Twiggy, Sean Combs, Gwen Stefani design tree ornaments to benefit St. Jude's

November 11, 2010 |  7:28 am

Gwen Stefani You could trim this year's Christmas pine with a box of drugstore-bought candy canes, or you could trick out your tree with ornaments designed by celebrities to benefit a good cause.

Shopping network HSN recently debuted its heART HSN 2010 Designer Ornament collection — a 70-plus piece collection of ornaments designed by notables including Sean Combs, Padma Lakshmi, Molly Sims, Tori Spelling, Sarah Jessica Parker and Gwen Stefani.

All profits from the collection — that's 30% of the purchase price — benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The designs range from the wacky (Emeril Lagasse's has a radish on it; Iman's bears a portrait of her dressed up like Mrs. Claus) to the eye-popping (Twiggy's features a glittering Union Jack graphic) to the sweetly chic — Sarah Jessica Parker's round bauble is swathed in printed fabrics and topped with a darling hot-pink bow.

SJP “Through the sale of these exclusive heART ornaments during the holidays, HSN will once again help St. Jude in the fight against childhood cancer and other catastrophic diseases," said Marlo Thomas, national outreach director for St. Jude. "Everyone who buys one of these beautiful ornaments will be giving hope to the precious children who are fighting for their lives.”

Ornaments range in price from $19.90 to $49.90, with a single swanky ornament designed by fashion designer Naeem Khan and covered in Swarovski crystals ringing in at $299.

Since the ornament initiative began in 2005, HSN customers have raised approximately $3 million in support of St. Jude.

Your morning fashion and beauty report: 'Project Runway' judges make 'toughest decision' ever. Now you have to decide on a Halloween costume.

"Project Runway" closed out its season Thursday night with judges making what host Heidi Klum called the "toughest decision in 'Project Runway' history." After much debate over the merits of the three remaining finalists -- Gretchen Jones, Mondo Guerra and Andy South -- judges named Jones as the top designer, saying the 28-year-old Oregonian's collection was the most "sellable" and the most on-trend. I'm pretty sure we'll be hearing more from all of them, though. [CBS]

"What Not to Wear" returns Friday night for its eighth season on TLC. If you haven't seen it, it's worth a look. The basic philosophy, according to Los Angeles Times' television critic Robert Lloyd, is that there are no ugly women, only ugly clothes, and by changing your clothes you can change yourself. The episode begins at 9 p.m. PDT. [Los Angeles Times]

I love it when Halloween falls on a weekend. More time to get into the spirit; more opportunities to wear costumes. Some women I know plan to start Friday and change costumes daily (or maybe even twice a day) through Sunday. We know that one of this year's popular looks will be Snooki of "Jersey Shore." But what, you may be wondering, will Snooki wear? Reports are that it's -- drum roll -- a pickle costume. A short, tight, sexy pickle costume, of course, complete with a light-up, pickle-shaped scepter. [WWD]

Meanwhile, Ellen DeGeneres plans to start the weekend by going on-air Friday dressed as Snooki's trademark pouf -- that's right, she's going to be a big fluff of hair. [People]

If you're still looking for costume ideas, Heidi Klum has tons of them for couples and for kids. Some pretty creative stuff. She and husband Seal once decked themselves out as a snake-wrapped apple (Heidi) and blond-wigged Eve (Seal). [StyleList]

Celeb designer of the day: Mariah Carey plans to launch her first "lifestyle" line on HSN Nov. 29. It will feature jewelry, footwear and fragrance. [WWD]

"Mad Men" costume designer Janie Bryant was guest of honor at a Maybelline-sponsored party in New York celebrating her new book, "The Fashion File: Advice, Tips and Inspiration from the Costume Designer of 'Mad Men.'" [StyleList]

Your morning fashion and beauty report: Meghan McCain dishes on style, politics, Palin. Or forget politics, celebrate 90210 Day.

September 2, 2010 |  9:03 am

Meghan
Meghan McCain, daughter of presidential contender John, has a new memoir out about the campaign, "Dirty, Sexy Politics." Though there's not much dirt or sex (she says she swore off the latter for the duration), there are, All the Rage is happy to note, some style and beauty insights of a political nature. For instance, image consultants redid her "stripper"-blond hair and dulled down her wardrobe, then billed the campaign. During the convention, Meghan was turned away by a makeup artist busy with the Palin offspring, whom she was told would "get more air time."  She thought Sarah Palin was the most beautiful politician she'd ever seen but also that she seemed to be interested in her own ambitions more than McCain's. OK, maybe that is a little bit of dirt! [Washington Post]

It's 90210 Day. Really. (Sept. 2, 2010, if you're still one cup shy of your morning caffeine.)  And it's giving die-hard fans of the show set in the Beverly Hills Zip Code some giggles. Now, guys, if the girl in your life is hooked on the modern version of the show, you can find the perfect gift for her, thanks to the CW, which, like some other smart networks, is selling some of the characters' "looks." This morning, for instance, I found Adrianna's snake bracelet on sale for $95, Naomi's gray Bridgette purse for $599 and Silver's chain lariat necklace-and-earring set for $20. [The CW]

Brow expert Anastasia Soare, among red-carpet beauty experts featured in the Los Angeles Times on Sunday, also is marking 9-02-2010 by appearing on HSN to sell her brow kits. She is scheduled to air at 10 a.m and 2 and 8 p.m., Eastern Daylight Time. [StyleList]

Looking forward to the holidays, fashion house Lanvin has announced a onetime collaboration with fast-fashion retailer H&M, due to hit stores in November. [WWD] (Subscription required.)

Madame Tussaud's [updated 11:33 a.m. Sept.2] Washington museum just unveiled a wax figure of Rihanna, clad in a glamorous peekaboo black outfit with plenty of bling. They nailed her style! [FabSugar]

A host of designers have won nominations for the British Fashion Awards, including Christopher Bailey of Burberry, Erdem Moralioglu and Victoria Beckham. [WWD]

French Vogue is putting out a plus-sized issue in October, marking it's 90th anniversary. Ad pages are up 100% over last October, and the hefty magazine will come bundled with archival photos on heavy stock as a little extra for buyers. [NY Observer]

Patricia Field's new looks for HSN: Would Carrie approve? Yes

September 25, 2008 | 10:31 am

368568 You now own a corsage and know that Manolo is not a Spanish dessert.  Yes, "Sex and the City" designer Patricia Field taught you plenty about fashion and taking risks and spending way too much money. Now, her new line, "Destination Style," is finally available on368606 HSN. And guess what? It's kind of slutty, sort of cute and definitely not for everyone -- a lot like Field herself.
The fave? This scoop neck floral tiered ruffle dress, left, that works with ballet flats or pumps. I love the colors and the silhouette. Pair it with a black leather jacket or cropped cardigan, ($129.90)  There is a matching coat that should not be seen within a mile of this368119 dress. Pick one or the other.

Her skinny black jeans, upper right, which, blessedly, go up to a size 39, sell for $49.90 and would work well with an oversized men's oxford and pumps.

The yikes? This jumbo corsage dress at right  ($149.90) that screams, "I am Carrie! Get me a cosmo!" I wish that Field didn't repeat herself and resort to merchandising a look so associated with the TV show and movie. What I like about Field is that 369693she encourages women to try a new look or play with an accessory. The better bet is this corsage belt, ($29.90) -- which feels very Chanel -- and is more of a wink, rather than a full blown bow, to Carrie Bradshaw's inimitable style.
