McQuarrie is at least the third screenwriter to take a stab at the project, about a farmer who becomes an unlikely hero after the kidnapping of a princess disrupts the truce between humans and giants. Mark Bomback ('Race to Witch Mountain') and Darren Lemke ('Shrek Forever After') wrote previous drafts, according to the Reporter.
McQuarrie and Singer have worked together off and on for nearly 20 years, since their first feature, 'Public Access.' Their second feature, 1995's 'Suspects,' made A-listers of both of them. Since then, they've collaborated on 1998's 'Apt Pupil,' 2008's 'Valkyrie' and the forthcoming 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2,' due next year.
With McQuarrie in place, Singer is poised to begin casting for 'Jack,' which he is scheduled to shoot this summer in England.
