Your morning fashion and beauty report: The scoop on Willow Smith's hair, Katy Perry's nuptial nose ring and Maria Sharapova's engagement to Sasha Vujacic.

October 22, 2010 | 11:32 am

Awillow
In her much-buzzed-about video "Whip My Hair," 9-year-old Willow Smith sings, dances and shows off numerous hair styles, from braids to twists to a faux mohawk. Creating all of them was fun, says hairdresser Marcia Hamilton. Of course, Willow and mom Jada Pinkett-Smith had input. The most challenging was a faux 'hawk shaped like a heart sticking up from Willow's head. Kids, it's OK to try this at home! [People]

Looks we love: Scarlett Johansson's short tousled bob. She can wear it messy or sleekly coiffed and it looks chic in a way longer hair just doesn't. [People]

And -- I guess hair is the topic that has All the Rage's attention right now -- Julianne Moore wore a style we're seeing a lot of when she attended a screening of "Let Me In" in Abu Dhabi this week: a soft topknot pulled to the crown of her head. It's easy to copy and will be a good look for holiday parties later this season. [InStyle]

When Katy Perry and Russell Brand arrived in Jaipur, where they are expected to wed this weekend, the bride-to-be was sporting a traditional Indian nuptial nose ring. By custom, the bride wears the ring throughout her wedding day until the groom removes it that night. We're hoping to tell you more next week about what the couple wears for the ceremony. The only problem: they've hinted (joked?) that it could be a clothing-optional event. I dunno. I can't quite see a fashion-forward girl like Katy not pulling out all the stops when it comes to wedding finery. [People]

More pending nuptials: beautiful (and well-dressed) tennis star Maria Sharapova is engaged to the Lakers' Sasha Vujacic, who reportedly popped the question Tuesday night. [Yahoo Sports]

Frugal Fashion: Claudia Schiffer gets nautical at Chanel

October 20, 2010 |  7:00 am

L9thjtnc Claudia Schiffer has been one of Karl Lagerfeld’s favorites since she started modeling for Chanel at the age of 17. She rocked the catwalk during Chanel's 1990 haute couture show, then starred in the brand's ad campaigns in 1994, 2008 and 2010. Whether it's some form of fashion osmosis from an excessive exposure to the world’s finest clothing or an innate ability to look glamorous in anything, the 40-year-old mother of three is looking better than ever.

At Chanel's spring-summer 2011 runway show during Paris Fashion Week, the German model ditched the runway for a seat in the audience but managed to yet again capture the selective eyes of the fashion world. In a blue-and-white striped nautical boat neck sweater and dark blue skinny jeans, Schiffer was casual but refined enough for a Chanel runway show attendee. Her over-the-knee brown boots added some height and dressed up the ensemble. She looks ready to step off the runway and onto the shiny slick streets of fall or winter.

Sweater For this week's frugal alternatives we’re leaving out the denim. Schiffer's look will work with any pair of dark skinny jeans you might already have, so no need to waste your money there. To get her nautical striped look, get cozy in Tommy Hilfiger's navy-and-white striped boat neck sweater from Macy's for $59.50. The Hilfiger version has super cute buttons that run along the left side of the sweater, and the sleeves feature a patriotic tipped red hem.

Boots For some great brown fall boots of your own, snag these suedette brown, over-the-knee boots from Forever 21 for $34.80. They have an inner zipper and slit in the back for extra comfort. Be sure to check out resident stylist Melissa Magsaysay's expert tips for getting your fall boots to fit just right.

The grand total for this week, before taxes, is $94.30. These frugal finds should last a couple seasons with a sweater you can wear all year long and boots that can take your feet from fall through winter and into spring.

Happy shopping.

Have an outfit you're dying to buy, but need a frugal alternative? E-mail us a picture. We're up for the challenge.

New York Fashion Week: Hilfiger goes over the hedge

September 14, 2010 | 10:48 am

Rage_hilfiger_ss11

Tommy Hilfiger's last runway show here symbolically and nostalgically closed out New York Fashion Week's run at Bryant Park, and his spring-summer 2011 mens' and women's collections, presented on the runways at Lincoln Center on Sunday night was another symbol -- but about the future.

"We look forward to sharing the next 25 years with you," said a voice (presumably Hilfiger's) over the loudspeaker at the start of the show, which was packed with celebrity attendees including Jennifer Lopez, Bradley Cooper, Christina Hendricks and Neil Patrick Harris (sitting left to right in that order, by the way).

The top of the runway was dominated by ivy-covered arches evocative of the cover shot from "Take Ivy," photographer Teruyoshi Hayashida's 1965 book of photos that captured Ivy League campus style (and that was reissued in August 2010), and the show invitations had arrived nestled in a box with a thatch of faux ivy hedge, but once the show started, it was clear that Hilfiger was taking his notion of prep beyond -- make that over -- the hedge.

Your morning fashion and beauty report: Philip Treacy hats inspire 'Project Runway.' Miss Universe costume capers. Chrissie Hynde's fruitful romance.

August 20, 2010 |  8:25 am

Chrissie

We've been on the bandwagon about the return of hats for some time now, and on Thursday night, "Project Runway" jumped on too with a challenge inspired by sublime Philip Treacy headwear. [EW]

The Miss Universe contest will be taped in Las Vegas next week, and maybe it's the Vegas ultra-glitz, uber-tacky influence but the national costumes the contestants will parade in are causing some flaps back home. A British beefeater wearing wet-look leggings? Miss USA as the presidential seal? Miss Australia in a get-up described as "a dingo's breakfast?" It won't be fashion, but at least it should be entertaining. [Telegraph]

Model Miranda Kerr, a.k.a. Mrs. Orlando Bloom, is expecting. What does this have to do with fashion (as opposed to my crush on all things Orlando)? Um, we can expect to see her wearing some cute maternity clothes in the next few months! [StyleList]

Your morning fashion and beauty report: Katy Perry is adorable at Teen Choice Awards, Marc Jacobs gives a revealing interview to Calvin Klein and good news for bridal gown seekers

-- Good news for finicky brides-to-be: The Aisle New York, a luxury e-commerce site set to launch next month, will offer gowns in premium price ranges. Think Oscar de la Renta, Marchesa and Monique Lhuillier. [WWD] (Subscription required.)

-- Katy Perry kept things moving as host of the Teen Choice Awards, broadcast Monday night, with numerous looks from cheerleader to goth to prom queen to geek (complete with orthodontic headgear!). She also showed her glam side in a sparkly bandage dress. While Lady Gaga gets lots of attention for her outre looks, I have to say I appreciate Katy's relatable humor, surprise and grace. [People] (Our sister blog, The Envelope, has its own take on the award show.)

-- Meet Shena Moulton: Almost 6 feet tall, and only 16, the Jamaican beauty has already walked runways for Marc by Marc Jacobs, Isaac Mizrahi, Calvin Klein and Louis Vuitton. Oh, and she just got her ears pierced. [WWD]

-- Calvin Klein, no stranger to provocative advertising, interviews Marc Jacobs in the Harper's Bazaar September issue about that naughty ad for Bang, the one in which only a strategically placed bottle of the scent protects Mr. Jacobs', um, modesty. It turns out -- surprise! -- Jacobs likes being naked since he went on a health and fitness kick a few years ago. But the designer stripped down for the ad because the photographer asked him to. Tommy Hilfiger celebrates 25 years of style, five decades (plus) of life with coffee table tome

August 6, 2010 |  2:54 pm

Hilfigerjpg
Tommy Hilfiger is celebrating its 25th anniversary in fashion (yeah, I’m feeling kinda old too) by producing 1,000 handmade, limited-edition books.  Presented in a linen box (perfect to accessorize any Nantucket coffee table), the book's cover bears the label’s iconic flag in bold red and blue bordered with genuine gold stitching.

"Tommy Hilfiger," by Tommy Hilfiger has a scrapbook vibe.  Handwritten narrated images and quotes from gals like Anna Wintour and Britney Spears add a funky freshness to the pages. “This book is a culmination of my life’s work, sharing some of my innermost thoughts throughout the years…. [It’s] the equivalent of telling a friend about my family,”  says the designer.

You’ll learn many things about the man from Elmira, N.Y., that’ll surprise you.  A psychic named Zvia who charted his future.  A Madison Square Garden show with British rockers Bush headlining (Gavin Rossdale in Hilfiger! What would Gwen say?) Forget that Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones were kitted out in his gear in 1999 when he sponsored their “No Security Tour.” I guess it’s not always yachts and chiseled faces that wave his eponymous flag.

Previewing the book, I was fascinated by intimate, personal photos.  On the flip side, I felt it was missing content with gutsy grit.  When thinking of Hilfiger, it’s hard to forget the 59-year-old designer has had some serious fashion highs (in 1995 winning CFDA Menswear Designer of the year) and major lows (overexposure, so much so that you could buy a Hilfiger T-shirt or jeans from Costco). For those looking to gain insight into the workings of the label, this doesn’t delve much deeper than a man looking back at his five decades with  delight. At $550, this 144-page tome (featuring 200 illustrations, 65 which are hand- tipped) is probably for his most devout fans.  Though I will say, after reading Hilfiger’s goal to see his brand as the quintessential American dream, and then flicking through his retrospective of campaigns, he nails it. “America the Beautiful,” is an understatement.

First Look: 'Sex and the City 2'

May 14, 2010 | 11:18 am

Rage_sex_city
It's good! It's actually good, and costume designer Pat Field's talents are in top form, making the 2 1/2 hour film, which opens May 27, worth seeing, even if it is too cutesy and self-aware at times. Really, just seeing the stylish foursome arriving in Abu Dhabi is worth it. Think gold sequin harem pants, a striped satin turban and a monogrammed train case.

I just hope this film doesn't cause an international incident with its commentary on Middle East fashion politics. How bare is too bare? Is kissing in public really illegal? And how do women eat French fries while wearing burkas anyway?

For spring 2010, Hilfiger takes a classic stroll down by the boardwalk

September 20, 2009 |  9:16 am

New York's Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week officially wrapped Thursday night, and even though I've spent most of the time since wending my way back to Los Angeles, I couldn't enjoy the weekend without mentioning the closing show: Tommy Hilfiger, who sent a classy-looking collection down the runway in the Bryant Park tents (and, it turned out, would also appear as one of the guest judges on that evening's episode of "Project Runway").HILFIGER_WCFS10_421

According to the show notes -- which were provided on sturdy pieces of wood about the thickness of a place mat -- Hilfiger was "re-imagin[ing] the relaxed glamor of a Southern California boardwalk," right down to the wooden boards that formed the runway.

The clothes were so breezy and effortless -- especially the women's pieces; the strapless silk corset dresses flounced just so and the silk jersey gowns had an elegant drape to them -- that he needn't have bothered with the small birch forest of assorted wood accents. (The one upside was that the run-of-show provided a stable platform for my Flip video camera, and I was able to capture the collection from a pretty good vantage point.)

Like many of the collections last week, Hilfiger's drew inspiration from the oceans, such as navy double-breasted suit coats with gold buttons and blue-on-white nautical stripes of the sea-faring class, and a color palette that included a range of striking blues and the pale peach-and-pink hues one might see from the Santa Monica Pier as the sun dips into the Pacific.

HILFIGER_WCFS10_088

The men's collection felt less elegant but was equally as visually striking; brightly colored pieces -- a cobalt blue jacket here, a tomato-red pair of trousers there -- were paired with more neutral khaki, perhaps trying to telegraph the idea of a "California casual" wardrobe.

The front row was packed with celebrities -- many of them no doubt had attended the opening shindig at the new Tommy Hilfiger flagship store on Fifth Avenue a few hours before the show. On my way out the door I saw Rosario Dawson and Russell Simmons, to name just two.

But the belle of the ball clearly was Girl Interrupted Taylor Swift, who earlier in the week had been a victim of Kanye West's VMA invective. She stood in the midst of a throng of shutterbugs -- professional and otherwise -- in a red Tommy Hilfiger dress.

"Is this your first show this week?" I asked.

"My first show ever!" she replied flashing a wide, genuine smile right before disappearing into the paparazzi knot.

And with that, the books closed on another season in the Bryant Park tents.
