Musings on the culture of keeping up appearances

Golden Globes: Natalie Portman’s winning look

January 16, 2011 |  8:52 pm

Golden Globe winner and mom-to-be Natalie Portman looked absolutely stunning in her beautifully draped Viktor & Rolf gown.

To play up the pink and red colors of her dress, the new face of Miss Dior Cherie went with a palette of ultra-feminine shades –- all by Dior, natch.

Makeup artist Sarai Fiszel created a look for Portman, inspired by her dust-pink strapless dress adorned with a hand-embroidered red silk rose.

On her skin, Fiszel used Dior Hydra Life Sorbet Crème and DiorSkin Forever Extreme Wear Makeup
in No. 020. Her cheeks were gently flushed with DiorBlush in Rosebud and her eyes swept with Dior 5-Colour Eye shadow in Soft Pink Design No. 018. Diorshow Lash  Maximizer and Diorshow Iconic Mascara in Black played up her lashes and Dior Waterproof Crayon Eyeliner in Trinidad further defined her eyes.

Golden Globes: Amy Adams' beautiful post-pregnancy glow

January 16, 2011 |  8:37 pm

Amy Adams
Golden Globes nominee Amy Adams’ hair and makeup looked just right against her jewel-toned, teal Marchesa gown.

To achieve this look, her makeup artist Molly Stern went with the “painterly feel” of her dress, starting with YSL Perfect Touch Radiant Brush foundation and Giorgio Armani sheet blush in #2.

Lancome’s Taupe Craze eye shadow (out in February) was swept across her eyelids for a natural finish, as was Le Stylo Waterproof eyeliner in Minuit.

To get her perfectly pink pout, Lancome’s Color Design Matte Lip Color in Stylista and Le A’bsolu Nu in Evening Lace (out in March) were applied to her lips.

The new mom looked positively radiant in her dress, which perfectly complimented her upswept ginger hair.

Golden Globes: And the men wore ...

January 16, 2011 |  8:23 pm

Boys1

Justin Bieber was in a pint-sized D&G tuxedo with skinny tie and sneakers. Geoffrey Rush wore his hat to dinner. And Paul Giamatti's pants didn't appear to match his jacket.

Boys2

And in one Tweeter's words, "Christian Bale is wearing Joaquin Pheonix." In other words, the guys' styles at the Globes were all over the map. Jesse Tyler Ferguson's Etro blue paisley bowtie and owl cufflinks showed some panache. Robert De Niro knows you can't go wrong in Armani. And Colin Firth looked perfect, as usual, in a classic black Tom Ford tux.

Golden Globes: Jewelry done right

January 16, 2011 |  7:54 pm

Jewelryone

Most creative use of amazing jewels: Julianne Moore's Lanvin gown held up by a Bulgari choker necklace with 79 carats of diamonds. Wow. Claire Danes' 1970s-era Fred Leighton gold and diamond cuff was the perfect accent to her modern-looking, neon pink Calvin Klein dress. I also thought Natalie Portman's diamond Tiffany necklace was just the right touch with her Viktor & Rolf gown.

Jewelrytwo

And you gotta love Johnny Depp with his vintage pocketwatch, circa 1900, and "sparrow" ring, circa 1840. The pieces are from the Gray jewelry gallery in West Hollywood. Hailee Steinfeld, on the other hand, wore almost no jewelry, except for a nine-row sterling silver Elsa Peretti bracelet valued at less than $950, which seems just right for a 14-year-old.

Jewelrythree

But what is up with the black enamel and turquoise brooch on Nicole Kidman's shoulder? At first, I thought it was a microphone. Turns out it's also Fred Leighton, circa 1920s.

Golden Globes: Megan Fox -- more old-Hollywood hair

January 16, 2011 |  7:40 pm

Megan Fox was true to her bombshell status in an Armani Prive gown and soft old-Hollywood waves.

Hairstylist Andy Lecompte was inspired to create a look for her that was “classic Megan,” with a glamorous vibe to complement her stunning one-strap gown.

To achieve this look, Lecompte started by applying Phyto professional volume mousse before blow drying. He set her hair using a 3/4-inch barrel curling iron and then pin curls. Once he released the pin curls, Lecompte brushed out her hair using a Sheila Stotts detangling brush and gave the hair a deep side part.

He applied a dab of Oribe gel serum to his fingertips and tucked the hair behind her ear.

Golden Globes: Fresh-looking clutches on the red carpet

January 16, 2011 |  7:30 pm

Clutches

The freshest-looking bags on the red carpet were modern and sleek. The box-like Roger Vivier bois de nuit clutch was the purse of choice for Megan Fox and Anne Hathaway at the Golden Globes. I also like Emma Stone's sculptural oval gold Calvin Klein clutch.

Golden Globes: January Jones’ ultra-glamorous old Hollywood hairdo

January 16, 2011 |  7:09 pm

The only thing rivaling January Jones’ fire-red Versace dress would be her perfectly coiffed blond mane. Her hairstylist Renato Campora says he was inspired by the styles of the 1960s, which he believes are the most striking decade for beauty. He also aimed to channel classic, old Hollywood glamour with a modern twist, full of volume and timeless elegance.

Campora started on Jones’ wet hair and applied Frederic Fekkai Advanced Full Blown Styling Whip to create volume and Fekkai Coiff Contrôle Ironless Straightening Balm to smooth out the hair. He parted the hair to the side and blow-dried using a round brush. To create waves, he put hair in hot rollers and let them sit for 10 minutes. Once he took the rollers out, Campora brushed through the hair, creating volume and constructing shape for the style. To finish off her look, Renato sprayed Fekkai Coiff Sheer Hold Hairspray for an all-night hold.

Golden Globes: Straight hair and fringe rule the red carpet

January 16, 2011 |  6:42 pm

Sure, there’s been your fair share of garden variety up-dos at the Golden Globes this evening, but the most memorable beauty looks have been the slick and sexy ponytail and the chic, straight hair with eye-grazing bangs.

Both Olivia Wilde and Sandra Bullock were sporting long, pin straight hair with perfect face-framing fringe. No doubt a straight iron was taken to both their heads, but thankfully there was no loss of volume or movement in their hairdos. And each actress seemed to be channeling '60s French style icons, which was so refreshing to see among a sea of super-tight, uber-curled and oversprayed up-dos.

Golden Globes: On the red carpet, less is more

January 16, 2011 |  6:10 pm

Claire Danes' neon pink halter gown is another winning Calvin Klein look. Her sleek updo complements it perfectly. Great showing for Calvin Klein's designer Francisco Costa tonight. Emma Stone's backless peach gown was also gorg.

Tilda Swinton is rocking a crisp white shirt and satin ballskirt. I'm guessing it's from the Jil Sander runway collection that essentially defined the spring season.

Simpler is almost always better when it comes to the red carpet. It also happens to be what's going on in fashion right now, where minimalism has been the watchword for the last two seasons.

Golden Globes: More bad -- Halle Berry, not liking the lingerie look

January 16, 2011 |  5:59 pm

Berryhathaway

Halle Berry's black Nina Ricci, um, getup with a satin corset and sheer slit skirt belongs in the bedroom. And Anne Hathaway looks like a disco ball. And no one has claimed Leighton Meester's dress yet. Someone's saying Burberry. Hiyiyi.

Golden Globes: Mila Kunis' Audrey Hepburn-inspired beauty

January 16, 2011 |  5:41 pm

Mila Kunis
To balance out the high drama of Mila Kunis’ emerald-green gown, her makeup artist Tracey Levy went for Audrey Hepburn-inspired makeup with coral hues to contrast the cool-toned dress.

Using Lancome makeup, Levy applied Teint Miracle Lit From Within foundation and Blush Subtil in Sheer Amourose. Her eyes were swept with Color Design Pan Palette in Coral Crush and Teal Fury. Lashes were plumped up with Hypnose Drama mascara in Excessive Black. L’Absolu Nu lipstick in Coral Ribbon (out in March) was used on the lips to carry out the fresh peachy glow.

Kunis’ makeup certainly looked youthful and fun. Her dress and hair, on the other hand, felt a bit too heavy-handed for such a young beauty.

Golden Globes: The good (Julianne Moore) and the bad (Leighton Meester)

January 16, 2011 |  5:35 pm

Mooreswintonmeester

Julianne Moore's shocking pink and asymmetrically draped Lanvin gown is the epitome of chic. I love the jeweled necklace halter.

Leighton Meester blew it. Beige and long-sleeved? Really? Has she joined a religious cult? You only get to be in your 20s on the red carpet once. Give us something better, please.

And now that I've gotten a better look at Nicole Kidman's Prada dress, the fabric is really unforgiving. It's leaving nothing to the imagination, let's just put it that way.
