O.C. surfer injured at Mavericks improves in hospital

The condition of a critically injured Orange County surfer has improved three days after he nearly drowned in a series of enormous waves at Mavericks surf spot near Half Moon Bay.

On Tuesday morning , doctors at Stanford University Medical Center upgraded the condition of 30-year-old Jacob Trette from "critical" to "fair."

Paramedics flew Trette to the hospital Saturday morning after he was pulled from the waves unconscious.

A freelance photorapher from Australia who helped rescue him told CBS' "The Early Show" he initially thought Trette was dead.

"I was really surprised when we got him to shore that he had a pulse," the rescuer said. "I was pretty happy about that."

An Australian firefighter who rescued a California surfer critically injured by a large wave says he initially thought the man was dead.

Russell Ord was videotaping surfers Saturday when he saw two large waves hit the group at Mavericks, a famous surf spot north of Half Moon Bay.

He says the first wave "cleaned up" about five riders and the second wall of water hit around 20 seconds later.

Ord told CBS's "The Early Show" Tuesday that the injured surfer, 30-year-old Jacob Trette, was "full of water" but had a pulse. A spokeswoman at Stanford Medical Center says Trette is still in critical condition.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Trette is an accomplished surfer from San Clemente but had attempted the waves at Mavericks just once before.

Former Dodger Milton Bradley arrested after allegedly threatening woman [Updated]

Bradley
Former Dodger outfielder Milton Bradley was arrested Tuesday for allegedly making threats against a woman, police said.

Bradley was taken into custody about 10 a.m. in the 5300 block of Oak Park Court in Encino, the Los Angeles Police Department said. The identity of the woman or details of the alleged threats were not released.

Bradley was booked on suspicion of making criminal threats at the Van Nuys jail, where he was released Tuesday evening after posting $50,000 bail, said Officer Karen Rayner.

In November 2004,  Bradley was arrested after he allegedly confronted a police officer during a traffic stop in Ohio.

The Dodgers traded Bradley to the Oakland A's in 2005 after he threw a plastic water bottle toward fans at Dodger Stadium and had a clubhouse confrontation with former Times reporter Jason Reid.

[Corrected at 8:25 p.m.: A previous version of this post said Bradley played this past season for the Texas Rangers. He played with the Seattle Mariners.]

Lenny Dykstra accused of sexual assault by housekeeper; no charges filed

Lenny Dykstra in 2010

Former pro baseball player Lenny Dykstra’s housekeeper accused him of sexual assault, according to records, though prosecutors declined to file charges this month citing a lack of evidence.

According to the rejection memo by Los Angeles County prosecutors, a female housekeeper alleged Dykstra would force her to give him oral sex on Saturdays. However, the 41-year-old woman’s case seemed to flounder because of an apparent lack of evidence that the activity was forced.

The woman told investigators she “needed the job and the money so she went along with the suspect’s requests rather than lose her job,” according to the filing, and “returned to work in the suspect’s home with knowledge that she obtained from the Internet of a claim of sexual assault by another woman.”

According to prosecutors, the woman did not report the alleged assaults until after Dykstra failed to pay her $2,000 he owed her. Investigators found text messages from the woman to Dykstra demanding the money and asking for her job back.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Dykstra denied the allegations, saying the woman was trying to extort him to buy drugs.

“If she was assaulted on Saturdays, then I’m a ... ballerina dancer on Sundays,” Dykstra said. “This is a maid. That’s not even worth commenting on, are you kidding me?”

CicLAvia organizers plan for Round 2

Last October, CicLAvia drew an estimated 100,000 pedestrians and bicyclists to a long stretch of city streets that were cordoned off to traffic. Now organizers say they are ready to do it again.

The next incarnation of CicLAvia will take place April 10, according to Aaron Paley, CicLAvia's producer and a member of its steering committee. He said its footprint will be similar to October's route, which zigzagged from East Hollywood through Westlake and into downtown and Boyle Heights.

Paley said the committee, a diverse collection of bike activists, transportation experts, academics, artists and event planners, plans to host two more events in 2011, in July and October, and would one day like to see a monthly CicLAvia in L.A.

"We have tremendous momentum," said Paley, who reported that city officials had approached the group after the first event to start planning the second. "There wasn’t any question of whether this was gonna happen again. It was just, 'How soon can we do it, and how high should we aim?' "

The concept of the ciclovia, which is Spanish for bicycle path, originated in Bogota, Colombia, three decades ago. Now each Sunday there, hundreds of thousands of people take to the temporarily car-free streets. Many other cities around the world, including New York, have hosted similar events.

L.A. councilwoman calls for report on downtown football stadium proposal

A member of the Los Angeles City Council called Tuesday for a report on how a new downtown NFL stadium would effect operations at the Los Angeles Convention Center, which would share the proposed site.

Councilwoman Janice Hahn, who heads the council committee that deals with tourism and trade, said she wants updates on all of the negotiations that are at play in a possible NFL deal.

“I think it’s a great idea to bring a football stadium to our city,” she said in a statement. “However, since the Convention Center is a city asset, we need to know the potential impacts that these plans may have on it.”

Anschutz Entertainment Group, which owns Staples Center next door to the convention center, has been talking up the idea of taking it over, demolishing a portion and building a stadium with a retractable roof as part of the facility.

In her request for a briefing, Hahn noted that the city pays $46 million annually on debt incurred from the last major renovation of the convention center. She also said the city’s top budget official was considering asking outside companies to present proposals for privately managing the convention center.

Hahn has had extensive political ties to AEG in recent years. That company was the biggest donor to a ballot measure that rolled back term limits, allowing her to successfully seek a third four-year term. In addition, that company’s lobbyist is Chris Modrzejewski. His wife, Denise Modrzejewski, has been a fundraiser for two of Hahn’s reelection campaigns.

Man who stole championship ring of former Dodger faces two years in prison

An Azusa man faces two years in state prison after pleading guilty to stealing a 1988 World Series ring belonging to former Dodger Jimmy Campanis, as well as other expensive jewelry at local golf courses, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Frank Jose Carrillo, 40, faces sentencing Feb. 17 before Commissioner Wade at Pomona Superior Court, said Jane Robison, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

Carrillo pleaded guilty Dec. 13 to all six felony counts, including three counts of grand theft of personal property, one count of receiving stolen property and two counts of second-degree commercial burglary, Robison said.

The championship ring belonging to Campanis was stolen Nov. 15 while he was participating in a charity golf event in Chino Hills. La Verne Police officers arrested Carillo two days later. Investigators recovered the championship ring along with numerous Rolex watches, wallets and other items.

Carrillo admitted stealing the items from golf bags and golf carts between June 2009 and November 2010, prosecutors said.

2 hikers found safe in Riverside County

Two hikers were found in good health Monday after getting lost overnight while hiking in the Cleveland National Forest west of Lake Elsinore, authorities said.

Heather Johann of Venice and Devin Jent of Pasadena, both in their late 20s, called the California Highway Patrol on a cellphone about 5 p.m. Sunday and asked for help after getting lost while hiking near the 3400 block of Ortega Highway, said Melissa Nieburger, spokeswoman for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Search and rescue crews from Riverside, San Diego and San Bernardino counties joined forces to look for the couple from Sunday into Monday morning, Nieburger said.

The hikers were found shortly before noon Monday near the Ortega Highway, she said. They were uninjured.

“They were checked out by medical personnel on the scene and have been reunited with family,” Nieburger said. “They didn’t need to go to the hospital.”

Search and rescue personnel attempted to sweep the area using helicopters but were stymied by snowfall and poor weather, Nieburger said.

Kobe Bryant’s deal with Turkish Airlines outrages Armenian Americans

KobeLakers star Kobe Bryant's two-year endorsement deal with Turkish Airlines has sparked protest among Armenian Americans in Los Angeles and nationwide, some threatening to boycott the basketball player unless he backs out of the contract.

In a statement announcing the deal, Turkish Airlines described Bryant as a "global brand ambassador." The airline is seeking to publicize the start of nonstop flights in March from Istanbul to Los Angeles with the basketball star appearing in a blitz of TV, billboard, print and online ads early next year.

For years, Armenian Americans have pushed the U.S. to recognize the early 20th century killings of some 1.5 million Armenians in what was then the Ottoman Empire as genocide, a term the Turkish government has strenuously rejected.

California has 600,000 to 700,000 Armenians, with a heavy concentration in Southern California, said Aram Hamparian, executive director of the Armenian National Committee of America.

"Many of them are fans of the Lakers and fans of Kobe, at least until now," he said.

Armenians especially object to the airline's close connection to the Turkish government, he said.

"This is not a matter of a private company that Kobe has signed a deal with," Hamparian said. "It's a state carrier with a heavy government affiliation."

Man convicted of resisting arrest after Lakers’ championship victory

A Los Angeles man who failed to heed police orders after the celebration of the Lakers’ NBA title victory in June was convicted Thursday of resisting arrest, city prosecutors said.

Giancarlo Quijada was sentenced to 36 months’ probation and 45 days of Caltrans work. Judge Gregory Dohi also ordered Quijada receive a four-month suspended jail sentence and found him in violation of his probation in connection with an earlier vandalism case.

Quijada was one of at least 45 people arrested June 17 outside Staples Center Arena after the victory by the Los Angeles Lakers for the NBA championship. Thus far, the city attorney’s office has secured convictions against 12 people for charges including inciting a riot, disturbing the peace, resisting arrest, throwing objects at a vehicle, vandalism, arson, assault on a police officer, battery, public intoxication and outstanding warrants.

The city attorney's office said Quijada was among 200 people who failed to heed police commands to immediately disperse. Prosecutors also alleged that Quijada ran from officers after throwing a rock and failed to stop after being instructed.

"Quijada continued to be combative and aggressive even after officers took him into custody," the city attorney's office said in a statement.
