• National Oil Spill Commission Final Report

    In an early excerpt of their final report, the National Oil Spill Commission found BP, Transocean, Haliburton and federal overseers are largely to blame for the Gulf of Mexico disaster last April.

    The presidentially-sponsored Commission has spent the past eight months examining the accident, considered the worst oil spill in U.S. history, and has released its final report to President Obama today. More »

    Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry (D-MA) spoke earlier today about recent political debates as proof that America’s role as a global leader is threatened by the discord on Capitol Hill.     Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels (R) delivered the annual State of the State Address at the Indiana General Assembly in Indianapolis.  Governor Daniels began his first four-year term as Indiana’s 49th governor in 2005.  He was elected to his second term in November, 2008.

    New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (R) delivered the annual State of the State Address in Trenton.  The Republican governor, in his first State of the State speech since taking office a year ago, told lawmakers he won’t raise taxes in his next budget, wants to start debate on his plan to fix the state’s underfunded pension system, and plans to focus on education reform in the coming year.  Governor Christie was elected in November, 2009 and was the first Republican to win Statewide Election in New Jersey in 12 years.

    State Department Briefing on Sudan Referendum

    On the third day of voting in the South Sudan independence referendum, one of the lead U.S. negotiators for Sudan and the Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs spoke with reporters at the State Department to provide an update on the vote.

    Brookings Institution Discussion on Haiti After the Earthquake

    The Brookings Institution hosted a discussion on the earthquake in Haiti.  Activists who recently traveled there gave an assessment of the current situation, and also their insights on the remaining problems that are hindering reconstruction efforts. Topics of discussion include humanitarian aid concerns, rubble removal efforts, disease response as well as sexual violence and sanitation concerns in Haitian camps.  Among the speakers was actor and humanitarian Sean Penn who currently heads a group devoted to providing relief to Haiti.

    Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Philip Crowley conducts a daily briefing at the State Department.  Mr. Crowley spoke to reporters about the shootings in Tucson, Arizona, Secretary Clinton's travel to the Middle East, Vice President Biden's travel to Aftghanistan and other topics.

    National Press Foundation Federal Budget Seminar

    The National Press Foundation conducted a seminar on understanding the 2012 federal budget. Speakers include Politico’s Congressional Bureau Chief and staffers from the House Budget Committee. Panelists discussed the issues that will influence the budget and the politics involved.  The Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, DC hosted the event.

    CSIS: Discussion on Sudan Referendum

    Recently, thousands of people in Southern Sudan began casting ballots during a week-long vote to decide whether their region will remain united with northern Sudan or become an independent nation.   The referendum is part of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) that ended a 22-year civil war.   The Center for Strategic and International Studies hosted a discussion on future scenarios for the country after the referendum.

    "Moment of Silence" Held for Giffords, Other Victims
    Monday     Washington, DC

    Pres. Obama  held a national "Moment of Silence" for the victims of Saturday's shooting in Tucson, AZ, that left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) in critical condition and killed six others, including a federal judge. The President observed the tribute to the injured and the dead today on the White House South Lawn.
