Gilt Groupe’s Celebrity Stylist Series starts Friday

January 28, 2011 |  8:00 am

Celebrity stylists are still all the rage. Everyone either has a stylist or wants to be one (a place called the School of Style just opened in L.A and N.Y. for wannabe stylists to learn some tricks of the trade). And labels like Theory have put stylists front and center, leveraging the brand with notable stylist names for ad campaigns and look books.

The reach and influence of celebrity stylists show no signs of stopping. Case in point: Gilt Groupe’s new feature called Celebrity Style Series, which starts Friday at 9 a.m. PST. The website has tapped several celeb stylists to conceptualize their own theme for a sale and style on 7-9 looks from various vendors to sell online for 36 hours (the duration all Gilt sales generally last).

The first stylist up is Lee Harris, best known for dressing Drew Barrymore in glam, but more often offbeat ensembles.  He also shares his styling tips, wardrobe essentials and what makes a successful red carpet moment, as seen in the video above.

A new celebrity stylist will appear with a sale the last Friday of each month. So watch for your favorite image maker to appear on screen soon -– with a slew of clothes to sell at sample sale prices, natch.

Juicy Couture channels Laurel Canyon in its spring 2011 ad campaign

January 27, 2011 | 10:00 am

JC_SS_11
We’ll be seeing quite a few ad campaigns shot in and inspired by the L.A landscape and its history come spring. As we mentioned recently, J Crew shot its entire spring catalog at various L.A landmarks and styled its wares with an old Hollywood twist. And Juicy Couture’s campaign channels a dreamy Laurel Canyon of the 1970s.

Originally an L.A-based brand (and now owned by the N.Y.-based Liz Claiborne), Juicy Couture tapped into its West Coast roots to conceptualize the bohemian feeling of Laurel Canyon. The ad was shot by Steven Meisel in New York City rather than in L.A, and though the floppy hats, acoustic guitars and crochet details certainly nail the era and locale, you can’t really fake that golden Southern California light.

Bebe and Beverly Hills 90210 team up for a new clothing line

January 25, 2011 | 11:16 am

90210
There's a new TV/clothing collab on the horizon (Glee and Gossip Girl jumped on that bandwagon long ago, and our own Booth Moore reported on the significant surge in TV/clothing collaborations). Bebe, the retailer who also has produced a line designed by the Kardashian sisters, has teamed up with CBS Consumer Products for a line called "Bebe for 90210" based on the CW show.

With a cast full of hot female leads, 90210 seems like a perfect fit for fashion branding. And the synergy is kicking into full gear by next week when fans of the show will get a sneak peak of a few of the outfits. On Jan. 31, Jessica Stroup, AnnaLynne McCord and Jessica Lowndes will be wearing pieces from the collection on the episode titled, "It's Getting Hot in Here" and again on the Feb. 7 episode.

The show's producers, wardrobe team and the Bebe creative team all have contributed to the look of the collection and plan to roll out the line of suiting, blouses, dresses and jumpsuits four times a year.

I only wish this had been done with the original cast of 90210, because who didn't want everything out of Donna Martin's closet?

The Bebe for 90210 collection will be available in Bebe stores and at bebe.com on Feb. 10 and ranges from $59 to $159.

Your Stylist: Cute and cropped pants for spring

January 24, 2011 | 10:16 am

Image stylist and market editor Melissa Magsaysay soothes your sartorial woes in the weekly Your Stylist post.

Audrey Hepburn photo from Star Style (Angel City Press, 1995), by Patty Fox
In this installment of Your Stylist, we address another trend in denim besides the '70s-style flare. Cropped, 1950s-length pants, à la gamine Audrey Hepburn, are as big a trend as bell bottoms this season, and they're chic and feminine. Crop

Brands such as Current Elliott, MiH Jeans, J Brand and James Jeans are making obviously cropped-length pants that look great with a demure ballet flat or a low kitten heel.

Current Elliott is making a style called the Pony Boy crop that is unmistakably above the ankle. The length looks so great with a nautical striped top, slouchy T-shirt or even a short-sleeved girlie blouse.

J Brand is making a style called the Gigi with a kicky flare at the bottom that feels fun and quirky.

MiH Jeans has the Paris jean, which looks fresh in white, especially with a soft-colored blouse and a cute pair of flats; they'd look great on vacation with a colorful top and pair of flat sandals in brown or metallic leather. Jeans

Because this length of pant can cut off the silhouette, play with proportions. Someone who is 6 feet tall can get away with showing a good amount of ankle. A shorter woman needs to think about extending the fabric -- without losing the cropped style. And remember not to wear this kind of pant like a legging even though it’s slim and tailored. Tops and jackets should hit at the top of the hip, not cover the hips and behind. You might even want to try pairing cropped pants with a body suit or tucking in your top to really play up the super-feminine and polished appeal.  Crop2

So this spring, if the '70s aren’t a decade you feel like repeating, and flared legs aren’t your bag, think about a more form-fitting, tailored look and try on a pair of cropped, above-the-ankle-length pants for that confident and pixie-like feel reminiscent of Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot and Jackie O.

Barks and Botox at the Peninsula hotel

January 21, 2011 | 12:51 pm

GettyImages_108211735_Dianewarren
It wasn't your typical Thursday night event at the posh Peninsula hotel in Beverly Hills. Sure, there were plenty of well-heeled socialites and celebrities drinking wine and bidding on silent auction items, but mingling among them were several shelter dogs in need of a home, shaking in the arms of women who cradled them like babies.

"Barks and Botox" was a charity event held in one of the elegant ballrooms of the hotel, hosted by Beverly Hills facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Davis Nguyen and drew a crowd of a couple hundred people, many patients of Nguyen, who came to support the Animal Advocates Alliance.

Songwriter (and recent Golden Globes winner) Diane Warren, singer Taylor Dayne and actress Kathrine Narducci, attended, as well as a slew of people interested in possibly adopting a dog or cat through the Animal Advocates Alliance or, at the very least, to learn about the animals waiting for homes.

It probably didn't hurt that Nguyen added a little incentive to help boost adoptions -- for every animal adopted through the charity, he will donate Botox services to the new pet owner.

"A friend of mine is such a fervent warrior for animals, and I've been so impressed with her level of compassion for this organization," says Nguyen, who is also double boarded and an ear, nose and throat doctor in addition to perfecting the faces of some of Beverly Hills' most well-pampered people. "Tonight it's all about the animals."

J. Crew channels Old Hollywood with spring catalog shot entirely at L.A landmarks

January 19, 2011 | 10:00 am

SP11_126_A
When the team shooting J. Crew’s spring 2011 catalog set up at the Hollywood sign in early December to snap a leggy model wearing a pair of shiny gold shorts in front of the landmark, no one was expecting that the scene would turn into something out of "Law & Order: Los Angeles."

"A fireman walked into the shot, and all of a sudden over loudspeakers someone started yelling at us to leave because we were trespassing," said Ashley Price, a senior vice president at J. Crew who had been on set high up in the Hollywood Hills that day. The crew had secured a permit to shoot, and the reprimand was merely a miscommunication, but by chance a fireman in all his gear and a low-flying helicopter made it into a few of the shots. "You can’t get more L.A than that!" Price said.

The New York-based company known for its studio-set catalogs full of elegantly disheveled models and quirky tomboy styling, sought out the sunny backdrop of L.A to showcase its spring 2011 collection. To channel the era of Old Hollywood, actor Sam Page, from "Mad Men," was chosen to model the men’s collection, and locations such as the Chateau Marmont; the Downtown Palace Theatre; the Stahl House, by architect Pierre Koenig; the Paramount Studios back lot; and tree-lined North Hillcrest Road served as backdrops.

“We were inspired by the idea of Old Hollywood glamour and tying that into American classics, and we’ve been looking at L.A more for a point of view on glamour,” said Jenna Lyons, president and executive creative director of J. Crew. “We’re making things look a little more polished, things like the hair, makeup and styling. It’s definitely an over-arching theme for styling.”

Crew Cuts, J. Crew’s kids' collection was shot on the Paramount lot to utilize the whimsical sets and outrageous props. “There are those funny extremes you can have nowhere else but in L.A.,” Lyons said.

But the crew said perhaps the most Hollywood of all the locations was the Chateau Marmont. “Within an hour at the Chateau Marmont, we saw three celebrities,” Price said. “That felt very glamorous and very L.A."

The J. Crew Spring 2011 catalog will be out the end of January.

New online resources for the stylish bride-to-be [Updated]

January 18, 2011 |  3:41 pm

Shopbopbridal Have about 10 or so taffeta bridesmaids gowns been collecting dust in the garage? Or are you a youthful and super stylish bride-to-be who has been perusing bridal dress websites online and just can’t find anything but the usual strapless, poufy and generic looking gown with accessories that are a total snooze fest or too reminiscent of 1994?

A couple of popular online retail sites are adding bridal components to their offerings, increasing the options for less traditional brides and for bridesmaids who don’t feel like dumping a fortune on a dress she’ll never wear again.

Rent the Runway launched their bridesmaid dress component Tuesday. Now Brides-to-be can select a style from the site and her maids can merely rent and return the dresses after the big day is done. Designers such as Nicole Miller and Robert Rodriguez have designed dresses exclusively for Rent the Runway. And some non-exclusive styles will also be available from Shoshanna and Calypso St. Barth’s. Accessories fit for a wedding are available from designers such as Miriam Haskell and Badgley Mischka. Wedding accessory rentals start at $10.

Shopbop, the go-to site for contemporary and some edgier designer wares, will also be adding bridal to the website starting in March. [Updated 1:25 p.m. Wednesday: An earlier version of this article said the bridal component to the website would be added in February.] The bridal gowns on shopbop’s Bridal Boutique will include pieces from smaller, lesser known New York designers as well as more established brands such as Halston Heritage, Thread Social, Rachel Pally, Lela Rose, Notte by Marchesa, Temperley London and Calvin Klein.

Your Stylist: Slipping into a long skirt this spring

January 17, 2011 |  8:01 am

Image stylist and market editor Melissa Magsaysay soothes your sartorial woes in the weekly Your Stylist post.

Longskirts

3 Unless you’re following the Gwyneth Paltrow dressing plan of "the more leg the better,"  spring’s big trend in long, almost-floor-grazing skirts might just appeal to you.

True, it’s yet another trend that could drown those of us under 5-feet-5,  and so far every long skirt I’ve Look 1 seen worn has been on a runway model (Michael Kors did the long, lithe casual version, while at Jil Sander it was more crisp and polished) on whom the skirt drapes and pools so elegantly and perfectly I want to cry. But by taking into consideration your proportions and pairing the skirt with the right top and shoes, you can certainly carry it off without looking like you were attacked and rolled up in a bolt of discount fabric.

I love the everyday casual look of wearing one of these skirts with a white T-shirt or white men’s button down, tucked in, maybe 60Topshop with the sleeves slightly scrunched up. Ballet flats, simple flat sandals or even a pair of Converse Chuck Taylors looks adorable peeking out from the hem. If you don’t want to tuck in your shirt, then leave it loose and hanging out, but think about winding a thin leather belt around your midsection to define the waist and create some shape, especially if you’re on the shorter side.

If you’re going for a dressier look and want to wear heels, make sure 6a00d8341c630a53ef0148c7287011970c the skirt isn’t long to the floor, but rather more of a tea length (in the front) at least, like the beautiful smoky gray version from Club Monaco. The way long skirts were presented at the Jil Sander spring 2011 show is also a perfect example of how to take the look into nighttime. The skirts here were more structured and came in a palette of happy, vivid colors. A crisp white T-shirt tucked in and the right statement accessories make for a modern, chic and unexpected evening look.

On the other end of the spectrum, long skirts can certainly bring out your inner grunge girl, by pairing a neutral-colored skirt in a gray or black with flat lace-up boots, a slouchy shirt and a draped tissue-thin scarf.

The length of these skirts may seem a bit daunting to try and wear, but because the colors, fabrics and silhouette are so simple and elegant, think of pairing more casual and minimal pieces with them, so you’re not engulfed in fabric. And hey, long may be a new concept for us for spring (especially in L.A, save for the cotton jersey maxi dresses so many women love) but they sure beat booty shorts.

Golden Globe winner and mom-to-be Natalie Portman looked absolutely stunning in her beautifully draped Viktor & Rolf gown.

To play up the pink and red colors of her dress, the new face of Miss Dior Cherie went with a palette of ultra-feminine shades –- all by Dior, natch.

Makeup artist Sarai Fiszel created a look for Portman, inspired by her dust-pink strapless dress adorned with a hand-embroidered red silk rose.

On her skin, Fiszel used Dior Hydra Life Sorbet Crème and DiorSkin Forever Extreme Wear Makeup
in No. 020. Her cheeks were gently flushed with DiorBlush in Rosebud and her eyes swept with Dior 5-Colour Eye shadow in Soft Pink Design No. 018. Diorshow Lash  Maximizer and Diorshow Iconic Mascara in Black played up her lashes and Dior Waterproof Crayon Eyeliner in Trinidad further defined her eyes.

Golden Globes: Amy Adams' beautiful post-pregnancy glow

January 16, 2011 |  8:37 pm

Amy Adams
Golden Globes nominee Amy Adams’ hair and makeup looked just right against her jewel-toned, teal Marchesa gown.

To achieve this look, her makeup artist Molly Stern went with the “painterly feel” of her dress, starting with YSL Perfect Touch Radiant Brush foundation and Giorgio Armani sheet blush in #2.

Lancome’s Taupe Craze eye shadow (out in February) was swept across her eyelids for a natural finish, as was Le Stylo Waterproof eyeliner in Minuit.

To get her perfectly pink pout, Lancome’s Color Design Matte Lip Color in Stylista and Le A’bsolu Nu in Evening Lace (out in March) were applied to her lips.

The new mom looked positively radiant in her dress, which perfectly complimented her upswept ginger hair.

Golden Globes: Megan Fox -- more old-Hollywood hair

January 16, 2011 |  7:40 pm

Megan Fox was true to her bombshell status in an Armani Prive gown and soft old-Hollywood waves.

Hairstylist Andy Lecompte was inspired to create a look for her that was “classic Megan,” with a glamorous vibe to complement her stunning one-strap gown.

To achieve this look, Lecompte started by applying Phyto professional volume mousse before blow drying. He set her hair using a 3/4-inch barrel curling iron and then pin curls. Once he released the pin curls, Lecompte brushed out her hair using a Sheila Stotts detangling brush and gave the hair a deep side part.

He applied a dab of Oribe gel serum to his fingertips and tucked the hair behind her ear.

Golden Globes: January Jones’ ultra-glamorous old Hollywood hairdo

January 16, 2011 |  7:09 pm

JJ2
The only thing rivaling January Jones’ fire-red Versace dress would be her perfectly coiffed blond mane. Her hairstylist Renato Campora says he was inspired by the styles of the 1960s, which he believes are the most striking decade for beauty. He also aimed to channel classic, old Hollywood glamour with a modern twist, full of volume and timeless elegance.

Campora started on Jones’ wet hair and applied Frederic Fekkai Advanced Full Blown Styling Whip to create volume and Fekkai Coiff Contrôle Ironless Straightening Balm to smooth out the hair. He parted the hair to the side and blow-dried using a round brush. To create waves, he put hair in hot rollers and let them sit for 10 minutes. Once he took the rollers out, Campora brushed through the hair, creating volume and constructing shape for the style. To finish off her look, Renato sprayed Fekkai Coiff Sheer Hold Hairspray for an all-night hold.
