Burglary suspect leads deputies on foot chase through yards, into house in Lancaster

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies pursued a burglary suspect through more than a dozen Lancaster yards, ending with a standoff after the man locked himself inside a stranger’s bedroom, authorities said Wednesday.

Deputies spotted two men Tuesday in a vehicle matching one reportedly seen at a residential burglary earlier in the day. When they tried to stop the men, the driver got out and ran, officials said. He hopped more than a dozen fences before forcing his way through the back door of a home in the 1200 block of East Donatello Street, Capt. Mike Parker said.

Deputies heard screaming inside the home. As they entered, a woman and her three teenage daughters ran out.

The man, who sheriff's officials identified as Bobby Smith-Harper, 20, had locked himself inside one of the bedrooms and was trying to break a hole through one of the walls to escape, Parker said. As a helicopter landed nearby carrying the sheriff’s department's SWAT team, the man finally surrendered, Parker said.

A second suspect, Glen Gaines, also 20, was arrested without incident.

Capt. Henry Romero of the East Los Angeles sheriff’s station said that Deputy Mohamed Ahmed, 27, was allowed to go home although he is still undergoing medical treatment for wounds he received in the Jan. 11 shooting.

According to the Sheriff's Department, Ahmed and his training officer were on patrol in East Los Angeles about 7:15 p.m. when they saw 37-year-old Nestor Torres -- on parole from a felony gun conviction -- acting suspiciously in a parked car at North Brannick Avenue, near Floral Drive in the unincorporated Nestor Torres, pictured in a previous jail booking photo.  When the deputies approached him, a struggle ensued, sheriff’s officials said, and Torres shot Ahmed in the face, prompting Ahmed's training deputy to return fire, killing Torres.

Ahmed was admitted  to County-USC Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition. Doctors placed wiring in Ahmed's jaw, performed surgery on one eye and inserted a breathing tube into his windpipe.

Student held in gun incident at Willowbrook school

A 17-year-old high school student was arrested after he was intercepted trying to bring a loaded handgun onto the campus of a South Los Angeles-area continuation school, Los Angeles County sheriff's officials said Friday.

The incident, which occurred Thursday morning at Cesar Chavez Continuation High School in unincorporated Willowbrook, came two days after two students were wounded -- one of them critically -- when a Gardena High School student reached into his backpack and accidentally fired a gun that was stashed inside, authorities said.

The 17-year-old suspect, who has not been identified because of his age, has been charged as a juvenile by the Los Angeles County district attorney's office with two possession-related criminal counts. Prosecutors also are seeking to have the boy tried as an adult.

In the latest case, sheriff's detectives were near the campus attempting to locate a witness to an unrelated crime when they saw a 17-year boy acting suspiciously about 8:15 a.m. near the entrance to the Cesar Chavez campus, which is part of the Compton Unified School District, said sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker.

Coroner's officials reported 15 killings in Los Angeles County between Jan. 10 and Monday evening, bringing the year-to-date total to 27, according to data collected for The Times' Homicide Report database.

Countywide homicide rates still remain lower than in previous years: There were 28 killings during the same period last year, 36 in 2009 and 40 in 2008.

Killings last week included two shooting deaths in Compton, incidents that took place just days before sheriff's officials touted a dramatic drop in homicides in that city last year.

On Jan. 11, Marcus Walker, 20, was standing near Alondra Boulevard and Aprilia Avenue about 2 p.m. when three men approached him and he was shot in the head and leg.

Sheriff’s homicide Det. Traci Gonzalez, who is handling the case, said Walker was associated with a gang and the assailants are believed to be gang members.

A day after Walker was shot, Leonard Thrower, 18, was killed in the 2000 block of North Santa Fe Avenue. He was shot in the face, torso and arms while standing on a sidewalk about 8:35 p.m.

Two men were shot and killed by law enforcement officials last week.

Former juvenile probation camp counselor to be sentenced on child abuse charges

A former substitute teacher accused of inciting student violence at a Los Angeles County juvenile probation camp pleaded no contest Tuesday to six felony counts of child abuse, authorities said.

Stephen Wesley, 44, of Winnetka, allegedly matched up six students from rival gangs at Camp Karl Holton in the San Fernando Valley to fight on Aug 8, 2008, said Los Angeles County Deputy Dist. Atty. Ilean Richard. The incident was recorded on video.

In addition to serving 180 days in county jail and one year of anger management counseling, Wesley will  lose his teaching credential, according to the district attorney's office.

Judge Terry Smerling set sentencing for April 15 at Pasadena Superior Court.

While a substitute teacher at the camp, Wesley taught math and science to teenage boys between the ages of 13 and 17. The camp, located in the foothills of the San Fernando Valley, has since been shut down.

Hikers injured in Angeles National Forest

Two hikers were injured Sunday afternoon when they fell in separate incidents in Eaton Canyon, a popular recreational area in Angeles National Forest.

One man fell 200 feet at 1:30 p.m. and the second man fell 50 feet about 4 p.m., said Deputy Jeff Gordon of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

After hoisting up the first hiker, a crew on a department helicopter had to return to the canyon for the second rescue. Both men, who were not identified, were in their 20s. They were taken to a local hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries, Gordon said.

He did not know the precise circumstances of the accidents, but said they occurred in roughly the same area, between the canyon’s second and third waterfalls.

The canyon, north of Altadena, is typically filled with people hiking up to the waterfalls on weekend days.

Second disabled woman is identified in abuse video

Authorities said they have located a second victim shown on a gruesome video showing disabled women being sexually abused by men.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials said Friday that they served search warrants at three residences as part of the ongoing investigation.

Ernie Lloyd, 37, of Los Angeles was arrested Saturday after he turned himself in to Los Angeles police in Hollywood in connection with the assault of an unidentified 25-year-old woman shown in the video.

The video, given to sheriff's deputies by an anonymous source, shows men having sex with women, many of whom appear to be disabled, with some in wheelchairs and wearing diapers.

But prosecutors said the tapes alone are not sufficient evidence, telling Sheriff's Department detectives that they need to provide more facts about the women's medical histories, level of disabilities and other information.
