The Opening Celebration!

We are proud to inform you that the Boarding School's Opening ceremony has taken place last Saturday 27th November. After a number of years, we can say that hard work has paid off!

Colourful delegations from the villages around Tahua, local authorities, teachers, pupils and other supporters flocked to the event.

Children gave impressive speeches on how important that this was going to be for them and their education.
Contracts were signed with the local authorities.
Heads of villages preformed Andean rituals to wish the school good luck.

Explaining details to interested parents

A small group of children have already stayed in the boarding school for a couple of days as a tryout.
In this way, they will know where they will be staying after the summer holidays.

At the same time, we know which start up problems need to be ironed out before the 30 children start in February 2011.

In the next 2 months the last details will be finished, such as a couple of pieces of furniture, playground, and funds allowing, a greenhouse.

Thanks to all the hardworking volunteers and all of you that made this possible!

Our next update will bring you news when the children are living there.

We wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,

Dirk & Sayda
Arjan & Lesley

November 2010

We have been travelling back and forward to Tahua every 2 to 3 weeks now.
It is a long 8 hour mainly off-road drive from Sucre.
We are checking on the workers progress and giving the last advice.
Friends, family and teachers are helping out to get the Boarding School ready for the OPENING on 27 November.
It is really taking shape.

More news later on the BIG DAY!!

October 2010

A big Thank You to the Dutch foundation Window to the World and its donors for its very generous support! Together with additional support from Wilde Ganzen, they raised an amazing EUR 6188 for Tahua. The rain at the Picnic in the Amsterdamse Bos did not deter anyone for supporting charity - it was a great success. It was a real family event where an auction, kids sponsored run, face painting etc. brought in funds for the boarding school.

Dennis Mulder is also applauded for, for helping out on the day on behalf of Stichting Tahua Boarding School. The funds from WttW will be used to finish off the plumbing, showers, toilets, electricity system and a large part of the playground.

We wish WttW's board members a wonderful and fruitful trip to Bolivia this week.

September 2010

Margaret and David White celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this year!
Friends and family who were invited to their party were told that Margaret and David preferred to support Boarding School Tahua than to receive gifts themselves.
They collected EUR 445 which goes towards the playground at the boarding school!

We thank them for their kind contribution.

Boarding School Tahua would like to thank Riksja travel for a spectacular amount of

EUR 14,265.66

Now the opening will be closer than expected!

Since 2009 the employees of Riksja Travel gather money for a charity project at one of their destinations. This year they choose to raise money for the Tahua project.

On Thursday the 27th of May at 7 pm a team of 6 people, started to walk 24 hours non stop.
At the same time their colleagues at the office in the Netherlands, Germany and Australia stopt eating for 24 hours. Everyone had found sponsors to support them.

Right after the start of the walk, it started to rain, but luckely the weather got better soon.
After a long night of walking, they arrived at the primary school in Vlaardingen which had raised money for the project, by doing a charity run.

Upon arrival the children were waiting for them at the schoolyard and a cheque was handed over to the team. The warm welcome at the school helped the team to continue their walk, because there 9 hours to go. At 7 pm they returned at the office of Riksja Travel, all with very stiff legs.

A tough trip, but because of the warm welcome from the other colleagues at the office, the pain was forgotten soon. The rest of the colleagues, who had done the 24-hours fasting were very hungry.

To celebrate the succesfull day, they all had a nice BBQ together.

We are thrilled to hear that the Catholic school “t Palet” from Vlaardingen, Holland organised a sponsored run to raise money for the Boarding School.
Have a look at this website photo book to see the children in action!

Also, at the end of May employees from the travel agency Riksja - Peru Online in Holland, Germany and Australia are organising an amazing 24 hour sponsored hike.

Other colleagues from the same company will be fasting the whole day too, all for the good cause!
We will be thinking of them!

We'll let you know what the proceeds have been of all the events when we have the information.

Thank you!

We would like to thank all donors in 2009.
With your support this year, there has been much activity at the building site in Tahua.
Sayda, Dirk, Lesley and Arjan wish you all a very happy and healthy 2010.
We would like to give a special thank you to Bunnik Travel in Australia and the Dutch foundation Stichting Belangenbehartiging voor het (zeer) Jonge Kind for their wonderful support in 2009.

November / December 2009: Action Packed

Just look how far it has progressed!

Window frames, glass and doors are in. Sayda coordinated the transport of beds, mattresses, tables and benches across dirt roads then over the salt lake.
All furniture arrived safely before Christmas at the Boarding school.

Even though the progress has been impressive, we have had a couple of set backs.
One of the main ones was that one of the builders had to quit the job after hearing that his teenage son had tragically died. Our thoughts go out to the builder and his family.

The large oven and stove for the kitchen has been delivered. Pots and pans, cutlery, plates etc have been bought and are stored in Sucre until the building is finished.

We are happy to be able to announce that the municipal of Tahua has promised to finance a part
of the construction of the other part of the Boarding school. A start has been made as you can see on the foto below. This means that we will be able to house an additional 30 children in the future. We had already made the foundation of these buildings so the work will be easier.

A start could even be made on the second wing with help from the local municipal

What still has to be done?

Paint all inside walls
Toilets and showers
Electricity
Plastering outside walls
Lay patio and paths between and around buildings
Floors in kitchen and bathrooms
Playground
The second wing for another 30 children
