this city and are'nt a bible thumping freak you'll get no help. Run from here as soon as possible. It's going to take another 200 years for this city to evolve.

Mythbuster

Jaxsmallfarmguy...

So if all Jacksonville Christians are the same, why can't we say all Muslims are the same?

Do you see what you are doing? Screaming intolerance while being intolerant???? Hilarious.

Jaxsmallfarmguy

Intolerant

I've been tolerating it for many many years...i can rant if i want. Yes i know that not all christians are the same..but you have to agree that this city leans way way right on the spectrum. Which for many of us is so offbase and without us balancing it all out...this city has no chance of being a balanced evolved modern city that does'nt allow the church to dictate the goings on of the city.

Mythbuster

Come on...

If admitting the city is conservative by nature, family values, love the flag think the government should have a limited role in our lives yes, I admit Jacksonville leans right.

You said "They would love to see that place blwon to kingdom come".

Now, if I said "Parvez Ahmed would love to se Jacksonville blown to kingdom come"

You would call me a close minded bigot who has no cultural diversity.

It's just typical of someone who myopically sees things one way, to throw blanket statements on an entire city....for thinking something about an entire group of people.

It's like a guy scratching off a lottery ticket saying he hates casinos.

First Amendment

Oh, please

Who says "Stop this blaspheming?" Only a Muslim would say that.

There have been a few hoaxes around the country which Muslims have perpetrated in order to gain sympathy for themselves.

One example is in 2008. A Muslim female at Elmhurst College in Illinois faked an assault by a white man. It was later determined she wrote the "hate" grafitti on the restroom mirror. Look it up on the 'net.

Also in 2008 a "hate crime" was fabricated at a mosque in Dayton, Ohio. This time black males were blamed. It was all a hoax. Look that up on the 'net, too.

I see from previous comments that this is a PC site regarding Mohammedans and Islam, and that comments get deleted if they're not politically correct. Ever heard of Freedom of Speech?

9/11 was the biggest "hate crime" this country has ever experienced, including Pearl Harbor. Islam is a hate ideology that mandates subjugation and mass-murder of non-Muslims:

"Kill non-Muslims wherever you find them. Lie in wait and ambush them, seize and capture them using every stratagem of war." - Qur'an 9:5

My comment will probably get deleted as I dared to quote a Jihad verse from the Koran, right? Oh, and because I posted about previous hoaxes regarding Muslims, right?

My guess is this thing is also a hoax.

Good posts, Gadfly. Of course LE should search inside the mosque. In the Ohio hoax example above, the can of pepper spray was found INSIDE the mosque. But, LE probably doesn't want to "offend" the Mohammedans, anything but that!

"Bottom line, agree with this paper or be politically correct or you will be put in TIME OUT like a little kid. WEBMASTER, if everyone had the same opinion there would be no reason to have an opinion." - posted by robbie davis, above

lol, guess I'll be going in to "time out" since my comment isn't PC. So, I'll copy it since it might be deleted, as yours was, Mr. Davis. What a Kafkaesque, "Big Brother" site.

Jaxsmallfarmguy

Crazies

They'll never find who did this with crazies like you guys out there. And for your information..i could hear stop the blasphamy in any baptis church in this city..so..that excuse don't work..good day to all.

beebonnet

I feel for the Muslims of

I feel for the Muslims of Jacksonville. No one deserves an unprovoked attack, particularly in a peaceful place of worship. Each comment rallying ad nauseam against the worshipers has not one iota of proof to sling hateful accusations.

Not all of Jacksonville's Christian populace is intolerant. Last fall, my church hosted an interfaith dinner with a local Muslim cultural center. It was a wonderful way for the Muslims to feel a little more accepted and less nervous in a less-than-welcoming environment. It was also an opportunity to ask questions about their traditions and even address their feelings toward terrorism. In their world, it isn't as easy as just brushing off the perpetrators as extremists. Unfortunately, the peaceful are lumped in along with terrorists who distort the teachings of the Koran to fit their agenda. They no more want to be associated with Al-Qaeda or Hezbollah than I do David Koresh or Jim Jones.

I pray that the worshipers don't end up the subject of more vitriol or violence thrown in their direction than already has been. They are the true victims here. And as a Christian, I go forth with Christ's own words: "And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.'" I think we as Christians tend to forget this far too often.

If this is OK - what Next?

So if it's excusable because of 9/11 - what next? Should someone take action against Latinos because they are immigrants? Should we expect a Tienda along Beach Blvd or Atlantic, or in St. Nicholas to be next?

People said during the health care debate that the hate-filled rhetoric from the right would lead to this - and it did. And it won't stop now. Until those who stir it up and then sit back and laugh are held accountable it will continue. Oddly - the same people who stir it up and condon the violence love to say that somehow they are better than Bill Ayers.

I think not.

Nobody excused this, we are replying to the people saying "Jacksonville is intolerant".

I think its simple. You get mad when we say all Muslims are evil because of what terrorists do, but you are doing the same thing by saying "Jackosnville is intolerant because of what one redneck does.

You have different rules depending on who you are talking about, we can either blanket thoughts and ideas on groups based on isolated incidents, or we can't.

What does this have to do with health care? lol

New Blood

Maybe they can hire Jack Bauer to investigate the bombimng. I heard he is looking for a job..

Tabmoc

First Amendment - Wrong

Your facts come from a web-site www.jihadwatch.org - a blog which aims to bring public attention to what it describes as "the concerted effort by Islamic jihadists... to destroy [non-Muslim] societies and bring them forcibly into the Islamic world".

Thus the claim of the Dayton Ohio hoax is not substantiated by any factual statements made by law enforcement investigators.

And since you have no proof that the incident of St. Johns Bluff Road was self-inflicted - you are making false and misleading statements to try and support any otherwise misguided view point.

Yeah - I get it.

Tabmoc

Casual -

The arguments and the statements toward undocumented immigrants has nothing to do with "illegal" - there are "illegal" Australians here, "illegal" Irish and other Europeans here, "illegal" Canadians here. The law in Arizona, the rhetoric of Rubio and Scott, and the talking heads, the Tea Party and the other "conservatives" is anti-Latino. Period. The entire group assumes that anyone with dark hear, brown eyes and a nice tan is here illegally - when in fact you have no idea, no proof, no real evidence. You just make a blanket statement.

Tabmoc

mythbuster

"What does this have to do with health care? lol"

My point was that during the healthcare debate (particularly in the last week of it) - there were a lot of people who said the discourse had gotten to the point where someone would resort to violenence.

My point is that the tone of the rhetoric over the Commission here in Jacksonville certainly is proof of that - and anticipating the rhetoric we'll hear over immigration in the coming months can or will result in similar violence against a particular group.

Its funny to me how anytime this story is posted on this website, the conversation on the message boards have nothing to do with the issue at hand. Alll some of you are doing is showing your bias and prejudice. Lets break this down. Some individual who attempted to commit a terrorist act in Jacksonville is running around our streets. It shouldnt matter if it was a mosque, church, or synogogue. The fact is we cant and should not tolerate this as civilized people. If you cant seperate the fact that the individuals who occupy this bldg are Muslims, pretend the building was a Church or any place you may frequent. All of these other conversations are really irrelevant.

Intolerance

I'd have to say it's well represented by both sides of the aisle. One side is angry and doesn't care if it's viewed to be intolerant. The other considers it'self so enlightend, so poised. When actually they are the most dishonest and the least tolerant of all the groups represented (save maybe the followers of the true faith). The groups of which I speak are only tolerant, and beneivolent only when you agree with them. Currently they control the House, Senate, and WH. But not for long.

Tabmoc -- ALL illegals are

Tabmoc -- ALL illegals are included in the law (which AZ didn't come up with, but merely decided to enforce!) but I haven't heard of a big influx of Australians breaking into AZ!!!! No one is against Latinos, just ILLEGALS (whether Latinos, Australians, Canadians, Irish, etc), no matter their skin and hair color, but for the most part, the Latinos I know usually do have dark hair, eyes and skin. If I'm a LE officer and arrest a guy for burglary who is blond, blue eyed, with a German accent, I think any reasonable person would then check to see if he is here legally. If I arrest a guy for burglary who is black haired, brown eyed with a spanish accent, and especially if I am in a state along the border of Mexico, I might deduce that he may be an illegal. They are not 'racial profiling' just using common sense that everyone in world knows.

All of you 'Progressive'/ Liberal promoters of such ideals and trash stand a better chance of being rounded up and either killed out of hand or sent to 'Re-education' camps than I would in such a hypothetical situation (more than likely I'd be dead from fighting).
