• DPS Discrimination Investigation
People at a meeting between Department of Public Safety Commissioner Kevin Ward and the Black Caucus accuse Ward of promoting a Highway patrol trooper based on his race. FOX 25 obtained documents from members of the Black Caucus stating their concern over diversity within DPS. The letter, written by state Representative Mike Shelton, said he is giving Ward a timetable to turn over a plan to boost the number of minorities serving in the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. A second letter from Shelton, sent nearly two months later, states the Black Caucus is "growing very weary" of Ward's "unwillingness to meet." Ward met with the Black Caucus days later, and shortly therafter a black trooper was promoted. Ward denies allegations from people at the meeting who say he promised the caucus he would promote a minority.
