Bebe and Beverly Hills 90210 team up for a new clothing line

January 25, 2011 | 11:16 am

90210
There's a new TV/clothing collab on the horizon (Glee and Gossip Girl jumped on that bandwagon long ago, and our own Booth Moore reported on the significant surge in TV/clothing collaborations). Bebe, the retailer who also has produced a line designed by the Kardashian sisters, has teamed up with CBS Consumer Products for a line called "Bebe for 90210" based on the CW show.

With a cast full of hot female leads, 90210 seems like a perfect fit for fashion branding. And the synergy is kicking into full gear by next week when fans of the show will get a sneak peak of a few of the outfits. On Jan. 31, Jessica Stroup, AnnaLynne McCord and Jessica Lowndes will be wearing pieces from the collection on the episode titled, "It's Getting Hot in Here" and again on the Feb. 7 episode.

The show's producers, wardrobe team and the Bebe creative team all have contributed to the look of the collection and plan to roll out the line of suiting, blouses, dresses and jumpsuits four times a year.

I only wish this had been done with the original cast of 90210, because who didn't want everything out of Donna Martin's closet?

The Bebe for 90210 collection will be available in Bebe stores and at bebe.com on Feb. 10 and ranges from $59 to $159.

L.A.'s John Eshaya to design collections for Hot Topic and Torrid

December 27, 2010 | 12:41 am

EshayaJohn Eshaya, founder of the contemporary Jet Clothing brand and former vice president of women's wear at Ron Herman, has signed on as the first name-brand designer to create collections for teen-focused retailer Hot Topic and its plus-size spin-off concept, Torrid, reports Women's Wear Daily.

L.A.-based Eshaya has inked a licensing agreement with Hot Topic Inc., and will design collections under the John Eshaya for Hot Topic label (which will be stocked in the chain's 650 Hot Topic stores) and the John Eshaya for Torrid label (hitting Torrid's 56 stores) in May.

This will be the first-ever licensing deal for Eshaya, who, during his tenure at Ron Herman, helped advance the popularity of California-based contemporary collections (lines priced just below designer collections) such as Citizens of Humanity and Juicy Couture.

The Hot Topic Inc. collections will start out small, he said, numbering seven to eight pieces each for the initial launches at Hot Topic and Torrid. Prices will be low — $40 and under at Hot Topic and $60 and under at Torrid.

Expect Eshaya's casual, easy-breezy sensibilities to be present in each line. A stand-out look for the Hot Topic collection will be a printed loose jersey tank top and wrap jacket ensemble; a key look for the Hot Topic line will be cropped sweatpants.

Opening Ceremony gets on the grid with 'Tron: Legacy' collaboration

December 9, 2010 |  3:15 pm

One of the most fun "Tron: Legacy"-inspired apparel collaborations we've seen to date (and the folks at Disney Consumer Products must have worked overtime on leveraging "Legacy" -- we've seen a lot of stuff out there) is the capsule collection with Opening Ceremony that dropped in mid-November.

The women's collection includes bomber jackets with oversized funnel necks, snug scuba shirts, bodice dresses and seamed leggings. The men's side includes biker jackets, patchwork poplin shirts and cargo pants.

The color palette uses shades of bright orange and royal blue that evoke the dominant accent colors of both the 1982 original and upcoming sequel (which hits theaters Dec. 17), as well as black and a vibrant shade of yellow, with a range of fabrics that include neoprene, Melton wool, twill, corduroy, and a form-fitting stretch spandex.

The 'Tron' armchair: a worthy throne for the Master Control Program on your grid

December 7, 2010 |  3:05 pm

Tron_chair
The latest high-end "Tron: Legacy" tie-in? A $15,000 designer armchair -- recently unveiled in Miami.

Inspired by the digital landscape that appears in the upcoming "Tron" movie, the armchairs were designed by New York based designer Dror Benshetrit for Cappellini in conjunction with Walt Disney Signature  -- the "adult lifestyle" branch of the Disney merchandising tree, which in addition to fashion collaborations such as Sue Wong dresses and Stella McCartney jewelry, licenses things such as wallpaper, light fixtures and furniture.

The solid-looking chairs are made of hand-layered fiberglass and polyester resin and have a mix of angular and undulating lines that at first glance might remind you of the Frank Gehry designed Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles.

Each of the armchairs is hand-finished, based on a gray background and accented with varying degrees of orange and white accent colors -- the coolest-looking ones bear just a single diagonal slash of what looks like orange or white paint that looks as if it was left behind by a speeding Light Cycle.

If you like the look but not the price, you might still have a chance to jack into the grid -- plans include a mass-produced version of the chair (made from 100% recycled roto-molded plastic), which will make its official debut at the Milan International Furniture Show in April 2011.

The special production armchairs, which cost $15,000 each, were unveiled as part of Design Miami 2010 and will be on display at the Cappellini/Poltrona Frau Miami showroom, 10 N.E. 39th St., Miami, until Friday.

ToyWatch and Missoni team up to make colorful watches

November 30, 2010 | 10:00 am

Missonitoywatch
Sporty gets a high end-makeover with a new collaboration between ToyWatch and Missoni. The unlikely pairing called “ToyWatch Dressed by Missoni” has resulted in two styles of watches that are whimsical, functional and incorporate Missoni’s signature knits.

The two styles are both $445 (not bad considering a Missoni bikini is about the same price and contains less fabric) and come with a colorful ToyWatch face connected to either a knit band with a double leather buckle closure or a knit with a vibrant silk scarf tie closure.

Both styles wrap around the wrist and definitely make a bright, style statement that may not fit in with your cold weather gear, but would look great with an all-white flowy ensemble or a bathing suit, if you’re lucky enough to go somewhere warm in the next few months.

ToyWatch Dressed by Missoni limited-edition watches hit stores the first week of December and will be available at Missoni boutiques and www.toywatch.com

Your morning fashion and beauty report: American Music Awards styles ranged from elegant to strange

November 22, 2010 |  8:44 am

AMA

Another day, another red carpet. Sunday it was the American Music Awards, which were kind of tame (given that some usual pot-stirrers, such as Lady Gaga and Kanye West, weren't there.) But red-carpet watchers could see Taylor Swift in a sparkly cocktail dress, Rihanna in an elegant peekaboo Elie Saab Haute Couture Gown, Miley Cyrus (above) in a white Marchesa mini with a really strange long train (she kind of looked to me like a mummy unraveling) and much more. [People]

You're probably about to spend more time in a mall, or strolling through boutiques, than you do all year. To keep from spending money on purchases you'll regret, read up on the psychology of shopping in our Health section. Forewarned is forearmed.

Lanvin's H&M collection went on sale in 24 stores around the U.S. on Saturday, and from the looks of the lines queued up to get in you would have thought it was "Harry Potter's" latest premiere. At H&M's Fifth Avenue store, 300 shoppers waited in line, reportedly for as long as 13 hours. [The Cut]

Forever 21 launches a Minnie Mouse-themed collection with Disney

November 18, 2010 | 10:52 am

Minnie Forever 21 was all ears (mouse ears, that is) Tuesday night as it toasted its new collaboration with Disney, Minnie Muse, with a party at its Hollywood and Highland store.

The fast-fashion chain invited 300 of their top Los Angeles-area customers to mingle with celebrities including Bella Thorne and Zendaya Coleman from Disney Channel’s new series "Shake It Upand J. Alexander, a.k.a. Miss J from "America’s Next Top Model."

Disney artist John Quinn, who conceived the line's toothpick-thin mouse-as-muse, Skinny Minnie, whipped up drawings for guests in the back of the store, while attendees accosted a candy bar. (A gaggle of giddy girls nearly mobbed Miss J., begging for photos with the host and runway coach — he had to retreat to a VIP room periodically).

The limited edition collection, which is comprised of 41 looks  priced under $30 will be in stores "until it sells out," said Forever 21's senior vice president Betsey Zanjani, who added that she was initially hesitant to collaborate with Disney, because it felt "too kids."

But she ultimately fell for Quinn's fashion-forward mouse, which he drew for her in their very first meeting.

IMG_4760 The cute collection features cardigans, tops, jackets, leggings and a bevy of accessories, all emblazoned with either the illustrated Skinny Minnie or a spare graphic black mouse head sporting a bow on its head.

The line rolled out to 250 Forever 21 doors Wednesday, but you can also get your mouse online in the coming week.

Collaboration Nation: Burton Snowboards gives 'Tron' the boot

November 15, 2010 | 11:30 am

It appears that not even the snowy mountain slopes will be safe from "Tron: Legacy" merchandise mania this winter. Burton Snowboards is selling a version of its Raptor snowboarding boot inspired by the Rage_tron upcoming film.

The boots are black with a holographic-style treatment on the upper part and pops of blue accent (including blue contrast stitching on the straps). Twin trails of orange zigzag across the upper cuff and side of the foot.

The result is sleek and retro sci-fi. I'm half tempted to pick up a pair for myself -- even though I've never snowboarded in my life (and I've only seen the original "Tron" once).

Although it may seem like an incongrous combination, both have their roots planted firmly in 1982.

In addition to being the year the original "Tron" movie hit theaters, 1982 was the year the fledgling sport -- and Jake Burton Carpenter's young Vermont-based snowboard-making company with it -- really hit the public consciousness.

Vermont's ski mountains began to allow snowboarders to hit their slopes that year, and it was in 1982 that the first U.S. Open Snowboarding Championships were held (also in Vermont), an event sponsored then -- as now -- by Burton Snowboards.

The "Tron: Legacy" snowboard boots are available at select Burton retailers and online at Burton's website for a suggested retail price of $269.95.

Hurley's 'Tron' togs zip into PacSun Nov. 19

November 12, 2010 |  3:00 pm

Rage_hurley

Apparel- and accessory-wise, Disney seems to be giving "Tron: Legacy" the "Alice in Wonderland" treatment -- pairing with designers and clothing brands that key in on every possible demographic and price point.

Last month, we told you about the jewelry, and earlier this month we noted the "Tron"-themed pop-up store at Royal/T in Culver City. Now we've finally got some more details on Hurley's "Tron: Legacy"- inspired capsule collection of men's and women's apparel that's zipping into select PacSun stores on Nov. 19. The clothes will be sold exclusively in those stores until widening retail distribution on Dec. 5. (The actual movie bows at theaters on Dec. 17.)

The collection, which will range in price from $29 to $129, includes the usual action-sports assortment of board shorts, T-shirts, denim, hoodies, lightweight outerwear pieces and New Era caps for both men and women, as well as some featherweight tank-tops and dresses -- and even a bikini -- for women.

Most of the pieces are black (with a few white pieces thrown in) with accent piping and screenprinting in the signature shades of blue or orange associated with the film.

Blanket coverage: Levi's X Pendleton collaboration hits stores Nov. 8

November 4, 2010 |  1:36 pm

Levi x pendleton
The latest wardrobe mashup from collaboration-crazy Levi Strauss & Co. is with Pendleton Woolen Mills, a sixth-generation, family-owned brand that's been part of the fabric of America nearly as long as the jeans maker.

The Portland, Ore.-based blanket maker, which traces its roots back to 1909, has created an exclusive Native American inspired geometric "Levi's Jacquard" pattern in shades of indigo, red and gold (meant to symbolize the colors found in a pair of Levi's jeans) that will appear on linings and accents of the seven-piece Levi's Workwear by Pendleton capsule collection that will be priced from $118 to $238.

Pieces include two men's jackets -- a trucker jacket with a removable jacquard-print vest, and a western jacket with wool panels and hand-warming pockets --  and two women's jackets -- a convertible trucker jacket with a detachable, thigh-length, hooded Pendleton wrap and a more feminine, fitted version of the men's jacquard print jacket.

The clothing assortment is rounded out with a women's wool cape and men's work shirt. In addition, a limited number of special-edition blankets featuring the exclusive Levi's jacquard design will also be sold. The heavyweight wool blankets will include a cotton wrap with indigo whip-stitch edging and will be packaged in a commemorative box.

Neither brand has been shy about riding the collaboration train lately, Levi's X Billy Reid, Levi's X Brooks Brothers and Levi's X Obey among the recent ones for Levi Strauss, and collaborations with Vans and Opening Ceremony among those for Pendleton (and a new Pendleton X Hurley collection we'll tell you about as soon as we get more details).

Items from the collection will be sold through all Levi's stores (including L.A.-area locations) as well as a handful of Pendleton stores. The capsule collection will also be e-tailed through the companies' respective websites (levis.com and pendleton-usa.com) starting Nov. 8.

Model Jessica Stam designs a line for RACHEL Rachel Roy

September 29, 2010 |  7:59 am

Stamrachelroy

There’s undoubtedly a current obsession with the “model off duty” look. Every style website and blog has a section dedicated to the slightly disheveled and understated glam look that supermodels don when not walking the runway. And more and more models are coming out with clothing lines (most recently Claudia Schiffer, and don’t forget Erin Wasson’s jewelry or Kate Moss’ soon-to-be defunct line for Top Shop).

Now model Jessica Stam has collaborated with designer Rachel Roy,  designing a four-piece collection for Roy’s lower-priced line RACHEL Rachel Roy carried at Macy’s. The handful of pieces, consisting of an army-inspired belt, a chain-strap bucket bag, a check print cardigan and black skinny jeans, launches Wednesday in Macy’s stores and on rachelroy.com

“I have always loved Jessica’s unique look off the runway," Roy says. "Her sharp eye for trends lead to the design aesthetic for this limited collection.”

They are certainly cute and basic staple items, which unlike other model-designed clothing out there (Kate Moss) may look as flattering on mere mortals as they do on supermodels.

The Jessica Stam for RACHEL Rachel Roy collection ranges from $49 for the belt to $199 for the bag.
