Blue Grass Army Depot (BGAD)
provides conventional ammunition services, Chemical Defense Equipment management
and manufacturing capabilities for the Department of Defense. The Depot covers
more than 14,500 acres and contains more than 1,100 structures, including
ammunition storage bunkers, warehouses, industrial facilities and administrative
buildings.
Recently, BGAD has become involved in the
manufacture of armor components, inserts and parts for armored vehicles.
International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and manufacturing
certifications, combined with metal-working capabilities, have enhanced BGAD's
value to both the warfighter and DoD.
Today, BGAD has about 1016
personnel on site with a payroll of $79 million in 2009. Employment is at an
historic high and the total payroll has increased more than 216% from $25
million in 1996 when BGAD became a separate organization with the BRAC (Defense
Base Closure and Realignment Commission) at Lexington Blue Grass Station. Prime
contracts at BGAD have seen a dramatic increase in the last decade. In 1998,
prime contract awards totaled around $2.6 million, but in 2009, the total awards
were more than $30 million. Total BGAD budget for FY 09 exceeds $121 million.
The BGAD commander is also responsible for Anniston Defense Munitions Center in
Alabama and Scranton Army Ammunition Plant in Pennsylvania.
