LOLcats Now Has Music Reviews, Part 3: Muse, Kings of Leon and Yeah Yeah Yeahs

October 9, 2009 |  6:13 pm

Sadly, our LOLcat music reviews have come to an end.

Don't cry! Kristyn Pomranz and Katherine Steinberg, the brains behind "I Can Has Cheezburger: The MusicLOL!," an off-Broadway production based on the popular blog about silly kitties with misspelled captions, bring us their last set of critical cat pictures.

Rock 'n' roll LOLcats give us their opinions on Muse, Kings of Leon and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

We can haz musik revyooz.

Muse

These English rockers put on a heckuva live show. And we tend to agree with the cats about their new album, "The Resistance."

What we said: "That arty intransigence often improves the band's music, as in "United States of Eurasia," which proceeds from a pretty piano-ballad intro to an Arabian-accented orchestral-rock climax. Occasionally, though, it can make Bellamy and his bandmates sound like the world's most successful sourpusses."

LOLcats Now Haz Music Reviews, Part 2: Beyonce, Jay-Z and Black Eyed Peas

October 8, 2009 |  1:06 pm

The LOLcats have some pretty polarized views on pop music, as you can see by the LOLcat music reviews we posted Wednesday.

The cats are back today, once again pairing some cute pictures and choice words for three of the biggest acts in hip-hop and R&B.;

Kristyn Pomranz and Katherine Steinberg, who penned "I Can Has Cheezburger: The MusicLOL!," an off-Broadway production based on the popular blog about silly kitties with misspelled captions, constructed these pictures as a Pop & Hiss exclusive.

This time, we get to learn what your pets think of Beyoncé, hubby Jay-Z and R&B-dance-sensation; Black Eyed Peas.

We can has musik revyooz.

Beyoncé

Beyonce_lolcat_

She's a chart-topper, spotlight-owner and Hamburger Helper maker. Her third studio album, "I Am... Sasha Fierce," spurred a number of massive hits, including "Single Ladies" and "If I Were a Boy." Of the album's concept, Ann Powers wrote, "Beyoncé meant to represent herself as a split personality, tender and open on the one hand, indomitable and rather scary on the other."

Here's what we said about her summer performance at the Honda Center: "There’s no incongruity in a superstar – even one who preaches sisterhood – commanding center stage. And in Beyoncé’s form of womanism, everyone is advanced when one woman hits her personal best."

The cats like her too.

LOLcats Now Haz Music Reviews, Part 1: Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus and Asher Roth

October 7, 2009 |  2:55 pm

Some of us here at Pop & Hiss have a theory that almost everything is better with cats. To see whether such a hypothesis extends to music criticism, we reached out to two clever women who were responsible for bringing the LOLcat phenomenon to the stage.

Kristyn Pomranz and Katherine Steinberg are the brains behind "I Can Has Cheezburger: The MusicLOL!," an off-Broadway production based on the popular blog about silly kitties with misspelled captions. The musical premiered at the New York Fringe Festival in August and may make its way to other areas of the country (paws crossed).

Ben Huh, the chief executive of Pet Holdings Inc., which is the parent company of the I Can Has Cheezburger blog, recommended the pair for our project. Despite being an expert in cat-speak, the Seattle-based Huh says he's not very knowledgeable about new music.

So while other music publications have already jumped on the phenom, Pop & Hiss went straight to the source, and asked Pomranz and Steinberg to bestow their musical criticisms onto goofy pictures of cats. In between work on their new musical -- "which is also about food but not about cats," Pomranz wrote in an e-mail -- the duo has let us know what your pets think about your music collection.

Lady-gaga(2) Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga is one of the hottest --- and most unusual -- acts around right now. She wrestled with Madonna on Saturday, and recently parted with Kanye "Imma-let-you-finish" West for her November tour.

Between all these forays into pop stardom and designing high-end headphones, does Gaga even have time to make good music? The cat thinks so.
